“Beautifully converted Victorian shipyard”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2010

During a trip to India last year we experienced several of CGH Earth's hotels. To give a bit of background, CGH Earth is a chain that specialises in eco-friendly boutique hotels and accomodation in South India. The Brunton Boatyard is the hotel they have in Kochi (Cochin).
The hotel itself is built on the site of an old Victorian shipyard in Fort Kochi and you can tell they have tried to keep the architecture and decoration true to the style of the era. The hotel is big but it wasn't very busy as we went during monsoon season. As we walked in we were immediately greeted with a drink and sat in the reception lounge while staff took care of our luggage and checked us in. The staff was generally very helpful, discreet yet available as you'd expect from a high class hotel.
Our room was lovely, with a little lobby, then the bedroom, bathroom and a little balcony that overlooked the swimming-pool and the bay of Kochi. Everything was nicely furnished and very clean. Electricity did seem a bit iffy (when trying to use the iron) but that's a common theme in India so we weren't worried. The air-con did work properly and was rather silent.
On the ground floor there is a swimming pool with sun loungers and the possibility to order drinks and food. There is also a private jetty from which day-trips around the bay and the backwaters are organised. Ayurvedic massages are also available (albeit quite expensive) but we didn't try these.
True to the heritage of the city, the hotel restaurant offers a delicious mix of Portugese, Syrian, South Indian and Dutch cuisines with great success and the staff is again very good.

The hotel is located by the Chinese fishing nets, with all other sights and cultural landmarks of Kochi very easily accessible - a visit of the area (and a good guide!) is a must in a town with such a rich and varied history!
The only downside is that Kochi is the 2nd biggest commercial harbour in India so the view from the balcony was not the best (unless you can mentally dismiss the cargo ships that come in and out in front of the hotel). The hotel is also by a jetty where boats ferry people from one side of the bay to the other so boat traffic is very heavy all day and most of the night. Saying that, we did not find it a bother, more of an eye-sore! I still managed to take nice pictures of birds and sunsets from the balcony!

In short, boutique hotels obviously don't come cheap, but if I could afford it, I would definitely want to stay in the Brunton Boatyard again!

Stunning hotel. We had an awesome room with a huge 4 poster that we literally had to climb up onto...Excellent bathroom as well with huge bath for both of us to lounge in whilst the HOT sea breeze blew in. Fabulous food and great location. Will definitely stay there again.
Average ayervedic spa.

This beautifully restored hotel has arisen on the remains of a 19th century shipyard. The hotel lovingly recreates a bygone era of seafaring adventurers with its giant anchor in the central courtyard. Large punkhas line an imposing vaulted entrance with sepia tinted photographs and maps bringing to mind Cochin's rich nautical heritage. The hotel, despite its size, has an intimate feel to it. The rooms, with their view of Cochin Harbour, are small and cosy with large four poster beds. Our room as well as bathroom had views of the harbour. A big plus at Brunton Boatyard is the gem-like swimming pool which has fantastic views of the ceaseless traffic on the water. The hotel is located in the heart of Fort Cochin, which makes it an ideal point to do some exploring--on foot or on bicycle--of nearby sights. In terms of food, it is perhaps best to stick to Indian (esp. Kerala cuisine), since the western fare tends to be rather lackluster.

situated at the water's edge just steps away from the chinese fishing nets, the location is perfect. The hotel is well furnished in traditional style and the rooms are comfortable.
Food was excellent with a mixture of indian and international dishes. The free wi-fi was a nice bonus. Not a hotel with bling but extremely pleasant.

We stayed 2 nights in a spacious Deluxe suite on the top floor. The sitting room of our suite had windows on 3 sides, giving panoramic views over the river/sea and passing ships and boats. Very close to the Chinese fishing nets and other attractions.

The elegant hotel building is quite grand, has a waterside pool and well kept gardens. Each of the 3 restaurants is excellent, the Terrace (serving incredibly fresh fish in the evening) being particularly good. The History serves excellent local food in the evening and the Armoury is a great place for breakfast and lunch (on the terrace overlooking the water is best). Breakfast is freshly prepared and served at one's table, unusually for India.

All the staff were exceptionally charming and helpful. We particularly liked the fact that the hotel has a box for tips to be shared among all the staff, rather than individual tipping. Despite this, service did not suffer one bit.

Our package included half board, a sunset cruise and a free cookery demo.

This was the best of the 3 CGH Earth hotels we stayed in, but the other 2 (Maison Perumal in Pondicherry and Visalam near Karaikudi) were also very good. We also travelled with them for 2 nights in a 1 bedroom rice barge on the Kerala backwaters, which is an experience not to be missed.

We would highly recommend a stay at the Brunton Boatyard.

If you want to go back in time and experience good food and charming people, then this is the place for you! We have stayed there before and cant fault it.We travelled with Kerala Connections , who were exemplary in every detail!! When doing my research , i was gob smacked! to read some very negative reviews about this excellent co. from xxox. As i said i have travelled with them before and have never had such comprehensive advice and faultless service. I thoroughly recommend this company.!!
