Thekkady Spice Valley Holiday Hotel

Reviewed 10 May 2014

I travelled with my family to Kerala in April 2014. I used Yatra.com to book my tour. Based on the hotel list provided, I chose a select group of hotels in the cities that I would be visiting during the tour. However, after payment, Yatra changed one of my hotels in Thekkady from Michael's inn/Grand Thekkady to this one....The spice valley resort. Despite my repeated requests to not book my stay in this motel, the yatra representatives did not pay heed to my requests.

Since the payment was made to Yatra, what could I do. I had to go with what they had booked for me. I was expecting very little from this motel, but it turned out to be even worse. This has compelled me to write this review and tell you my experience with this hell of a hotel. First, this is not equivalent to the Grand Thekkady hotel or Michael's inn. No matter how much Yatra told me, it was no where comparable to the Grand Thekkady/Michael's inn which we happened to pass by while visiting the Periyar Tiger reserve. Both Grand Thekkady and Micahel's inn are right in the middle of the market/city and are both close to the Periyar tiger reserve, while the spice valley resort in the middle of the residential apartments, far away from the city center.

The spice valley resort was still under construction and we were the ONLY guests present in this hotel at that time. Nobody else checked in. Imagine!!! This one story building is still under construction. It is in a really dilapidated condition. Check out the pictures

There are only 4 staff members working and they handled everything. There is no telephone in the hotel which means you have to go the reception desk to order for room service. The food took 4 hours to cook (because there were just 4 persons here, like i said who handle everything). They didn't even have any vegetables to cook with. We ordered our meals and then the staff would go to the market to buy vegetables first. Also, 90% of the menu items were unavailable. The hotel would run out of water, and then we would have to walk to the front desk (coz we couldn't make a phone call) and request them to turn on the motor so we could get some water in the taps. The list is endless

We didn't take the complementary breakfast on one day, still on the second day the staff couldn't muster up a decent breakfast. They got 6 small bread pieces for the four of us and everything was being counted.....how many pieces of parathas we ate....how much were left over, etc. Really miser staff.

The rooms were alright. New fixtures in bathroom, AC, 20 inch flatscreen, etc. but the overall hotel property, location and staff were way below par. I do not understand how can anyone even rate this motel as anything but "terrible"

Room Tip: Always ask for an AC room.

Considering that it is a small property with no glam sham around it, what it really offers are new and big rooms (I think I booked one level above the basic room category) with nice bed and big bathroom. Above and all, the hospitality by the staff is praiseworthy. They all were committed to guest service and thus, I would like to thank all of them for making my one day stay, a pleasant one. If they could add hangars in their cupboard, I think it would be just perfect. I guess, the building in which they have reception is the annexe or the new building and therefore, the rooms and the bathrooms as well as the balcony was very neat and clean. Plus they did appear as brand new. If you want to get into a nice accommodation in economical fashion then this is the hotel to check-in.

Room Tip: Better if you get first floor room above the reception.

I had short break in India just before Christmas while on a business trip trip. Thekkady was not chosen earlier in my planing list but opted to have it to break my long journey to Bangalore via Madurai. It became a find decision in the end as I manage to meet two of my uni friends in Thekkady, one is from Bangalore and the other from AP We checked in at Spice Valley without huge expectations as it looked just a basic accommodation . We were really amazed from the point we checked in because the staff at the reception was talking to us in our slang!. The rooms are well maintained , neat and clean . We didn't had a dinner from there as we had other plans. The next morning they surprised us again with wide range of real sour Indian breakfast! I it was absolutely delicious . All the staff at the hotel was polite and friendly and showed a jump on approach
They offered us some private party space at the roof top if we extend our stay, but we couldn't take up that due to the schedules
I would like to recon I will stay at this place only if I ever visit Thekkady

my family spent our new year in Thekkady and stayed at Spice Valley. Though it was small property, the hospitality, cuisine was amazing and par with all standard. Location is not very far, ambience is good. Stay worth for what we pay.

Thekkady Spice Valley is highly valuable for money. We have enjoyed every moments at this hotel during our 4 days visit to Kerala . We travelled from Kodaikanal took about 4 hours to reach. Rooms are very good though bit small in size. Very scenic spice plantations around the hotel will take you to an absolute relaxation mood. All the staff are very friendly especially the restaurant team. The food was predominantly Kerala style and some well prepared yummy salads. We enjoyed morning walk to the nearby forest escorted by a staff member. I recommend to choose a roof top room where you can watch the spice plantations around
Altogether the stay was surely worth of money
