“Light, peaceful, spacious, private and clean”

My stay at Mundax was undoubtedly the highlight of my stay in Kerala. The privateness, peacefulness, cleanliness and space of Mathew's home and gardens were a real salve to the hustle and bustle of everyday life in India. It might sound strange, but I found the lightness of Mathew's home really soothing - other homes I visited were quite dark - perhaps it's a result of the shutters that keep out the heat - and in contrast the lightness, high ceilings and cool temperatures were blissful. It was the end of the monsoon season when I visited in August and I had difficulty adjusting to the climate in other parts of Kerala but found Kuttikanam a lot more comfortable. On a further visit I'd definitely do more of the days trips that are available like the Periyar Wildlife park, and also higher up the mountains to see more of the tea farms. I did make it to the Ayervedic retreat which is close by - and did a fascinating tour though their herbal medicine plant. Otherwise I was just happy to relax at Mundax and chill out doing very little except savour the relaxing environment and wonderful food - definitely worth another visit.

We really enjoyed the stay at Mundax for several reasons: Mathew's warm welcoming and delicate talk have charmed the whole. The room is very spacious with a good western bathroom very confortable bed and a great view on the beautiful garden.
The south indian prepared food a sprankling adventure each time, fine and delicious. It has been cooked with love and the wish to let the guests discover the richness of the Keralan cooking.
Don't stay only one night, and take the time to be there with Mathew and his environment, you will never forget.
A beautiful house, an amaisnig stay

Our three-night stay at Mundax was undoubtedly a highlight of our honeymoon in Kerala. The location is delightfully low-key, with beguiling views down the valley, but close enough to Thekaddy to take advantage of the activities on offer there- however for a short-ish stay I would say that doing so isn’t really necessary. The accommodation is spacious, clean and has a great book collection. As other reviewers have mentioned, Mathew went out of his way to help us plan our trip, taking us on a “pilgrimage” hill-walk and arranging an Ayurvedic massage at the local hospital- which was very much the genuine article, unlike some establishments in Thekaddy. The yoga sessions were also inspiring and Mathew is a great teacher. However the real charm of Mundax is the interaction with Mathew and the vibe he has created there. It’s more like staying with a friend than just another guest house! We have made five trips to India between us and have never found anywhere quite like this before. If you’re looking for a break from the hurly-burly of Indian travel and a chance to rest and reflect with convivial company and authentic Keralan food, you can’t do better than Mundax.

All aspects of our stay at Mundax were rated excellent except the location as some may want to be in a busier spot. Not the case for our trip but it may have been too quiet for some. The highland areas can resemble the lake district in places but obviously with much better weather.
Mathew and the staff are fabulous. You can get to your room and forget about the usual stresses encountered traveling in India. You can be overfed, under exerted and over indulged. Wether you are heading to the area for wildlife or quality time, don't hesitate to book you won't be sorry.

This is a proper homestay and Mathew (the host) has got it absolutely right. We would recommend Mundax to anyone who wants to be spoilt rotten, eat lovingly prepared food, visit Periyar/Thekkady without being stuck in Kumilly with all the other tourists, learn about Keralan life, chill out, do daily yoga classes (if that's your thing - Mathew's a great teacher whatever your level), visit spice gardens, do some walking etc etc.

From the moment we arrived and were shown to our large, airy room with our own terrace overlooking the garden we felt at home. Mathew offers you the run of the place and feeds you three yummy meals a day.

Lastly, be sure to use his driver Joey (who owns a small coffee plantation nearby) if you're coming from either the airport or somewhere else in Kerala. He's the safest driver in India and his A/C car is very comfortable!

Mundax Homestay was an idealic retreat for a couple of days from the busier parts of Kerala. Matthew was a wonderful host and the food was delicious and extremely plentiful. Had we stayed longer I'm not sure the plane would have been able to carry us home. The room was very large with excellent ensuite facilties and we were very well attended.

We had a fantastic driver Joy (arranged by Matthew) to pick us up from Cochin airport and to drive us around the day after. We visited Periyar Tiger Reserve for a trek, went Elephant riding and visited a Spice Garden. There is the option of doing yoga with Matthew however we were too exhausted by the end of the day and instead stopped at the one and only 'liquor shop' for a bottle of wine.

Mundax is an ideal place to visit for a quiet retreat and a chance to absorb the simple living of the area. I highly recommend it.

We stayed at Mundax for 2 nights this spring and it was great. The food is good and fresh prepared, the room is comfortable and spacious and Matthew is a warm and enthousiast host, more than willing to assist you in -e.g. booking an ayurvedic massage or another activity. We enjoyed it.
