A drive to Punmudi from Trivandrum was fun. On the way we sat in the cool waters of Kallar a forest stream which becomes a river down stream. At Ponmudi it was fun and lots of photo opportunities as it the highest peak in the neighborhood.
Caution drive has 22 hairpin turns. So be careful and don't over-speed. Cary food in bags (not plastic). The ITDC restaurant there in at the start of the climb had little choice of food, pricey and not of the quality we liked to have. (strictly no alcoholic beverages) Driving from the city takes an hour and it is nice to have day trip there. Lots of walking possible in cool weather. Avoid rainy days. Entry fee is nominal.

Ponmudi is a hill station near Trivandrum. 65 KMs away from Trivandrum city.
Public transport system. Only bus service available. Takes nearly 3 hours. Only 3 or 4 service daily from Trivandrum. Buses are over crowded. Only ondinary buses. But KTDC runs good buses, but at higher prices on tour basis. Very calm and quiet place. Very less population. Around 1000. No good restorants or shops. KTDC runs a restorant with limited menu. Not costly. Beer parlour available. Over night stay not advisable for couples though there is a police aid post there. Night there is no activity. But as a group you can enjoy the calmness of night. More and more govt institutions are coming up. Better hire a taxi from trivandrum in the early morning say 4 am and reach at 6 am. Leave in the late evening say 9 pm. Purchase all essencital items particularly medicines from Trivandrum itself.

Stayed for a weekend at Ponmudi's tea estate, which was built by the British. Truly a remarkable view as well as the best place one can escape from Trivandrum's scorching heat in August. The estate had a beautiful garden full of different fruits, purple mangosteen, juicy jack fruit, fragrant guava etc. Love to go back any time...

Ponmudy is situated 62 kms away from Trivandrum with an altitude of 1100 m above the sea level. We, a group of four started journey from Trivandrum, Even though the road to Ponmudi is not wide, it haven't spoiled the essence of our journey. The path consists of 22 sharp hairpin bends which had added additional flavour to our trip. The driving experiance was great . On covering each hairpin bends the change in climate can be cleanly identified. Moreover Ponmudi is a part of Western Ghats. The name PONMUDY refers to GOLDEN VALLEY. On the pathways, many monkeys can be seen. Then comes tea plantations, it feels like green carpet placed through the mountains. While watching the mountains suddently mist (within seconds) will covers us and feels surroundings like a while galaxy, in addition to that, when we close our eyes we can enjoy pindrop of silence. On the top side of Ponmudi (where the road completly ends) on that day the temperature was extremely chilling me and was about 19 degree cel ( at mid noon about 1.30 PM) . Ponmudi is gifted with scenic splendor and natural beauty. Winter season starts here from the month of November to February. Temperatures drop substantially and they range from a minimum of 15°C and go up to a maximum of 24°C. December is the coldest part of the year and the travelers who visit the place during this time should bring appropriate winter clothing. Anyway this place is very apt for friends, family. Other attractions are Meenmutty waterfalls, Kallar etc. Anyway I liked this place very much. Otherthing is that only very limited number of rooms are available there, if anyone interested for a stay program they must book and confirm there rooms before there trip. It is ideal for one day trip.
