Taj Malabar Resort & Spa Cochin
Ranked #8 of 227 Hotels in Kochi (Cochin)
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 December 2011

From the welcoming reception to the complimentary lunch and gifts when we left, this hotel really lived up to the Taj Vivante promise of "delightful surprises.". The location is excellent with a view across the water to Fort Kochi and the "infinity" pool takes advantage of this. A regular ferry service to the town, just a few minutes walk from the hotel, makes sightseeing very convenient.
The attractive colonial style furnishings are of the highest standard and rooms are spacious and well equipped. We were actually offered a choice but both were good. One of the aspects that set this hotel apart is the optional programme of events for guests. We took advantage of the complimentary "high tea" and the sunset cruise in the late afternoon. With three themed restaurants to choose from, there was no need to look elsewhere. Levels of service were excellent. Whilst there I also booked in for a spa treatment, which was a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable experience. The hotel's programme of excursions is well worth investigating, especially the backwater canoe trip.

Room Tip: Corner rooms have two large windows and offer spectacular views

We only stayed one night, we were on our way to a trip on a rice boat.
It was a very pleasant hotel, helpful staff, nice choice of food. They even presented us with a gift on our departure.

The Vivanta by Taj on Willingdon island was one of several Taj hotels I stayed in whilst touring India and, like the others, offered a high standard of accommodation and service. It was a lovely place to relax and to return to after the heat and humidity of Kochi town. Upon arriving at the hotel, one is greeted by staff in traditional costume (the women, at least), seated and provided with a delicious welcome drink: check in was efficient and handled perfectly. The hotel is based around a historic building of the 1930s but most of the rooms are in a seven storey addition. My initial disappointment at being shown into the modern part of the hotel was soon forgotten as the corner room, although not overly large, was very nice and had excellent views from the two windows across the water to Kochi town. The hotel is very nicely decorated and has a choice of restaurants and outdoor dining. I enjoyed a good lunch and the breakfast was also good with a wide range of both Indian and international foods. An enjoyable free boat ride round the bay is offered to guests each evening at 17h30 preceded by snacks and drinks. The hotel has an infinity pool and a spa centre, although I did not use any of the spa facilities. Laundry service was good and efficient, laundry being returned in a smart box with items wrapped individually. All staff were extremely helpful and courteous and a credit to whoever trained them. Kochi airport is some 70 minutes drive from Kochi town so I used the hotel's airport transfer service which worked perfectly in both directions. Views around the hotel are an eclectic mix of palm trees, Chinese fishing nets, small boats and large ships moored at the nearby wharf but this just adds to the interest of the setting. Access to Kochi or Jew Town is a few minutes by boat across the water.

Room Tip: If reserving a room in the modern seven storey part of the hotel, I think the best views would be fr...

From the moment you arrive it is clear you are in a special place. Efficient staff who deal with requests with a smile. Rooms very well equipped, clean and very comfortable. Food in all restaurants were excellent - try the Rice Boat for a treat and leave the choices to the staff - you will not be disappointed. The pool and garden enables you to watch the world float by (especially with a Kingfisher in hand). Many thanks

Dear Sir,

Greetings from the Southern Peninsula!!!

We are delighted that we had the opportunity to make your visit to Cochin special.

The "pollichathu" and "varuthathu" (authentic Kerala food preparation styles)on the Rice Boat restaurant menu are only tongue twisters to pronounce. We are pleased that our recommendations found favour with the gourmet in you.

On next visit,I welcome you to soak some sun on the niche beach by the infinity pool .

Regards
Vincent

I have stayed here a few times. The old wing is lovely; beautiful rooms, fantastic service. The restaurants are nice, and the hotel has a really lovely ambiance. Its great for a holiday or for a few days of luxury. The hotel has its own speed boat which can take you over to Fort Kochi. To get to Ernakulam, its quite a long drive, so if you are in Cochin on business, its probably not the most convenient place to stay

We stayed here for a 5 days in August 2011. The stay was excellent and the staff very friendly. The stay was PERFECT. To be honest, we are quite critical of the quality of hotels that we stay in but this holiday was just perfect. The differentiating factor between Taj and other hotels is the quality of staff. In my case, my wife was pregnant and she wanted to get a massage - which was declined by the spa. However, they went t the extent of doing research and came back with an offer of geting a facial done with ordinary fruit and vegetables. My wife loved it.
Also commendable is the motorboat trip from the hotel to the main city - its a 10 min ride [chargeable] but excellent and cuts the cab travel by about an hour - we used it every day.
Would certainly recommend this hotel for the discerning traveller.

Wonderful hotel, with a very warm and helpful staff. Really relaxing and far away from the madness of Kochi. Nice grounds and services.

Rooms are a bit small.
