“Wonderful place - lives up to the reviews.”
Reviewed 27 February 2011

Wonderful, peaceful, laid back place located on the south cliff with direct access to a quiet beach, while still within easy access of the North cliff (10-15 minutes walk). Rooms cute and clean with veranda and hammock overlooking the well kept gardens and the sea (great sunset spot at the bottom of the garden on the edge of the cliff). Shine & co were very friendly: No hassle. Beach towels and parasols supplied, efficient laundry service, great breakfast overlooking the sea… Our favourite place in Kerala!

A bit pricey by Indian standards but worth it. Great setting, spotlessly clean rooms, and a helpful staff.

Great location. Fantastic view of the cliff and sea.
Rooms large, clean, comfortable.
Situated on south cliff which is really quiet. The beach is like a private beach with no touts, sellers or hassle.
We swam despite hearing that the sea is dangerous, lots of other people in the water but for safety didnt go out too far.
North cliff is about 10mins walk away. Very touristy, loads of restaurant, hotels and shops. Only after visiting there did we realise what a gem we had found in this hotel!
Only negatives would be the limited breakfast choices (we stayed 5 nights so were a bit omletted out by the end); lack of food availability after breakfast (so you have to walk around the bay, really not far, we are nit-picking here!); though the location, views and rooms were great it is very expensive compared to elsewhere that we stayed in India. No TV/phone in the room which we would expect for that price.

I was looking for a safe and gentle introduction to the culture of India as a first-time solo traveler there. While the lights and activity of North Cliff may be attractive to others, I was more interested in gazing at the stars from a hammock. Shine, the owner of the Sea Shore Beach Resort, has created a haven on the South Cliff of Varkala. From the carved wooden bed frames to the well-manicured grounds, the Sea Shore is simply elegant. Every day I felt grateful to awaken to the sound of the Arabian Sea and to have direct access to a quiet beach via steps carved into the cliff. I had a front row seat for fourteen gorgeous sunsets. Shine and his staff are available 24/7 to tend to the needs of their guests, whether for an afternoon cup of tea or suggestions for outings. They encouraged me to venture out to explore the natural and cultural beauty of Kerala. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are clean, and the rooms are serviced daily. In the reception area, there is a computer with internet access and a bookshelf with novels and travel guides. Shine will arrange properly priced transportation to and from the airport. Breakfast and beach towels are included. Also, water, tea, and coffee throughout the day. Restaurants overlooking the main beach of Varkala are within walking distance, and the food is delicious. Nightlife is a twenty minute walk or short rickshaw ride away, but if you're looking for a drunken holiday revel, find accommodation elsewhere. Please remember to add to the tip box before you leave.

We had a great stay with our 2 year old who loved all the attention she got from all the staff. Room was great - cool even though we didn't have AC, comfortable, cleaned everyday, great views and best of all own access to the beach. Need to watch the cliff though if you have young children. It was nice to be away from all the hustle of the main beach and north cliff but not too far to walk there. Breakfast is included in the price- we loved the fresh pineapple juice! Shine has plans to build more rooms, a restaurant and a swimming pool so get there before its gets too busy!

We stayed at Sea Shore for 2 x nights in January & it was absolutely amazing. The owners are delightful & extremely helpful. Our room was spotless & we loved having a hammock to relax in right outside our front door. The grounds are kept beautifully and lead to the edge of the south cliff with stunning views & private steps down to a peaceful & secluded beach, a much calmer option to the more crowded North beach, which is a very accessible 10-15 minute walk away.
A yummy breakfast is also included in the price of the room, which you can enjoy looking over the garden & onto the shimmering sea. There is also access to free internet & the room is cleaned daily.
We would HIGHLY recommend Sea Shore, it is incredible value for money - we could not fault it & sitting here in a cold, dark London I wish I was back there in the hammock!
Thank You Sea Shore!

This really was the perfect place to stay in Varkala. The staff were all friendly and helpful and provided a welcome drink on arrival as well as useful information about Varkala and a map. The cottages and bedrooms surround a beautiful garden with palm trees and hammocks. The cottage rooms are huge and lovely, I'd definitely recommend booking one if you can. However the standard rooms are also good (we had booked a standard room but were lucky enough to get a cottage due to a cancellation, for all but our last night, so have experienced both).
There are steep steps direct from the hotel's garden leading down to a beautiful, quiet, peaceful beach. The hotel will lend you a beach umbrella and beach towels each day at no extra cost.
There is one PC in the reception area with free internet access.
It is a short walk to the South Cliff restaurants (particularly recommend Varkala Marine Palace for fantastic tandoori fish & Keralan fish in banana leaf), and a longer walk (20-30 mins) to the much busier North Cliff where there are tons of shops and restaurants. It is very easy to get an auto-rickshaw from the North Cliff back to the hotel at night.
Breakfast is served upstairs on a balcony with a great view out to sea. The service at this hotel was excellent, all of the staff were friendly and helpful and it was no trouble to organise laundry, onward journeys, etc. Thoroughly recommended and would love to go back!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It's a very beautiful piece of paradise. It's a guest house (I couldn't call it something so cold as a resort) that delivers excellent service with a low key spirit of wanting to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. The rooms are clean, comfortable and the higher-end suites are exceptionally lovely and all for prices that make this the very best value I have almost ever experienced in all my travels.
