“excellent hotel, food and staff!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2013

Best hotel we have stayed in since arriving in india 3 months ago! The staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much to ask! We arrived in the off season so the restuarant was closed. However they opened it up especially for us. The food was the best food we had eaten in india. The chef was amazing and asked us what we wanted to eat and would make it for us even if it wasnt on the menu. It is very very cheap! A curry is about 45 rps!! We had a incredible and huge thali for only 50 rps!

Our room was beautiful and very clean. It had a lovely balcony which was nice to sit out on in the mornings in the sun. We planned to stay 3 nights but extended it to 5 as it was so lovely.

Its location is about 5 to 10 min walk from the main strip of bars and restuarants but saves you about 1000 rps by staying here. Location was perfect for us as its quiet and nice walk up every day. Close to the beach and 10 min walk from the main black beach.

I would highly recommend this olace especially for budget travellers! We have stayed in awful places for 600 rps but this room was one of the nicest rooms we have stayed in so far for only 350 rps!

My wife and I were very impressed with Akshay. The host was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the location is perfect as they are close to the beach, but far enough from the noisier areas. The food was unbelievable for the first few days we stayed there, I mean it was probably the best Indian food I've ever eaten in my life as it oozed with flavour and richness. But, the chef changed halfway through our stay to the original chef's cousin who usually works on a cruise ship. This guy was not good, he was nice enough, but his cooking was lacking as he was stressed out and had no one helping him (a sous chef to cut veggies etc). The original chef needed some help too, but he was a very hard worker and clearly wanted to impress with his wonderful cooking, so he managed to pull through.

Lastly, the ayurvedic doctor was very pushy and only saw us as dollar signs. He did give me the best massage I've ever had in my life, but he was pressuring us to get more treatments which we didn't like. So maybe watch out for that..

Despite any of these issues akshay is still a brilliant place to stay at a cheap price (about $7 Australian per night). I'd recommend this place to anyone.

We stayed two nights at Akshay during our time at Varkala and for the price it provided excellent accommodation. Located towards the Indian-end of Varkala beach you are away from the pushiness of the hilltop shops and restaurants. The rooms are clean and spacious. However, the bathroom could do with improvement. The owner was fantastic and we adore the dog, Susie. On the last night they opened the restaurant attached, which provided amazing food for the price - far cheaper than the hilltop restaurants and provided authentic Keralan food, I wish this was open for both nights. A highly recommended place.

My wife and I made a last minute decision to spend a night in Varkala during our recent trip to India and after calling a couple other places we picked Akshay Beach Resort because Shibu the owner was so helpful on the phone, and that extended throughout our stay.

The room was clean and comfortable and check in and out was incredibly quick and easy. The actual hotel is about a two minute walk from the beach, and five minutes from the beautiful North Cliffs. I have absolutely nothing to complain about, it was a great value, and my wife and I can't wait to go back again to stay for longer.

Room Tip: We chose a larger A/C room for our one night stay and were not disappointed. The room included a ni...

We were welcomed in a nice way, the owner of the Hotel is extremely helpful. He did everything possible immediately to make us feel comfortable. The beach is not too far away. This is definitely a good choice for budget accomodation in Varkala.

the hotel does not look the most inviting at the first glance, but the crew/owner makes it very special. simple spacious spartan rooms with balcony (our was) over a couple of floors that climb the hill. ayruvedic centre and a vegetarian restaurant on the first floor tucked away from the street traffic. yoga exercise room on the top floor.

food! amazing to watch the cook preparing your simple and tasty food. even tea making was a ceremony.

100 metres to the beach (where religious rituals and fish trading takes place), but about 500m to the main clean sand beach. 200 metres to the ATM machine at Temple Junction.
