A unique place to stay on Kumily road, serves as a base for exploring Periyar wild life sanctuary !!
It's an ECO-hotel[CGH category] with huge area of greenery n wild life around, dotted with beautiful cottages !! Rooms spacious n well decorated - thanx after a long drive from Kovalam-we refreshed n explored the property. The atmosphere was full of spice-like aroma n so much tranquillity around ! Next day, early morning, set off for PERIYAR jungle visit in a jeep-- had no luck to see a tiger but could see elephants, deers, monkeys, some birds, etc. Afternoon returned back to our hotel, had nice lunch n tea,n relaxed. The staff was courteous. After a cooking demo in the evening n some entertainment programme,we had nice tasty dinner at their restaurant n retired early to bed as we had to proceed early morning for Alleppy for houseboat experience.Would recommend people to visit this hotel which offers tranquillity, warmth n hospitality in a unique manner !!

Room Tip: can access nature's beauty from any angle !!

On arrival we received a very warm welcome and orientation before being shown to our room where bags arrived promptly. Room was very spacious with nice lounge, was modern and nicely decorated and a very good ensuite with shower. Perfect cleanliness. The bungalows are in a lovely garden setting and very quiet, except for occasional animal noises, and dependent on wind, you may hear some early morning temple sounds. There is no television in rooms. Wifi is free and good quality but can only be used in restaurant, lobby and pool areas. Breakfast is an excellent selection of local, western and healthy options. The on site 50 mile restaurant is OK dining a la carte rather than evening buffet meal. Pool area is relaxing. Location is good with short walk to main shopping street in township or local shops along road outside hotel.

We stayed at the Spice Village for 1 night as part of our Travel Indochina Secrets of the South Tour.
This was our base for visiting Periyar National Park and a welcome stopping point after our drive from Cochin.

From reception to the walk to your cottage passing by the wildlife and restaurant that overlooks the pool area, to drinks at dusk and cooking demonstrations we could not fault a thing.

Our cottage was well back from reception and the main public areas and high up overlooking the property and was very tranquil. Cottages are very spacious and quite modern with a nice veranda to sit out on.

After a bit of exploring we met with our fellow travellers for a pre-dinner drink in the separate Bar building which is decorated in a sort of colonial lodge style. The Bar is a very nice setting and a great place to relax. You even get blessed sort of as they fumigate the place for mosquitoes with a big metal burner swinging from chains. Very dramatic but needed as there are plenty on mosquitoes in the hills.

There is also a cooking demonstration prior to dinner which is quite informative and if you give your details they even email you a PDF Cookbook of the recipes for many of the local dishes that they cook there.

They also have live entertainment with music and dancing but after 3 weeks in India we were entertained out so went to dinner instead.

Dinner was very nice and you can eat out on the veranda or inside. We ate chose outside even though I am a mosquito magnet but that wasn’t a problem. We had a very good meal, a few bottles of wine (Sula of course as you do in India) and even had a Birthday cake. It was my 50th birthday after all and what a special place to celebrate it during my visit to India.

This is known for being a quite retreat and that said there was no TV or Wi-Fi in the rooms themselves but there was Wi-Fi is you needed it in the common areas (Restaurant and Reception).

One of our highlights in India.

We arrived here after a long drive from Munnar. Right from welcome drink to check out everything was smooth. The property is amazing & beautiful.. highly recommend the property visit..The staff was very courteous and you could feel the warmth on hospitality that they offer. The cottages are beautiful with greenery all around. The cooking demo & classical dance performance was very good. The buffet spread at breakfast was good & food from Ala carte was delicious. Loved the Kozhi Mappas.. The staff was wonderful and ensured for a early check out from spice village due to "Hartal" in Idukki region. They also made arrangements for a early check in & breakfast in coconut lagoon. Overall amazing place... The sound of birds ad mist lush greenery...two days were less.. Hope to come back to spend more days very soon.. Keep up the good work..Highly reccomended..

From the chattering Guinea Fowl to the troops of visiting monkeys, the feel of this place is different from the moment you arrive. All the buildings are thatched with elephant grass giving an authentic village feel. There is a Ayurvedic Massage centre, swimming pool, tennis and badminton on site as well as a buffet restaurant, The Woodhouse bar in the form of a colonial club and an outside restaurant called 50 mile. The service was superb, everything you would expect from a good Indian Hotel. The only downside was the food at the 50 mile restaurant, we ate there once, the poultry was burnt to a cinder and the steak was inedible, the food in the buffet was much better. On the plus side they did present us with a lovely "Happy Married Life" cake in celebration of our honeymoon. Overall this is an excellent place to stay and a superb base from which to explore the local area.

We stayed here for a couple of nights with some elderly folks.
The Good:
Cottages: The hotel has cottages, traditional in a bush like setting with numerous plants that give spices. The whole atmosphere has a village feel to it and relaxing.
Food is above average, has a bit of variety but not outstanding or any thing. Most of the staff are friendly but we did come across a supervisor (girl) who was unnecessarily curt for no good reason. We left her alone, rest were fine and helpful. Food is expensive.
Guide: There was a guide, who wears fishing gear as a top, very helpful , basically organised our day with very little fuss. But, for him, we would have been mucking around a lot. He alone was worth the stay at the joint. He is qualified naturalist, genuine and smiles a lot.
Reception: There was a spectacled girl, very efficient and probably the best receptionist we saw in our entire trip. Wish we came across people like her often.
The older guy (bald headed) who help on the badminton court is great. He played with us, made the trip memorable. I could not believe he is only 55 or so.
The dancers: there was a traditional dance in the evening, dancers were ok, but the amphitheatre was enjoyable.
Overall - the place is run by Christian folks who has pitched this for european audience. Much better than lots of other places and definitely worth a visit. They have a chain of hotels and probably it will help organise if you are touring southern states.

Ah - the flutist who plays wooden flute at the restaurant - one word - DIVINE!!!

Room Tip: Ask the hotel to organise local trips, they are good at it and it will be a one stop shop. Mozzie...

Myself and my husband popped in for lunch before going to the Tiger reserve. We both enjoyed a very delicious meal in beautiful surroundings. The staff were very kind, especially since we were not guests at the hotel. I even saw a monkey!
