“An outstanding hotel in a great location”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

A place where, from the moment you arrive at the entrance, provides a felling of quality. Staff are extremely well versed in guest hospitality and do their utmost to ensure you are satisfied. Rooms are spacious and modern but in the character of the British era. Food for breakfast is table service and offers good choice. Evening dinner offering in their History restaurant superb. There is a little bit of harbour boat traffic noise as many types of vessels pass but never annoying and ear plugs are provided. Make sure you take advantage of the complimentary sunset boat cruise. Extremely comfortable beds and expansive ensuite facilities. Could not fault.

We arrived mid morning to a warm welcome in the delightful reception area. Our room was ready and was comfortable with a view of the river. Our only criticism was that the dense netting around the balcony meant that we did not feel inclined to sit on the balcony.
The hotel is situated in the hustle and bustle of the ferry port area so there is always a lot of noise but this did not bother us.
Had a really good meal in the roof top fish restaurant, a little expensive compared to other places but worth it. Breakfast on the terrace was good with excellent staff who were able to recommend local dishes.
This is definitely a hotel worth visiting.

Dear Nigel and Judy

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Brunton Boatyard. I am happy that you have enjoyed the experience. The location of the hotel is such that, like you said it is in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the town and full of life. We will most certainly look into what we could do to avoid the birds and yet to have the balcony transformed into an inviting place to sit down and relax. I thank you again for being with us and hope to see you on your next visit.

The only problem with Brunton is -its very far away from the airport. Apart from that, it's a charming heritage hotel with wonderful service. It has beautiful views of the Arabian Sea. Don't miss the cooking session with the chef.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms have a view of the sea, so no special recommendations.

Dear Madam

Thank you for being with us. I am extremely happy that you have enjoyed the hotel and its services. We have a new road that has come up that will reduce the journey by some 20 minutes but then you will have to cross over in the ferry ( the ferry carries vehicles as well). We hope to see you on your next trip to Kochi.

Our 3rd or 4th visit to Kochi and if you're staying there it's difficult to imagine somewhere better. The rooms are great (ours looked out over the water), service is even better than usual for India, great breakfast and the restaurant is great for dinner too.

The location is in old Kochi Fort so very near the old Synagogue, the Dutch palace, good restaurants and the Chinese nets. Also near spice, pashmina and 'antique shops, so some excellent opportunities to over spend too.

There may be better places to stay in Kochi, but frankly it's not worth the risk - you should stay here.

Criticims? ... actually, can't think of any.

Room Tip: Make sure you're looking out over the water; there's so much going on.

We stayed here in March as part of our honeymoon. The hotel is fabulous, full of old world colonial charm and the staff are helpful and attentive, nothing is too much trouble. Our room looked out over the busy waterway and had a balcony to sit out on and watch the world drift by. The bathroom was large and had a separate bath and shower. Fresh fruit was delivered every day. There is a lovely swimming pool, all the food was good and we enjoyed a complimentary sunset boat trip around the local waterways. Our highlight was a birthday celebration meal organised by the hotel, originally planned for outside by the pool but rain forced us inside. Rather than just giving us a table in the restaurant, they provided a table for two in the afternoon tea lounge, surrounded by candles, with our own private waiter and two piece "band" playing traditional Indian Music discreetly in the background. A magical romantic evening which was rounded off with the chefs coming to present me with a birthday cake and to sing happy birthday. I also received a birthday card and a gift for the hotel and they decorated the bed with flowers one night as part of our honeymoon package. Our only regret was that we only stayed two nights. We thoroughly recommend this great hotel. We had no problem with postcards!

The hotel and Cochin are both lovely and I definitely recommend but we left several stamped items of mail with the hotel reception to post and not one arrived back in the UK. Bad luck you might say, but a previous reviewer who'd stayed a couple of weeks before us wrote that they'd left about 20 items with the hotel to post and not one arrived back. We'd been in India a month by the time we arrived in Cochin and posted lots of letters/postcards from various parts of the country all of which arrived at their destination safely.

Dear Guest

Thank you when you said that the hotel is lovely. With this second review about the missing postcards, I double checked the processes with regard to this with our shop. But still I find that the cards have been posted as usual and there is no scope for a scam. I still cannot figure out a reason why the cards have not reached.

I thank you for being with us and hope that that you will still prefer to be at Brunton in future.

Three of us stayed at Brunton's from 10-13th January 2014, on the recommendation of very old friends. The hotel was lovely; charming rooms, lovely setting, excellent room service, good food, good internet connection and we left with a very warm glow saying to each other that it would be our first stop next time we were in India. We had left some postcards (about 20) with the front desk staff to post, with cash for the stamps, but not a single one of them arrived. Indian post is notoriously slow, but cards we sent few days later from Alleppy, again having asked the hotel staff to mail them for us, all arrived at their destinations within 2 weeks. We have written twice to Bruntons to see if they could help (see copies below) but received no reply. We are extremely disappointed as this was a wonderful hotel, and feel we should share this scam with others.

'Dear Sir/Madam

I would appreciate a reply to my email below of 18 March. We are particularly irritated because many of the cards were stamped according to the price given to us by an official post office counter clerk, but your hotel told us that the postage was more expensive than that, so we paid again for a set of more expensive stamps.

Best wishes'

and

'Dear Brunton Boatyard

I stayed in your delightful hotel with two companions for 3 nights from 10-13 January and we much enjoyed being there.

Before our departure from Cochin, we all wanted to buy stamps from the hotel shop for our postcards – the shop had no stamps left so we paid the money for the postage and they promised to post our cards for us. But two months later, none of our cards have reached their destinations (there were a dozen or so), while cards posted a week later from Alleppey reached the UK within a fortnight. Perhaps the shop forgot to post our cards – could you check? And if they forgot, could they post them now?

With best wishes'

Room Tip: Service was very good apart from the disappointing scam from the front desk.

Dear Guest

I am glad that you enjoyed the experience while you were here. I am sad to know what happened since. I did check with the shop on the post cards and there were none pending to be posted. Nevertheless you should have received it, which is not the case. I do not know what has happened to your cards as it is not possible to track this at the post office.
I assure you this is no scam and to plan for one is least of our priorities and it is not worth it. I regret that this has happened.

I thank you for being with us and hope that you will still prefer to be at Brunton in future.
