“A fabulous place to stay”
Reviewed 1 May 2013

We stayed at Le Colonial as the final stop on our 16 night tour of Southern India and unanimously decided that it was our favourite hotel of the trip. The decor reflected the bungalow's history yet offered 5 star comfort. The sevice was exemplary, nothing was too much trouble and we were served the best food of our stay in India. I would certainly recommend this boutique hotel to anyone visiting Kochi.

Room Tip: All the rooms have their own charm but the larger rooms like 'Viceroy' are amazing!

Le Colonial is a charming property, enhanced by tasteful and appropriate interior designing and decor, keeping the original Portugese flavor intact while giving all the comforts of 5 star living. No ugly AC ducts here! The service is exemplary - personalized like a home stay, yet distant enough to make you feel comfortably independent. Food was fantastic, especially the Kerala 'home' cuisine as requested by us. Smita and the team - take a bow!

A small, historic, boutique hotel well located in Cochin. The service is very personal and the staff willing to accommodate all requests. When we asked about the hours for dinner we were told it could be served any time we showed up! We had a very early morning flight that required us to leave the hotel at 5 AM. They had a light breakfast available for us before we departed. We stayed in the Jan Van Spall room and our daughter and her husband were in the Major Petrie. Both rooms were huge, well furnished, and very comfortable. The only negative about the hotel is that dining is outside on the patio. At least when we were there, in late February, the mosquitoes were a problem. Despite the candles they use to keep away the bugs several of us got a number of bites. Other than that, a wonderful stay.

Le Colonial was a truly hidden gem. A 500 year old bungalow, that Vasco da Gama once lived in, shaded from the Kochi sun and noise, yet walking distance from everything that matters. Charming artefacts on display, that feeling of awe that you're standing neck deep in history, yet coming home to modern luxuries like air conditioning and sleeping on a plush mattress every night. Le Colonial was a fabulous find, and we're so glad we met Smitha the manager, she was so much fun to sit and chat with, we didn't realise where the time went. The food was fabulous, like an upmarket yet home-made meal Kerala style. The perfect place to laze and do some reading or writing on a hot summer's day. Everyone was thoughtful, polite and interesting.

Le Colonial is an exquisite 14th century mansion restored lovingly back to its originial grandeur. It has a lovely little courtyard garden complete with a pool and big old trees which give it a feel of an era gone by. The rooms are stately and well furnished. Most of them had a little private verandah. Ours (the Jan Van spall room) overlooked the pool and was a really lovely place to wind down, have a drink and listen to the birds. The staff also very kindly arranged a massage in the private verandah at 20 minutes notice ( absolutely fantastic of them, given i only had the time window when my 1 year old son was sleeping). Bliss!

What I really loved about Le Colonial was their willingness to own up to a problem and LISTEN to a guest. Our breakfast was delayed by 45 mins on the first day because of their cook being rather tardy. We were travelling with a toddler, and only one of us could eat at a time while we looked after him. So the delay was really time consuming and frustrating. To our surprise, the manager Smita promptly called us, apologized and assured us it would not happen again. The staff too, went the extra mile to make it up and were super prompt on every request thereafter. They pulled out all the stops. It's rare to see this kind of humility in hotel chains these days and therefore, very refreshing and welcome! Kudos to the staff for having totally bowled us over.

Food was amazing! The seafood especially was extremely fresh and tastefully prepared. They even prepared special low spice baby food for my son exactly as per my requests , which was very considerate. The indian breakfast ( idlis and dosas) too were authentic and tasty

Negatives- There are LOADS of mosquitoes so a repellant and keeping doors closed in the evenings is a MUST. Also, the nicer rooms are rather fully priced.

Unfortunately there is an increase in the insects due to humidity in the season, despite regular pest control. We are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused and the team has been trying various solutions to remedy the problem.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is probably Asia's oldest colonial house, dating back to 1506. Located in the very heart of Fort Cochin, right next to Saint Francis Church, this legendary house is said to have housed the Saint as also Vasco de Gama. After 150 years as the Portuguese Governor's residence, it was one of the very few houses not to have been destroyed when the Dutch took Fort Cochin. It then housed the Dutch Governors for a century and a half, until Jan van Spall sold it to the British in 1795. In turn, they passed it on to the J. Thomas, the renowned tea trader. These five captive centuries of history have been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a "Club" and meeting point for the discerning travelers. ... more   less
