We arrived in Fort Kochi on Saturday 4th May on the ferry from Ernakulam. We had no idea where we were going and so followed everyone else as we hoped it would lead to some sort of town centre. We had massive rucksacks on and had already walked a fair distance so were visibly knackered. Suddenly we were accosted by a woman offering us a cheap double room (500 rupees)- needless to say we were a bit suspicious, as any traveller is when offered something, but we checked it out and decided we'd go for it. Our room was none AC, over looking the road, with two single beds pushed together. It was totally clean, had a working TV which received american film channels, a decent ensuite, and spacious to boot. I mean that is already luxury to a couple of travellers, but to cap it all there was WiFi available in the hallway for 30 rupees a day, and Linda and Thomas were like parents to us. We ended up staying there a week, we loved it that much. Linda helped us out with places to visit, told us about festivals and even ended up putting the price down on the room. Her son lent my friend his tablet when she needed to Skype home as mine had broken. Don't even consider staying anywhere else, you wouldn't enjoy fort kochi half as much. Its located just north of the ferry landing from ernakulam, and you only need to walk 5 minutes to reach the tourist hub. Word of advice though- the hippies next door are awesome, but don't hop the balcony as I did, the police are likely to get involved!

Room Tip: They are all of the same high standard, but the room at the back is likely quieter as its not overlo...

We didn't get to stay at this inn but were fortunate enough to experience the friendliness and warmth of the lovely couple that manage it, Linda and Thomas. On a night that was difficult to navigate the area of Fort Kochi due to power blackouts and the fact that it was Good Friday, they took us in off the street. My brother and I, having just arrived in Fort Kochi, were walking in darkness, searching for a place to have an evening drink and snack when we decided to ask a lone stranger for some advice. As he was explaining our futile situation, a woman hurriedly approached us from the building he was standing in front of. As her english was much better, she explained why nothing was open at that time and why there was a blackout. However, realising that we had just arrived in Kochi, she took it upon herself to invite us in to her own private dining area where we sat with her husband to enjoy some fresh bananas and mangoes along with some lovely chai and quite a few glasses of irish whiskey which had been gifted to Thomas and was still in the box when he brought it out. We enjoyed a great evening of conversation with this lovely couple who also organised a backwater cruise for us the next day, complete with a traditional indian breakfast cooked by Linda herself. This couple really put the 'home' in homestay and I would head straight there if I ever visited Fort Kochi again.

My husband and I generally prefer the countryside to towns, but wanted somewhere central to stay in Fort Kochi for one day and booked through Kence from Eco Trails Kerela.

We arrived at night after a 45 minute drive from the airport and if you have not been to India before the street is it is in looks by UK standards to be pretty scruffy but don't let this put you off, as if you are used to India you realise it is probably pretty typical of most towns. The property itself was very smartly painted when viewed from the outside, Linda was very welcoming and very accommodating over the timing of breakfast to ensure we had a chance to recover from the flight by getting some sleep. Once we ventured out we realised just how well located the place is as you can do all the the main sights on foot or for a few rupees in one of the many tuc tucs and it is just a few 100 yards from the beach and the Chinese fishing nets.

This is at the cheaper end of the price range and you have to bear that in mind but the property is clearly old, in a good way, with detailed plaster work on the ceilings and our room was clean with dark varnished woodwork, with a very Indian colour scheme in our room of green walls and red curtains.

The room we were in had a window on to the street. We kept it closed to keep the room cool and keep out insects but you are in a town and there was some road noise, especially as the spice market (which was fascinating) is just down the road. That said we both slept well. We had two beds pushed together to form a double and a single bed, with both sheets and blankets. The aircon was very effective which was really important given how hot it was at the time we visited although the battery was a little flat - so you needed to hold it close to the air con unit to get it to work. Had we stayed longer I would have asked Linda to sort this out.

Probably worth mentioning at this point that there appears to be more of an issue with mosquito's in Kochi generally than some of the other places we stayed in Kerela, so probably best to keep the windows shut and make you use repelant at all times. We used Life systems expedition which comes in a 100ml bottle for travel and that did the job for us.

The bathroom was functional and clean but by UK standards could have done with a bit of a tidy up to deal with some cracked tiles/freshen up the paintwork on the door.

There wasn't a lounge area, but there is a balcony and some chairs to sit on upstairs which overlooks the street and a hallway which seems to have a good breeze through it and the minute we sat down there we were immediately offered refreshments and in the heat the unending supply of masala tea was very welcome.

We are vegetarian and the food was homely southern Indian cooking and plenty of it which we really enjoyed, served at a small table (seats 4) at the back of the house. We had paid for bed and breakfast but Linda very obligingly produced a great evening meal for us as well.

In fact Linda was not only incredibly helpful but also genuinely concerned about us because we were driving ourselves and insisted on us borrowing a map and her son's phone to ensure we had an Indian mobile with us in case we got lost and needed to make phone calls to get directions. Obviously we returned both at the end of the trip, but this was in our view above and beyond anything we could possibly have expected.

To be honest we'd probably go back just to see Linda and I think if I was backpacking and had been away from home for a while or was missing family Linda would do a great job of making it feel like home.

This one is a beauty , It is such a refreshing change to get some one like Linda in a tourist region who is so happy to help and arrange things from delicious breakfast of idly or a sumptuous spread of dinner to an Enfield motor bike for a day . Linda was able to organise anything without being intrusive , it was just like coming home and have mother look after you. We loved our time in Fort Kochin
We'll be back
PS Loved the Visual Arts exhibition in all the old buildings awesome

We stayed one night at Fort Inn. Linda was sweet and kind and met all our requests with a smile. She made us a delicious breakfast of idlies and coconut chutney. However, the rooms and the beddings were not up to the mark in terms of cleanliness.
