I have mixed feelings about this place

The pluses - Rafiq is a very welcoming host and the rooms clean and are in a beautiful location creating an incredibly relaxing atmosphere, you are well away from the worst of Varkala

The negative - the food is overpriced and of average quality - and as with other reviewers you only really find out the price at the end of your stay.

Overall I would recommend people to stay but would eat elsewhere (inc. breakfast). There are plenty of places nearby.

Of course it's a wonderful spot in India, clean, quite and authentic. Rafiq welcoms you warmly and makes you feel comfortable from the first second but please check your bill with precaution as some dishes might be evaluated 10 times more that the reality. It happened to me personally. One tiny fish was billed 10$, and the real value was only few cents ...maybe some foreigners agree too easely to pay the high price and are not aware of the real value of things. If you keep this in mind it will be paradise :-)

If you're looking for somewhere quiet, peaceful and close to the beach this is the place for you. The rooms back out onto rice fields, and the beach is just a minutes walk away.

The rooms are beautiful, simple and clean. Nice touches including incense and flowers at night.

The only downfall was the price of food which made eating here undesirable. They charged 150 rupees for toast which in town you can get for 40. What upset us most about this was not the price but the fact that there are no menus and we had to ask for the price. When we spoke to rafik, the owner, he said that people do not usually ask the price, which we feel is quite deceitful. When people receive their bill it must be a rude awakening.

We highly recommend this spot (it truly is beautiful) but eating here is not advisable.

Mektoub...Two musical syllabus...An exotic oriental word...A signifiant meaning: "Destiny", which reveals its secret and does hide It altogether

Mektoub...Not exactly a beach resort, neither a guest house...as Mektoub has no pretentions, no intentions whatsoever...

Mektoub is rather both a journey and a destination...a living entity offering you an amazing unique expérience...

Mektoub is an immersion both into Mother Nature and your inner one...A shantee invitation into a world of wonders, whippets and sounds of silence...

Mektoub is an enchanting suspended Éden Garden between sea, sky and Palm trees...

If Kerala is said to be God s own country, Mektoub is undoubtedly His Home.

Do make It yours :-)

We have stayed for a week at Mektoub beach resort at Odayam beach. We have had a beautiful week thanks to the owner Rafiq and his fantastic staff. The beach in front of the resort is very quiet compared to the cliff beach but anyway you have everything you need, some restaurants, umbrellas on the beach for rent and if you the cliff is just 15 minutes walking.

Ahhh... where to start. ...Rafiq, the owner, is one of the most beautiful people we have met. Kind, compassionate, humble, and full of life. A true pleasure to have met. Our room was great... spacious with two balconies overlooking palm trees and the beach. Quiet oasis from the chaos of india. Much gratitude... we will be back.

First things first: Rafiq, the owner is an absolutely lovely person, always greeted with a big, warm, welcoming smile. And the name - Mektoub (meaning fate) - says everything. It was true fate that we found this place in Varkala. After traveling in India for 5 weeks, this place was by far the best place we stayed in for a reasonable price. Just 3 km or a 15 min walk away from lively Varkala Beach, here you have the chance to relax and find yourself. The Bungalows built out of the same bricks the local fisherman use to build their own houses, the place fits perfectly in its surrounding. Having no boundaries around this little resort really gives you the feeling you are not trapped in a resort but part of the landscape. We would definitely recommend you stay here.
Thanks for everything Rafiq, Judith and Elliot
