“its looking better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 December 2011

Reviews I saw made me wonder, but this place was great! I think all of the room are ocean veiw with a balcony... it is not a big place as far as number of rooms. The rooms was HUGE with a full kitchen, granite counters, ceramic/marble floors, and carpet. It was very clean and everything worked great. The bed was SOO comfortable! Plus it was quiet, even though we were staying over the 4th of July weekend. We loved it and definately plan to return

Room Tip: I assume they are all the same, and nice!

We stayed here for 2 nights and couldn't wait to leave. It's dark inside so you cant really see whats lurking! This dark interior is a particular style in Kerala and when done correctly is stunning but this room stank of smoke and felt dirty. It wasn't just the mosquitoes and the dozens of beetles that emerged in the bathroom during the night but the managerial approach. We booked the room for rs700 and when leaving were charged rs1000. When my husband protested the reception filled with men who clearly all have a hand in the business. We paid to avoid problems but I would advise to go for any of the many other much nicer and better run establishments on the Cliff. We moved to the Green Palace and also spent some time in Villa Anamika (both of which were lovely) and rs1000 per night. My advice - stay somewhere else!

Ended up here on recommendation from Villa Anamika, and couldn't be more different. The exterior is made of bamboo (not to be confused with the Kerala Bamboo House which which you walk through to get to the beach), and looks great on first sight. We had a room in the main building on the first floor. The rooms are somewhat dark, bathrooms are kinda just weird looking, and prices 2500 rupees and upwards for a place that is not as good as Villa Anamika. But it was fine and still reasonable, with the place all lit up in the evening giving it a magical vibe - but it wasn't the place that spoilt it for us, but the owner/manager.
He locked onto us from the moment we we there, always on the look out to extract the maximum cash. He also runs a restaurant that lines the cliff, and found us on the cliff enticing us to eat at his place as we were his 'special guests'. The food was great it has to be said, but then tried to overcharge us for food we didn't have. At this point he was already worse for wear, and also offered us some waccy baccy after the meal and tried to pressure us into eating at his place the next day. He also offered us a trip to Trivandrum for the day in his car at a 'special price'. When he found out we were doing yoga classes and ayurveda sessions, he tried to get us to change to his ayurveda place, and when we were leaving for Cochin, he urged us to go there is his taxi service and then wanted to book a hotel for us there. Basically he was a Mr. Big character, with fingers in many pies in the area, treating his staff none too well, and had a generally overbearing demeanor. It was the constant pressure from him that was irritating, completely at odds with the spiritual vibe that is Varkala. On our departure (with another taxi), he took our money and didn't say a word to us.
