As a special treat to ourselves my wife and I stayed for three nights between Xmas and New Year at the Moevenpick hotel in Bangalore. The hotel is conveniently located between the airport and the city, so it is quicker to reach there than most other hotels in Bangalore. Being the newest 5-star hotel in the city the Moevenpick offers highly competitive rates and hotel facilities that are in tip top condition. Architecturally the building is impressive, the standard 'superior' rooms are spacious and very well equipped, and the newly recruited staff are all extremely well trained and eager to please. The 'My Place' restaurant is particularly impressive. Since the Moevenpick is the only European-owned hotel in Bangalore (and one of the few in India) the food on offer has a uniquely and completely authentically European flavour. Of course there are all the usual Indian dishes available as well, but where else could you find Bircher Muesli for breakfast? The buffet meals are notably good value (starting at just Rs 750 for the buffet lunch) and every buffet meal includes a good few European treats - ranging from Saltimbocca to fresh pasta and exotic European cheeses and desserts. Finally, the rooftop gym has the very latest equipment - which we made good use of. My only cavil is that it would have been nice if the restaurant offered more affordable Indian wines by the glass, as the wines from European that are available will cost as much as your meal for just 180 ml. As usual the hotel also charges a stiff price for mineral water. This is a common but distasteful practice in India, where bottled water is a necessity not a luxury, but can cost as much as $3 per litre. At meal times we really think it should be given away free or at at least a cheaper brand should be made available.
We also found the otherwise beautiful hotel Spa to be over-priced: their fees for a massage were similar if not more than you would pay in Europe (once all the taxes are added). For 1.5 hours in the spa you can find yourself paying almost as much as the cost of your room. However the staff have only experience and no formal training in different massage techniques (a common enough problem in India). For this reason they should not be charging premium rates.
