“Paradise on earth!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

We stumbled upon this heaven on earth by accident... Luckily they had a large room on the ground floor with a balcony looking over the wonderful exotic garden. The price was very reasonable. This guesthouse is perched upon the cliff overlooking the incredible South Beach, a stone's throw away from the busy North Cliff and its touristy shops. And yet immersed in utter tranquility! The only noise we hear in the morning is the whistling of birds! A two minute climb down the stairs at the end of the garden lead you to the beach. Kilometers of white sand! The hotel staff are incredibly helpful and keep the place in a very good condition. Food and juices can be bought in the little restaurant in the garden. For the price, this place must surely be the best in Varkala!

I was suprrise to find golden beach guest house so comfortable, clean and valuble.
Since I'm traveling for a ehile I wad looking for a cheap place and suprisinglly found one that feels more like hotel rather than guest house.
The location is good, right between the black beach and the north cliff. It worst staying if you don't want to spend too much but want to have a nice, quiet staying.

We called and made a reservation for two nights on the day we arrived, as we hadn't been able to get in contact with the hotel of our choice. The only A/C room avalible was expensive (4050 rupees) as it had sea view. First, the rickshaw driver took us to the wrong place, as there is a Golden Beach hotel on the north cliff of Varkala as well. When we finally arrived, there was no one in the reception. Eventually the manager appeared and told us that our room was ready. He showed us the room which was unimpressive even at first sight. However, we accepted it and checked in, being asked if we had a pen to fill in the forms with. When we came back to the room we noticed that there was only one towel (but three beds), no soap, no toilet paper, no light on the balcony, broken floor tiles hidden under the carpet, etc. More seriously, there was no remote control for the A/C so you could turn it on but not get it to cool the room, i.e. it was totally pointless. We went back down to the reception to point this out to the manager, who was in the middle of arranging something for other guests but ran off to tell "the boys" to fix our room. The boys, who spoke very little English, came up with us and gave us the stuff we wanted but didn't know anything about the A/C, so after a while just left. We went down again one or two times with the same result, before we furiously went off for dinner somewhere else. Of course nothing had been done when we came back and the room was as hot as before. We had to sleep as best we could in the heat with the balcony door open. There was no mosquito net, screen door, or anything to hang our own net in above the bed, so obviously we woke early with lots of new mosquito bites. After having arranged new accomodation we checked out, explained our complaints to the manager and refused to pay the whole sum. Through the whole ordeal the manager displayed no sense of service at all and it was very clear that he had no organised manner of running the hotel. Only after I had pointed out that we hadn't even received an apology, he gave us one (very reluctantly) when we had already walked out the door.

The hotel was nice enough, but we should have been more persistant about the broken light and hot water service that never got fixed, but the biggest mistake was to get a quote for a travel package of them, which was much cheaper from another travel agent. The package included several hotels at a certain value and an english speaking driver. They did end up matching the other agents price but we should have known better, because what we ended up with was a non english speaking driver and hotels that were at best backpacker price range,so in total we figure that we were out of pocket to the tune of 4000-5000 rupees!

Room Tip: Upstairs with balcony would be the pick

golden beach resort has decent sized rooms with balconies overlooking a quiet garden and out to sea over the cliff. prices are more than competitive. the staff are friendly. you can descend the cliff straight from the garden to a quiet part of the beach, nice. there are good seafront restaurants 5 minutes walk away with excellent fresh fish caught daily on display (you pick your actual fish). northcliff is a further 5 minutes walk from there, where you will find many restaurants and shops etc. if you want some peace and quiet but still be near enough to the action then this is a good choice. i came for 4 days and stayed for 15...

We stayed in golden beach for 2 weeks. it is very nice place, comfortable rooms. Very good restaurant with tasty kerala, italian and european foods. We enjoyed the stay very much. We practiced YOGA here. There is very good compound for practising yoga. Watch sunset is very beautiful from here. We were able to go to beach from the resort through the steps. When we leave here we feel something missed to us.

Room Tip: Most of the rooms are sea view
