“Clean and Convenient”
Reviewed 21 November 2011

I stayed at the Gama Heritage as a start to the Gap "Beaches & Backwaters" tour. I arrived a day early and found the hotel to be very convenient. A short walk from the beach, I felt very safe a solo female. Ate dinner at Oceanos, just around the corner and I highly recommend both the food and the service. Gama was very basic, but what do you expect from that type of lodging? My only real complaint was the thin, hard mattress I had, but that seemed to be standard in South India.

Gama Heritage Residency, at Fort Kochi was our first stop on our tour of Kerala. Its stark white facade ,arched windows and red tiled roofing made it appear more like a chapel and it did not come as a surprise to know that it belonged to the church.Nothing glamorous but very beckoning. The staff ,though not in uniform, presented a very pleasing picture and their courtesy and graciousness was extended with a welcome drink which put as at complete ease. The deluxe room allotted to us was unusually very spacious and homely. The clean beds, with a wardrobe,t.v.,an extra bed,two single seaters and a coffee table were quite adequate.Only thing lacking was a rack to keep the suitcases. The décor was very simple and the room with its adjoining bathroom with a large powder room can be termed only functional. The bathroom could do with a shower stall. The package included only breakfast and the kitchen staff went out of the way to serve us tasty breakfast to suit our palate.Being ideally located near the beach,it was not difficult finding places to eat lunch and dinner. On the whole,we came away with good memories of our stay at Fort Kochi and the Hotel surely contributed to that!!!!!

We stayed here as part of a Beaches and Backwaters tour with gap adventures, and it was one of my favourite hotels on the trip.

Compared to other 'basic' accommodation we stayed the Gama Heritage was wonderfully clean! Although the rooms are basic, the large basic bathroom was perfect, the beds were comfortable and clean.

The staff were lovely, very keen to help. And the little puppy Wilf, who lived in the security house at the entrance was a delight each morning, wagging his tail wanting to say hello.

It is a great location only a few minutes walk to the fishing nets at Fort Kocki. It's a wonderful area, with so many fantastic restaurants nearby.

While slightly tricky to find (tell your driver it's behind the Bishop's house), this hotel is charming and very comfortable. The rooms had excellent A/C and very clean bathrooms, though the hot water was not consistent or reliable. The restaurant provided adequate breakfasts, with the all-too-familiar theme of only serving some of the things on the menu (we found this quite common in Indian restaurants). The staff was helpful but not overbearing and there was a convenient internet terminal in the lobby.

my husband and i just got back from a 4 night business trip during which we stayed at Gama Residency. We were'nt very encouraged with the 3 reviews we read, but having booked last minute, we had no choice. We had a bit of a challenge in finding the place, but that's purely because the driver wasnt a local, and we had to ask around. It is behind the Bishop's house, which is a well known landmark in fort Kochi.

rooms: We stayed on the first floor in a very clean and comfortable room, with a large basic but clean bathroom and an annexe like thing which had the wash basin and mirror. It was a basic room with nothing to write home about....like any other regular tourist frequented hotel room in india. The plus point is that it is a relatively new hotel and therefore well maintained. I must mention the absolutely clean towels. the staff is very accommodating and immediately responded to our request for extra pillows and blanket. the beds were made everyday without asking and fresh towels and toiletries set provided. we tried the laundry service as well and it was very prompt.

food: the only disappointment is the quality of room service. We had breakfast in the room every morning (it was complimentary) and dinner on two nights. The service is painfully slow and it takes a minimum of 30 mins for even a cup of coffee. if you are ordering multiple items, they will all come at different times, and most often, you eat lukewarm food because of all the waiting. The food is average. standard continental fare for breakfast with masala omelet on all four days was decent, the kerala appam and egg roast (curry) was disappointing. for dinner we had parotas (made of all purpose flour) with vegetable stew one night, which was terrible, the steamed rice with egg roast was good. my husband ordered for a chicken curry which was quite bad. the kerala fish fry was good as was the buttermilk curry. As much as i tried, i couldnt get a decent cup of tea or coffee... the staff just wouldnt get what i was saying, and i ended up with very milky and very weak tea and coffee on all days

service: the staff is very helpful but they are painfully slow. their earnestness kind of makes up for the sloppiness. if you are on a business trip, this can be quite annoying

location: excellent. It is walking distance from the main touristy spots, the parade grounds, the bus stand, numerous (and wonderful) cafes and shopping areas. This is the touristy part of fort kochi. the quaint streets you walk in with the brightly painted and beautiful houses are delightful.

accessibility: if you need to travel into cochin city, this isnt the place for you. a cab / auto rickshaw will take you about 30 mins to get you into the main city. If you want to sight see and just walk around fort kochi, this is a great location.

i'd say this place is good if you want a basic hotel with no frills and will dine out most of the time. Continental breakfast is a safe bet. i wouldn't miss anything if i dont stay here again!!

Gama Heritage is in a good location, nice rooms and bathroom with air con and tv. However the breakfast is not included and is only average. The showers have cold water which was a big disappointment because from the look of the hotel and bathroom you expect hot water. Its overpriced and would not stay here again.

We stayed here for 1 night only, at the end of November 2008. We had difficulty finding the hotel in the dark, but for those hardy travellers who seek it, the effort will be worth it. For the record, it is behind the Bishop's House and vehicle access is alongside the dental facility !!

Gama Heritage is a clean, well presented hotel, with comfortable rooms and a good variety of food available. We arrived after the scheduled meal times, but the duty staff were exceptionally accommodating when it came to providing us with food. They willingly reopened the dining room, and made the food we requested without question or complaint - and very good it was too.

The bedroom was well appointed, air-conditioned, light and airy, and with a good en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Comfortable huge bed made for a good night's sleep and an excellent breakfast completed a very enjoyable stay. Well done Gama Heritage and thank you.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable and very helpful staff
  • Disliked — Difficult to find, especially in the dark !!

The last of the heritage trilogy is the Gama Heritage. The name itself is synonymous with its Portuguese connection that is related to Vasco De Gama. The resort takes us to a bygone era, which witnessed a huge change in the historical as well as the cultural scenario of Kerala. The architecture of Kerala also saw a significant transformation with the foreign connections coming in. This is evident from the structural designs of Bishops house of Kochi Diocese and the Indo-Portuguese museum as well and its located inside the bishop house, Fort Cochin. The location is very quiet and calm atmosphere and walkable distance to the beach (2 min), Chinese fishing net(4min). Friendly people, homely atmosphere, 24-hr service with better facilities. ... more   less
