“The place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2014

Stayed here recently at the start of our Kerelan tour and it was delighful. As soon as we walked in we felt at home, everyone was so friendly and genuinely warm. The room was very large as was the bathroom which had the biggest shower I've ever seen, all decorated in colonial style.Lovely garden, a welcoming oasis after sightseeing.Completely understand why they call it a non hotel,it feels like home.We only had breakfast and some snacks which were good and after reading other reviews, wish we'd eaten there. The staff were lovely,on the morning of my Birthday they had laid the table with flowers and presented me with a cake,we were leaving that morning.I was very sad to leave and would like to revisit in the future. There are several good looking hotels in Fort Cochi but I could never imagine staying anywhere else and would highly recommend it.

We have travelled enough in India to realise that there are several foreign owned hotels charging extreme prices but not delivering on basics whereas the cheaper hotels are maintaining clean rooms with good wifi. The other issue is you can clearly have different experiences depending on the room you are given and the service. We moved rooms due to a cleanliness issue and perhaps I always make the mistake of being partial to heritage properties but find they are the most difficult to maintain. The feel is that of a homestay which would be fine if they charged homestay prices. Even still, linen should be fresh, crisp and clean and you should always feel like you are the first to stay somewhere. I agree that the food was ok but I am often a little suspicious of an empty hotels when others are at full house. Focus needs to be on hygiene and service and protecting patrons from swarms of mosquitoes (other hotels manage it). the website is beautiful and therefore a little deceiving.

We stayed here for three nights on our arrival in Kochin and couldn't have wished for a better place to stay. The rooms were large and comfortable and furnished in a colonial style, not surprisingly; we also had a verandah overlooking the garden. The staff were courteous and extremely helpful, the food delicious, and as other reviewers have mentioned a lot of things to see and do are a short walk away. We were given good advice from the manager about other places to eat in the evening should you wish but from our experience you would do better to stay in the hotel and enjoy their catering. A very relaxing place to stay.

I travel a lot for work and for fun...so I get to visit a lot of properties. Le Colonial is simply fantastic. Some properties are great...some offer wonderful experiences...Le Colonial affords both. I've never felt quite 'at home' as we did here. We asked for a cooking lesson and spent two hours learning with their kitchen crew. If you're coming to Ft. Cochin, stay here.

This place was truly a home away from home!!

We (my wife and I) have never felt so comfortable in a hotel as we did here. They classify it as a non-hotel and we now understand why. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel, then this is probably not the place for you but if you are looking to be completely relaxed, comfortable and feel like you are at home, then we would definitely recommend this place.

Smita, Vipin, Sumesh, Chef and the rest of the team were amazing (an understatement)!! They really made us feel completely at home and nothing was impossible. They catered to our every need. We felt sad when we had to leave!!

Strongly recommend Le Colonial!!

An absolute gem of a place. Historical and beautiful, with spacious rooms and perfect decor. Rooms open up to gracious large verandahs. The grounds are minimal, but there is a lovely pool, which is great as it was very hot.
We cannot say enough about the staff. Super friendly, and lovely with the children. The food was superb and service perfect.
This is a lovely place to stay, and I highly recommend it for all travellers.

Room Tip: As it is a small exclusive boutique hotel all rooms are lovely.

We stayed at the hotel after our other plans fell through and we were so lucky to arrive at such a lovely place, great food but above all, such friendly staff. The GM and her staff headed by the efficient Vipin, were great to be around. We were looked after in every way and they all really understood how to make their guests feel at home. The day after we left a tree fell down in their garden which we saw on our return to the city. I hope that they have managed to get back on track for the busy Christmas season. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is probably Asia's oldest colonial house, dating back to 1506. Located in the very heart of Fort Cochin, right next to Saint Francis Church, it is said to have housed the Saint and Vasco de Gama. After 150 years as the Portuguese Governor's residence, it was one of the very few houses not to have been destroyed when the Dutch took Fort Cochin. It then housed the Dutch Governors for a century and a half until Jan van Spall sold it to the British in 1795. In turn, they passed it on the J. Thomas, the legendary tea trader. These five captive centuries of history have been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a "Club" for the discerning travelers. ... more   less
