“great start of our holiday in India”
Reviewed 22 February 2009

When we arrived we were warmly greeted.
We stayed in one of the suites in Brunton Boatyard - a great room with separate bedroom and pantry. The decoration is tasteful and elegant. The location is great - central and all the hustling and bustling of India is right on your doorstep. The staff are great, friendly and helpful. Both restaurants were terrific. Massage centre is very good as well - not overly posh but clean and adequate.
If you're tired of walking around Cochin, the swimmimg pool right at the waterfront is lovely and a great place to relax. The hotel also has a library and free bikes-very important for a Dutch tourist ;-)

Great views, good service, and Breakfast, rooms are well appointed and large.
View over busy waterway keeps you interested.
Staff are keen to help on anything, hotel asks not to give individual tips, good idea, they have “community box” on reception counter.
Near Chinese fishing nets and they do a free evening boat cruise

We loved this hotel. The location is stunning - every room has a view over the sea. The hotel although relatively new is beautifully fitted with antiques and looks old. There is a good choice of restaurants. One small criticism is that the seafood restaurant menu has a list of massive and quite expensive fish platters- very nice but much more than we wanted. However there are two other restaurants. The pool is perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Don't miss the free sunset cruise and cookery demo. Stayed two days and would have been happy to stay a week.

  • Liked — Everything- a unique hotel - lovely furniture, great views from room
  • Disliked — The sea food restaurant menu was unimaginative

Old colonial style mansion house in a fabulous poisition. The rooms are fantastic with lots of personality, huge cast iron baths, fantastic linens and terrific views. The pool area is private and peaceful. The staff are beautifully discreet and immensely helpful. Seafood restaurant is great. They have their own boat with evening cruises. Easy to walk out into the lively beach area of Kochi with the chinese fishing nets.

We came in the rainy season and were pretty much the only people in this fantastic hotel. The architecture and the materials used are a pure joy. And what an experience to wake up and see a big tanker fill the entire width of the room's view over the harbour. One of my all-time favourites.

Despite the address this Hotel is not on Willingdon island but right on the waterfront in the Old part of Cochin or Kochi as they now call it.
This is probably the best hotel in Cochin for a couple who want a romantic stop-off in the oldest 'European' City in India. It has bags of character and cannot be faulted on service and food.

The location is full of charm but being in the old City is at the heart of very busy part of town.

Next to the hotel is a ferry for people and vehicles which makes a lot of noise during the day (and at night during our stay as they repaired one of the ferries). But this is allpart of the charm of being at the bustling centre of the City's activities. Though it must be said after 10pm everything goes very quiet
.
The hotel design is modern traditional in style which trys to maintain the historic nature of the building. White walls dark tiled floors and heavy dark wood throuhout ensures it retains some of its historical past. Rooms are of an older design style focussing on wood and a classical plantation style using local product. This is a feature of the owners cgh earth group hotels who have, for a long time, allied themselves to the issues affecting the envronment. (When they say they want to save the panet you do believe them as opposed to the platitudes of other hotel groups)

The overriding feeling in the hotel is that of calm and space with less than 30 rooms the place is not crowded and the staff/guest ratio appears high. There is a sense of a bygone age but not overdone

Our overriding memories however were of the excellence of service and the quality of food in the 3 restaurants.

When we arrived we had a problem over the booking due entirely to the Indian Travel company. The receptionist and then the General manager Mr Gopakumar made every effort to make sure that the problems were rectified with the least worries for ourselves .

If you like Indian meals or seafood then this is the pace for you . Tthe food was exceptional and far better than a local more modern hotel that came highly recommended. But more importantly the staff seem to be encouraged to engage with the customers in a relaxed 'non-sales' manner which really adds to the totality of the eperience.

Regarding loaction you can only say its fantastic, on the shorefornt close to the Chinese Fishing nets and the old City plus the availability of a free evening cruise and spectacular views across to the more modern parts of Cochin its well worth a visit but no more than 4 days will suffice.

  • Liked — Balcony Views Comfortable Beds
  • Disliked — Noise in the early hours of the morning from Ferry terminal
