We arrived after a rather long drive from Trivandrum, but immediately found our haven in Spice Village. Our expectations were high, as we´d stayed at another CGH group place a few years ago, but we were not disappointed. Set in what is really a botanical garden, this is the ideal base from which to explore the Periyar reserve. Which we did, including boat ride, trek in the forest and elephant riding, but still found that the highlight of our three days here was the time we spent inside Spice Village itself.
We spent quite a bit of time at the nice little pool, and the two lovely restaurants not only made exquisite food, but were also flexible with our rather demanding family which inclused a choosy four-year old and a 73-year old gluten intolerant diabetic.
Spice Village also has a knowledgeable resident naturalist who´s ready to ask any question you may have and chefs who give instructive cooking demonstrations which make you run out and make sure you buy some of those spices to take home. And generally very helpful staff that will assist you with anything you ask.
One thing to improve: Our driver wasn't too happy about the drivers' accommodation. For a resort that is otherwise concerned with ethics and sustainability, providing well for drivers would be ok.More
