We, a family of two adults and one teenage child, stayed at Kaiya House for 3 nights, and, thanks largely to our host Debra, had a wonderful and memorable time.
We stayed in two rooms- one air-conditioned, and one non air-conditioned, and both were spacious, comfortable and even the non AC was not too hot. The rooms were decorated interestingly with cultural themes from around the world.
Soon after our arrival at the colourfully-decorated Kaiya House, our host Debra informed us that there would be a Hindu temple festival on in a near-by village, and arranged for us to get there and see it. We are very thankful that we did get to go and have this unique experience, and confident that if we hadn't been staying with such a warm host who was prepared to go above and beyond to enrich the stay of her guests, we would have missed out on one of the best afternoons of our trip in South India. Another example of our host's dedication was when, on our arrival, she showed our family about Varkala, pointing out good places to eat and locally-run shops, to orient us and ensure we had a good stay.
Breakfast was tasty and fresh every morning and hot drinks were always available to us during our stay.
We even got to go on an early beach walk through fishing villages one morning, once again due to the hospitality of our host.
Debra was also an invaluable source when we had questions about whether it would be appropriate to go swimming at the local beaches, and how much to pay auto rickshaw drivers.
Overall, we feel that we were able to get the most out of our time spent in Varkala staying at Kaiya House with such a warm, friendly and helpful host, because it offered us more than the average tourist experience in Kerala.
We strongly recommend this excellent home stay.
