“A Wonderful Place to Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2012

Kaiya House is more of a B&B than a hotel – but one of the best that I have ever stayed in. Spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated with care and attention to detail. And Debra is so welcoming that her guests feel like they are coming home. The outside terraces are lovely to eat breakfast, relax and read a book – or have a massage or yoga class which Debra can arrange. Her excellent network of efficient and reliable drivers are also very helpful. And she has lots of recommendations for restaurants, day trips etc which makes the stay in Varkala much easier and more enjoyable. Note that there are no curtains on the bedroom windows – so I’m glad I kept the eye mask from the flight – otherwise I would have been woken up by daylight – but that’s just a minor issue. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay and I highly recommend it.

Our family of four booked to stay at Kaiya House months ago. We arrived off a dusty overnight train to be treated to an early check-in and once we cleaned up, were offered fresh fruit on the sit-out and the best mugs of black coffee we'd had in weeks. The new rooftop is a great place to hang out, as is the garden. Don't miss a walk around the well. We appreciated Debra's local knowledge and she is well respected by the locals and this flows on to their treatment of her guests. Just go there, relax and enjoy being pampered by Debra and her staff!

I had the absolute pleasure of staying with Debra and family at Kaiya House in December 2011 for 5 nights.
It was hands down one of the best stays I have ever had in India.
Firstly, Debra was the perfect Hostess.....the entire time we felt as though we were staying at a friends house, not paid accommodation.
The house is beyond clean....and I mean Western standard clean....very tastefuly decorated, free wifi, books to read, lovely rooftop space for chilling out, reading, yoga, whatever...
Excellent food, clean water supplied daily.
Debra was always available to give advice on the area and great tips.
I could go on an on about how great a place this is to stay....but i'll just say, don't hesitate if you are trying to make a decision abotu staying here.
I cannot say 1 bad thing about this place.
Happy Travelling,
Anna Papas, Sydney Australia

The Kaiya House is a beautiful house with great atmosphere. Debra and her staff are very friendly and the guided tour of the cliff is a great way to get to know surroundings. The drivers are great and most of all; safe. Our room was very cosy and very clean. Kaiya House is located a ten minute walk from the cliff, where most restaurants are located.

I am just coming to the end of a month's stay at Kaiya House. I won't go into detail about the various bedrooms etc as they have been aptly described by previous reviewers. Suffice to say they are as lovely as others have stated and I can add that this is a place where you do actually get what it says on the tin. Having observed during the course of a month, Debra and her small team dealing with the constant everchanging retinue of guests I can truly testify to her incredible enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism. The desire for people to enjoy their time at Kaiya House and in Varkala is as genuine as it is remarkable and is a masterclass for would be hoteliers. Her sole aim in life appears to be to give her guests a good time and nothing will get in her way to prevent this. Guests arriving in the middle of the night? No problem, Debra will be there to greet them. Guests looking a little lost and lonely? No problem, Debra will be over laughing and chatting. And on and on it goes. Her little army of helpers even extends to taxi drivers and rickshaw drivers. She has managed to enlist the two most careful, courteous and most importantly slow drivers in all of India so when you arrive at the airport or wherever you dont have a white knuckle drive to Varkala rather a sedate and non nervewrecking arrival. As for Apu the rickshaw man, he's the best one in town.
I could go and on about this place but I think I'll let you discover the other hidden delights.
Darling, delightful, delicious, delovely Debra. The hostess with the mostest!!!

Kaiaya House is not only an hotel, a B&B a guest house; Kaiaya house is a synesthetic experience for the guests.

It is decorated with an extreme care for the details and a true artist touch and is provided with areas for all of your senses: there are areas where you can eat the wonderful morning breakfast prepared by the lovely staff, a place where you can play chess, scarabeo or any of the very many board games available, a place where you can pick a book from the shelf and read in peace, a place where you can think or do yoga, areas where you can meet the other guests and share thoughts and point of views about life, religion or simply about the weather, a place where you can watch the stars at midnight surrounded by silence

The rooms are great and decorated with different cultural/geographical themes.

Debrah, the owner, is simply a wonderful person whose only objective is making sure that her guests will have a good time and enjoy the "beauty" around. Not only. She is definitely a sensitive artist. Not only. She is in a vibrant and uncommon sintony with all of "her people" (the guests as well as the staff) which feel immediately at home as soon as they enter the house. Not only. She is discreetly active among the local community to help improving the condition of those who are not as lucky.

If you go to Varkala make sure you spend few days at Kaiya house!

We were impressed by the exquisitely decorated rooms, charming character of the house and the loveliness and attentiveness of the owner. Really could not ask for more and at a very modest price. Hands down the best stay in our India trip.
