“Best place to stay at Varkala”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

In January 2011 we spent a couple of days at Palm Tree Heritage at Varkala (Kerala). Our stay was wonderful. This is the best place to stay at Varkala because you are merely 800 meters north of Varakala 's cliff far enough from the crowded tourist town of Varkala. As you are in a traditional fishing area every morning if you wake up early you can see traditional fishermen bring back there huge fishnet from the sea. Traditional Keralese Fishing boats wait fishing time on the beach. The place is fantastic and quiet if you want to have a rest. You can swim and play in the perfect waves of the warm arabian sea. The colours of sunset and surise are marvellous. From the beach at the distance you can see the beautiful Varkala's cliff wich is lighted up every evening. Babu the owner and all his staff are very friendly and professionnal. Every evening they put tables and chairs on the beach and open the restaurant. For the meal you choose on a table set on the beach the prawns, squids or fishes want to eat. The seafood is not spicy just cooked with garlic. You can see stars il the sky while while you drink a cocktail or a "kingfisher beer". The architecture of the hotel is a pure keralese architecture that makes the difference with other hotels and there is air conditioning in all tourist rooms. You can also pratice yoga if you ask Babu to call a yoga teacher. Most of them are not really Yogis but that's not important because if you are good yoga practioner you can practice yourself in the warm colors of the early morning (great experience) and if you are a beginner, yoga teachers are skilled enough for you. It is part of Palm Tree Heritage's Varkala. And if you want to visit Varkala's village, just walk south along the emerald arabian see, climb the stairs and jump in the crowded path wich goes along the cliff and shows spectacular views of the region. There, you can go shopping, drinking, dining (Cafe Italiano for exemple if you are fed up with spicy food and if you like colorful Keralese paintings) and even have an ayurvedic massage with various oils.
I thank Babu and his staff for this great moment of my life.

As disorganized travelers we were relying on a Tuk Tuk driver to show a few of the nice places in Varkala. He recommended that we don't stay at the main beach and took us to Palm Tree Heritage. Lucky for us they had just had a cancellation (yes, reservation is a must in the high season) and we grabbed the room. Set on a beautiful beach away from the buzz (but walking distance from all the shops, restaurants and people on the cliff top) the location is perfect. As Aussies we're pretty snobby about beaches but this one was lovely (the waves break hard pretty close to shore and there are some rips although it is still a nice swimming beach). The hotel itself is one of the nicest we've stayed in traveling in India. There aren't loads of middle-high range places and Palm Tree has done a good job catering to people who have money to spend on a nice place but are not looking for 5 star. The staff were lovely and the restaurant had good food and drinks. We would return in a flash!

I stayed at Palm Tree Heritage 2 nights with my friends in October 2011.We had a very nice stay there. They have only 5 rooms all air conditioned, they are very spacious and all with sea-view.You have a small beach in front of you and larger beaches just in the vicinities. This is a quiet area too.Rooms are very clean, staff very friendly and the manager took personal care of us.The hotel serves good food according to the order, especially fish specialties. The breakfast was also very good including a lot of fruit.

We had a very relaxing stay at the Palm Tree Heritage. We had originally booked in for two nights but liked it so much we came back later in our holiday for another couple of nights.

The resort is on the quieter beach in Varkala and is situated right on the sea - a perfect location. The beach is cleaned every day by resort staff, is less busy than others and doesnt have many sellers. Its used by local fishermen. You can watch them haul their nets in over breakfast.

Its one of the most expensive resorts in Varkala but well worth it for the idyllic setting and lovely rooms. If you are backpacking there are hotels available on the North cliff for a tenth of the price but if you want a higher standard of accomodation in a perfect setting then this is the place for you.

In our view what really makes the resort is the staff who are all so friendly and welcoming. They really go out of their way to help and Babu is a font of knowledge and advice. He is an ex travel agent so has a wealth of knowledge and contacts and is so friendly and genuine too. He helped us out with so many requests and his recommendations were always great.

We stayed in different rooms on each stay. Both were spacious, clean, had a comfy bed and amazing views. There are beach towels and mats suplied too which makes a trip to the beach much easier. Rooms are well decorated and all have a very opulent feel to them.

The restaurant provides excellent food although we did find that most places in Varkala have excellent food particulalry if you like fresh fish. The restaurant was slightly more expensive than others (ie those on North cliff where there is more competition). Service is often very slow but the generally relaxed atmosphere makes this irrelevant.

I would certainly recommend a stay in this wonderful resort. Thanks to all the staff for an amazing holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-3 dont directly face the sea but still have a beach view

We had a really nice stay at the Palm Tree Heritage. The location is absolutely stunning: directly on Odayam Beach, a quiet portion of ocean surrounded by palm trees, out of the busy tourist area on the cliff (which is just a 10 minutes walk away, if wanted). Our room was nice. The hotel manager, Babu, was really helpful and recommended a great place for ayurvedic massage. Trust him if you need any advice.

We travelled for a few weeks with varied levels of basic and Luxury accommodation, we stayed in two other places noted as "top picks" in lonely planet for this area and clearly Lonely Planet hadn't been here! I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone, at every price level. Babu has rooms in all ranges and once we moved into our room (in the annex) the room with the fabulous view right on the sea, we were not able to continue our travels.... We decided to stay for 5 days and now , reluctantly have to move on after 15!
It is probably better to do your traveling first and allow enough time for a relaxing beach stay here at the end, it is so easy to move in and, if you enjoy beach life in an unspoilt setting with every amenity within easy reach, the comfort you will experience will tempt you to stay forever.
Babu is hands on, always there, running his business in a very positive way. The staff are all really nice, friendly, helpful and good humored. The rooms are cleaned every day, and cleaned well.... The towels are changed every day, exceptional attention to detail in making a stay here a truly relaxing, comfortable experience, with no need to move just to get to a freshly cleaned room!
The area is great and we can only hope that with the pace of change this place can maintain its standards and the area remains as attractive and unspoilt as it is now for as long as possible. Come soon and you will be happy you did.....

We had a wonderful experience at the Palm Tree Heritage. We loved the location, the restaurant, room, and staff. The hotel is located on a more private stretch of beach surrounding by palm trees and ocean. It was the most beautiful place we stayed in Kerala and it had the best food we ate anywhere. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and you had your choice of south indian food or more western selections. The fresh fish at dinner with fragrant and delicate curry sauces were beyond delicious. The hotel is a quick walk to the cliff which is filled with shops and restaurants. It was nice beind just outside this busier area. We visited much of costal Kerala on our trip, and Varkala was hands down the nicest beach we went to. Most of all, we were so grateful to have met the owner Babu.

Babu, helped us arrange many parts of our trip. He is trustworthy and very knowledgeable about the area. If Babu tells you....this is the best houseboat, this is the best yoga, this is the best driver, you can rest assure it is! He has many connections throughout Kerala. You always hear stories about travelers in India being mis-led or taken advantage. Having someone like Babu who is kind and trustworthy is priceless. At one point during our travels we found ourselves a bit stranded and couldn't find a driver. Even though we were no longer staying at the palm tree heritage we called Babu and asked for help. With in an hour we had a driver with whom we traveled with for the remainder of our trip. If I could do the trip over again, I would have planned to stay at the Palm tree heritage for a minimum of 5-7nights, sat down with Babu, and let him help us plan the remainder of trip in South India.

I can't say enough positive things about this hotel.
Thanks to Babu and all the staff at the Palm Tree Heritage!
Best,
Anna & Minh
