“Lovely Stuff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2012

Through a recommendation we stayed here just the one night with a small group of friends; a fantastic choice with great food and hosts. They were genuinely lovely people who helped us discover the local area.

Really enjoyed our time here, the food was very tasty and some of the best we had in India! They catered well to our different tastes and easily toned down the spice if required. Zach and Ramani were so friendly and very helpful at recommending where to go. The location is right beside the elephant ride and wash which was great fun!! The rooms all had fans and were comfortable. As with all accommodation in the south of India, there are power cuts twice a day to reserve electricity so don't be startled if the power goes off twice for half an hour. Yes, the rooms are not on the huge side, but we planned to be out all day doing all the amazing activities and there was a private living room for all six of us anyway. I would certainly stay here again.

To highlight the positives, the experience of spending a few days with the family of Reverend Zach and Ramani was as charming as a homestay experience is supposed to be. The warmth of sharing a cup of tea on arrival, the piping hot breakfasts that Ramani prepared every morning, and the dinner that we had with them the last evening, were all parts of the treasures that we accumulated during our two days of stay with the Koshys. The 'home' part of the homestay worked out just beautifully.

However, on the more practical aspect of it, the 'stay' wasn't as comfortable. The room was very small for three persons, with hardly any space left for moving around after three beds were laid out. The beds were smallish (not meant for anyone over 5'9"), and the hot water supply was simply inadequate (no geysers). A couple of light-bulbs in the room were found to be fused on arrival, and they stayed like that throughout the two days of our stay. This was one of the more expensive properties that we stayed at during our Kerala vacation, and even then it lacked in basic comforts.

This also lacks a space for the driver to sleep in, and the driver has no other option but to arrange for his own space (or sleep in the car). This isn't something that would make a conscientious traveler happy, especially if you've been traveling around with a cab for over a week and want your driver to have basic comfort.

We really enjoyed the Koshys homestay in Kumily. Everything was good, including the rooms and the location. Zach and Ramani were very welcoming and helpful in arranging transport and activities for us. We ate most of our meals here and they were all excellent. We had interesting and enjoyable discussions with Zach, Ramani and other guests over the dining table. Because we expressed interest in Indian cooking Ramani gave us brilliant cooking demonstrations and recipes for the delicious food we ate during our stay. There is plenty to do in the area, including bamboo rafting in the Periyar reserve (which Zach booked for us before we arrived), elephant rides and spice plantation visit. If we go back to Kerela we will definitely stay here again!

We arrived in Kumily by bus from Munnar, having telephoned Zach prior to leaving Munnar so he knew when to expect us. He kindly arranged for his driver to pick us up at the bus satation.
On arriving at the homestay, where we had booked 3 nights, we were very warmly greeted by Zach and his wife, Ramani.
We were the only people staying in the homestay, so had full use of the lounge shared by the rooms. there was also a kitchen area where you could make tea/coffee when you wanted.
Our double room was very comfortable, and a wonderful hot shower in the bathroom!
We had booked to do the 2 day tour, which included, Bamboo Rafting and Jungle Jeep Safari, both were EXCELLENT!
We enjoyed 2 evening meals, cooked by Ramani, the food was delicious! Zach joined us at the meal table, and we had some interesting discussions about many topics.
The walk into the town was about 10 mins. or it was easy to get a tut tut.
We were able to have washing done, which was a real bonus.
We were made to feel very welcome in this homestay and enjoyed our time here.
On leaving , Zach arranged for his driver to take us back to the bus station and ensure we caught the right bus to Kottayam.

Although we had reserved and paid for this homestay many weeks prior to our departure we were informed ten days before our arrival that due to renovations it wasn't possible to host us and we were offered alternative accommodation which we accepted. I cannot therefore comment on this homestay.

However, I can comment on the fact that I was surprised to find out during our time in Kumily that Koshys was hosting a group of 16 young students from World Challenge. I then discovered that a further 9 members of that group whom I met in Kumily who said they had been booked to stay Koshys, were also now being accommodated elsewhere. It would appear that at least for the during of our original booking (four nights) that accommodation had been offered to a total of 27 people.

Koshys, Owner at Koshys Homestay, responded to this review, 1 September 2011
Sorry Dorrie,

We thought that the homestay was not in great shape. That is why we had decided about the renovation. The student group was supposed to stay in a lodge and last minute the lodge guys said its not available. So we had to accommodate them, some how. After they left, we have done the renovation work.

As we had offered, we are ready to do the full repayment. Terribly sorry about the confusion.

Vishal.
