Well, honestly the food was not horrible (the milkshake, however, was quite squalid). The place has a somewhat rustic charm to it, no doubt. On one hand, the beautiful view is a recommendation in itself, on the other hand, the staff threatened to "cut" us.
Yes, I meant that quite literally. The waiter and the owner told us to get out or else we would incur the wrath of his blade. Perhaps a bit of context is necessary to convince the loyal, discerning customer that this is not a bluff.
In a nutshell, my chum and I, being Indian Malayalis by origin from London, did not seem to evoke the entrepreneurial spirit in the young waiter. The same waiter who had been reeling in all the "firangs" (Geijin) from the wayside leered at us with distaste as soon as we walked into the cafe. Later, after an extremely slow and especially shoddy service they brought us only one dish from the two we had ordered. The tardier milkshake, as mentioned earlier, was squalid. Charming.
Towards the middle of our meal, we had managed to strike an interesting conversation with two American expats- one a surf-photographer and the other, a teacher. We finally felt a tad at ease with the whole situation. We were about to go get dessert from a nearby Bakery (its called ABBA, very nice place). Didn't happen.
The waiter came toward us and aggressively asked us to get away from his customers. Ironically, he had our bill in his hands while saying it. Luckily, he took us to a corner before insulting us and asking us to leave. Unluckily, the seemingly unsober chap called his boss along and they started accusing us of "stealing" his customers. They said we best be getting out or else they would have their knives out. The waiter, now engorged with his power trip also added "get out by tomorrow morning". We left quite dumbfounded, confused, stupified, frustrated and prominently pissed off.
So, yea, I'm not going there again. Varkala is beautiful though.
