We arrived in Cherai Beach after dark and walked up and down with our backpacks searching for a room. We tried the lower end homestays which were ok but we were looking for something a bit special. We then went to the Cherai Beach Resort which was fine but very overpriced and with rude staff. Finally we walked past a pretty little house set back from the road in a beautifully kept garden full of flowers and realised that it was a homestay. We went in to look at the rooms and immediately fell in love with the place. The room was very nicely decorated, the bathroom was clean and spacious and there was a kitchenette including a fridge, hob and lots of plates, glasses etc which was very useful. The room was IR 1500 a night, including a/c, tv and a fan which compared favourably with the room tariffs in surrounding accommodation.
But the best thing about this place is Anu, the guy who looked after us while we were there. He speaks excellent English and was happy to sit and chat with us and help us with anything at all that we needed. He is also an Ayervedic therapist so massages are available!
On our last day when we needed a tuk-tuk to take us to the airport at 6am he arranged this for us and the tuk-tuk was a very special one: a fully pimped-out vehicle complete with flashing religious icons and music that played when it reversed!
Our whole experience was totally awesome at this place. If you want to see the real Kerala rather than sit in a boring sterile hotel room then this place is perfect.
