“Comfortable , warm & friendly welcome”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

A few minutes out of the centre of town ,and set back some 20mtrs from the road , this smart well appointed house offered home comforts . The host and her family were extremely helpful , advising and booking local activities and transporting me around . The room was spacious and comfortable - I certainly didn't experience any of the noise which another reviewer found a problem . The shower was the best I experienced in India !!
The food was simple , good quality and tasty . The host even tutored me through a lesson in perpetration of a local fish moli . I would recommend .

Room Tip: Pick a room at the back if you think road noise maybe a problem

There must be two Chithrasala Homestays in Kumily as the one we booked did not compare with the reviews we read. We booked it on the basis of 4.5 out of 5 but we can’t score it low enough! We booked for 5 nights but left after just 1.

Here’s why:

1.Not one review mentioned the constant noise from the road…..the communal balcony has a view of the busy road and is not relaxing……it’s India so its beep, honk, beep, honk, beep….. just plain unnecessary noise from buses, trucks, cars etc. The homestay is directly off the main road from Munnar.

2. The property is sandwiched between two small roads/tracks. The one on the side where our room was leads to a hotel and created some noise as rickshaws, trucks taxis and staff were entering and leaving. On the other side of the property another road leads to, I think, a residential area with traffic and people creating similar amounts of noise.

3.The bed was very hard and even by Indian standards….hard!

4.Incredibly poor value. Having arrived we did our normal thing and did a sanity check on rates at other homestays. We checked 4 with similar spec. rooms but in a much quieter location yet still close to the centre of town. Rate was 500R’s/night plus around 150R’s for two breakfasts. That makes Chithrasala more than 100% overpriced.

5.We came to the homestay looking for good home cooked Keralan food. Dinner was chapatti, sloppy mashed potato with chillies and sliced cucumber. We said we didn’t eat a lot, but we do like spicy food so there’s no excuse for serving such poor quality, unimaginative food. We left it and went to town and had a thali for 120R’s each which had 8 different dishes plus more rice and breads than we could eat. When we questioned the price at Chithrasala that we had been quoted by email for veg food (175R’s) we were told that there had been a misunderstanding between husband and wife. Either way we said, 175R’s for an appalling dinner is just not good enough even if it was meant to be 175R’s for 2! (Quite how 175R’s makes two dinners I’m not sure as how do you divide that for one person!!??).

6.When we said that we were leaving we were told we could pay 600R's without breakfast if we stay. So, it's yet another example of book over the internet and overpay.

On the positive side, the rooms are clean, the water is hot and the shower good, breakfast was very good and the miniscule TV does show some English channels including the BBC news. However, at least 2 TV’s do not work so a minimum of two rooms will be unlucky if this place is full!

If I were you I would head to the tourist office near the bus stand and keep walking to the right of it. There are lots of good rooms for 500R’s/night down a lane that goes nowhere so it gets quieter the further you go up.

We fully enjoyed our stay. Mr.and Mrs. both extremely helpful and kind. Sorted us out with tickets to the reserve gave us rides, coached us on using bus and train - all round made us feel very welcome. Great location within easy walk to town centre. Highly recommend.

Chitrashala homestay is a decent cozy property in Thekkady. The biggest advantage of this place is that it is not overcrowded. Only 4 rooms to stay on the first floor with the owners staying on the ground floor. Very supportive and care taking owners. With two small kids with us, we felt that place was optimum sized with lots of open area for them to run around. There is a nice sit out on the first floor where you can enjoy your tea/ snacks in a relaxed manner. Rooms are decently sized for a family of three (couple + one child below 5 yrs) and were very clean. We were served breakfast and tea/ coffee at the place. They checked on the previous night for when we would like to have breakfast and it was ready at the same time. Overall, we would recommend this place which is not overtly fancy but meets all basic needs of a decent stay and with good compassionate owners who are really helpful.

Chithrasala is a very nice homestay! We loved staying there! The owners provided us with a lot of useful information about activities and local culture. Bindu is a very good cook and Shaji is a very good guide. The rooms are clean, spacious and beautiful. Also the rest of the house is very cosy. We had a wonderful stay there and would definitely go back if we had the chance! Thank you Bindu and Shaji for your hospitality!

Our two day stay began at chithrasala witha a warm welcome from Mr Shaji and Bindu.
Bindu took care of us all the time like a family member. The food was excellent, words wont explain the shear pleasure and satisfaction. The hosts are very generous and gave us the proper directions. It was simply a superbstay in chithrasala.

If you want to be in heaven,be in chithrasala.
