The hotel has a beautiful zen like feeling. Its design is a fabulous confluence of old-world dutch charms and modern-day luxuries. The rooms are huge (I've never been to more spacious hotel rooms) and mine had an attached balcony with a beautiful view. The bathrooms are super luxurious too and stocked with great natural products by CGH. The food is simply fabulous! Having been to most of the gourmet restaurants in mumbai and delhi, i can safely say that i haven't had better food anywhere. The distinct flavours of various dishes were impeccable. However, vegetarian options were limited and they need to add some variety there. Breakfast options were also limited and the service at that time needs to be more responsive. The hotel also provides bicycles and I went around cycling almost every morning to explore the area and totally loved it. The hotel has an awesome location in Fort Kochi and the entire area has a really nice vibe to it.

We stayed at the Eighth bastion recently and in all ways it exceed our expectations. The hotel is built just right for the discerning traveller with excellent rooms and spectacular bathrooms- we had 207 and 208 both rooms highly recommended. The pool is great, excellent restaurant, although service as is common in the Fort Kochi area (the venerable Brunton Boatyards owned by the same people as this hotel being a notable exception) was very slow at times. The free wifi worked great. They have complementary bikes for guests to cruise around. Top notch service.

The hotel staff was warm and helpful.
rooms are amazing- big and soooo comfortable bed. the shower looks like come out from a design magazine- I wish I had it at home...
Small hotel with tiny swimming pool. just to get wet...
GREAT restaurant, best in the area.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a balcony to the Courtyard and the pool

Really nicely designed "eco" hotel in a quieter area of Fort Kochi, while being still easily within walking distance of Princess Street, Kashi cafe, etc. There are tuk-tuk's waiting at the end of the road if you don't feel like the walk. You still get the motorbikes and honking of their horns, but hey, this is India, and you don't get the buses and trucks.
The beds are incredibly comfortable, with what amounts to a duvet underneath you as well as on top. We really got the best sleep here of any of the hotels we've stayed in in Fort Kochi. It's interesting people have said to avoid rooms 102/103 - this is where we were staying and the patios onto the pool were incredibly handy, and you could sit outside having a sundowner while watching the children inside. I was going to recommend these two rooms as the best in the hotel.
The bathrooms are great, with what I think they call "waterfall" (overhead) showers, and loads of hot water, which can be a rarity.
On the down side, the restaurant was a bit chaotic, they didn't seem to be quite geared up yet. The cold buffet part of breakfast was always running out of something: juice glasses, cereal bowls, juice, cold milk, something, which should have been easy to keep topped up. You'd order an omelette with toast, and get the omelette, then wait for the cutlery, then wait for the toast, by which time the omelette was cold. To be fair, this had noticeably improved just over the few days we stayed there.
Travelling with two young children, there was nothing much on the menu that suited them, and they only had chips (french fries to you ...) about every other day. For the adults, we like to eat Indian food while in India, but the menu was more aimed at a European audience.
On the children front: beware that the hotel policy is not to have TVs in the rooms. There is one communal TV, but this is no good for children. It's an easy thing to overlook.
In summary, beautiful hotel, well designed, great beds and bathrooms. A little pricy maybe (Rs 10,000 a night December 2012), but a classy place with a good pool, and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Rooms 102/103 have great little patios if you like to go swimming, or like to sit outside chewing the fat into the early hours. 101 has a little private secluded garden to itself.

Eighth Bastion is part of CGH group and this hotel just opened. Modern rooms, plenty of space and big bathroom with huge shower and mosaic bathtub. Food is good, Dutch colonial influences, but there are nicer places in Cochin if you look for restaurant with atmosphere. Certainly recommend this hotel, try to avoid room 102/103 as opposite reception and can be very noisy.
