“Dum in cochin.”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

Been to cochin on 2nd week of April 2014. Kaikka's biryani was first on my list. We went to the new joint in Ernakulam, and not the old one at Mattancherry. The mutton biryani was very good. The rice was vey much hydrabadi, but flavours are mild and light not at all spicy like the hydrabadi version. This one felt like a fusion of Hydrabadi and Kerala biryani. The biryani was simple, not so rich and you dont feel heavy after having one. Somehow it felt home cooked and i guess thatz what kayees is all about, not sure about the other dishes though.

Reviewed 24 February 2014 via mobile

Its actually in kayees hotel where kaikka's biryani avaiable ..the gps location on TripAdvisor is wrong..go in BTH Roundabout direction before reaching petrol pump you would see kayees hotel..The chicken dum biryani is so good, especially the biryani rice.As of feb 2014 they charge Rs135 but its worth the price they are asking. The staffs are really friendly and the restaurant looks neat..I would recommend to all those looking for a tasty biryani....

“A GOOD Non- Veg. RESTAURANT IN KOCHI”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

Kaikkas has been a famous joint for good non-veg food, during the past many years. Apart from their restaurant at Mattancherry, (around 3- 4 KM East to Fortchin) they have another one at Ernakulam (off MG Road, near TDM Hall). All the foods served are fresh and tasty. Kaikkas Biriyanis are famous. Whether it is mutton or chicken, it is a fusion of Mughalai / Hyderabadi / Malabari and I should say, a typical authentic Cochin freshly dummed Biriyani. I have been enjoying their food, may be during the past two three decades and I can strongly recommend the restaurant to any non- veg lovers. Please do not expect a posh ambiance or excellent service. But, the quality of food is excellent. Pricing is also very reasonable. Lunch time is very busy and need to wait to get an entry.

“Delicious - it has Kerala written all over it”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

I changed my day's itinerary to ensure I sampled this one - apparently it is only served between 12 and 2 pm and most days it finishes before 2. In Kochi, biryani is synonymous with Kayees & no surprises why. The staff who were interacting with other guests in the restaurant became quiet when we entered - they probably aren't used to seeing a lot of tourists. It took the manager to point us to the seats we could occupy - no offense taken :)

The biryani is simply tasty. Not at all spicy, and has a lot of elements that you wouldn't generally associate Biryani with - dry fruits, mango, pineapple to name a few (having said that we had biryani at other local joints & they seemd to have the same characteristics as well - so it is probably the kerala style of preparation that mughlai biryanis don't employ). The chicken biryani isn't as good as the mutton & beef ones - avoid it.

Can't complete the review without mentioning the date chutney - it was sweet yet tangy, and though I never ever eat chutney, I asked for more of this one - lip-smacking.

The place is nondescript, service is quick, and the staff keep checking to see if you need more salad or chutney. Quantity is filling and inspite of being light eaters could finish one dish each - which speaks of the taste.

“Unique Biriyani”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

The famous chef who started Kaikas became a household name as they started as caterers for Kerala Weddings with their signature dish being Biriyani. The restaurant is fairly swish and mainly caters its famous mouth watering biriyani. Biriyani is normally associated with North Indian Cuisine and therefore this biriyani is unique in its totally different flavor. Apart from this the place also serves a plethora of non vegetarian dishes from lamb to chicken and also seafood. A must visit particularly form guests coming from outside Kerala.
