“Beautiful ancestral homestay in Kottayam town”
Reviewed 1 September 2012

We stayed for a very short time (just a few hours) at Kanjirakkattu, but it made a lasting impact on us. I was looking for a day tour on our last day in Kerala, and I posted the query here on TA forum. Priya (the owner) replied promptly and fixed me a trip to the Poonjar hills, complete with lunch at the homestay and a large AC car for our disposal.

The heritage suite looked quite regal, with period furniture of the bygone era... we felt like royalty staying there ;). It was big enough for a family of 4 adults, and the bathroom was spotless. Lots of storage space. Priya's mom showed us around the home. It had a nice garden in front, complete with a duck pond! It would be great to have an outdoor seating, for 4, that woul really complete the picture.

Unfortunately Priya was not in station during our short stay but her mother looked after us very well. Lunch was amazing, my mom who never eats fish on certain days broke her fast and ate one! It was that good. We had lunch at the owners' dining room itself, and Priya's mom fussed over us, completely spoiling us. Then we had a short rest until it was time for us to leave for the railway station.

I recommend Kanjirakkattu for anyone who need to stay in Kottayam town, and experience an authentic homestay. The homestay is not located in the town center though, so you need private or rented transportation to go anywhere. All in all, a very quiet and serene place.

When travelling in Kerala in March 2012 i spent only one night in this homestay but enjoyed it very much. Priya and her mother were so nice and i had a very warm welcoming - they wanted me to feel at home and that was really relaxing before my adventure on the Backwaters.
Dinner was quite good and in the end Priya didn't want me to pay for it - so i got it for free! I'm not sure if she's a little bit aware that the room price is too high and this was the reason why i got it cheaper...and this is the only reason why i don't give 5 stars to this nice homestay - compared to the prices in India it's too expensive, but because i was booking it at home it seemed to be cheap. I learned after one week that they have really different prices in India - everything is so cheap and you can sleep for 300-600INR/night (which i did at the end of the trip) but on the other hand Homestays offer much for what you pay and so i think it was ok!
I can definitely recommend this Homestay!

Wonderful hospitality and lovely food. Pachu and his grandma really made us feel at home. They made us feel at home (they even arranged a car for us to take us to train station at 2 am!)
A beautiful family, thanks!

This was a wonderful three night stay in a lovely quiet house with a lovely family. The food was unbelievably good, with fresh fruit juices, salad and Keralan food. We loved hearing about Pachu's school day and so much enjoyed Priya's warm welcome and companionship. I certainly hope that someday I can go back.
