Mektoub retreat is serene. Its a nice place for a relaxing holiday! It was a visual treat to watch the greenery and sea from the retreat!
Enjoyed the cool sea breeze and the never ceasing lullaby song of the waves!
Rafiq is so kind and friendly!
I would recommend Mektoub for those who wish to have a peaceful and relaxing stay!

Our train reached at an odd timing at Kollam railway station around 4am. it took us 45mins drive to reach parking space of meqtub. as we walked the pathways leading to Meqtub we were welcomed by the reflection of the dipping moon and the rhyme of the ocean waves. it should be less than two minutes walk but we may have paused longer..

what is this place ?
It’s a Sea facing retreat with backdrops of Paddy fields with earthy construction making more of a holistic living there are no luxury amenities like air conditions or tv, rather filled with sound of the ocean and peace from nature with an excellent passion driven host Rafique
there is a beautiful sandy beach right in front of the resort. 20 mins walk along the bay would reach to main cliff for shopping and exploring local happening at Varkala Cliff

this is a place ideal to jus layback do nothing, possibly catchup with an unfinished book, explore the inhouse library a collection of thoughts across the world, the beach invites all the time and mostly all yours, buy some fresh catch from local fishermen and request chef to have it fried and goes on...

Food is on request - walk in their kitchen and we can see how much they care. organic, tasty and lots of love

Service - i understand they have maintained minimal staff to keep the space private.

Accomodation - neat and clean, thoughtfully done ...loved it !

Room Tip: Earth Block 3 - room 9 is one of the best !! 180* panaromic view of the paddy fields, coconut groove...

Searching the internet for a place to stay in Varkala was tricky. We didn't want to stay up on North Cliff, as we didn't want to wake up to tourist noise every day!

Mektoub is easily the best place to stay. We booked 5 nights initially but ended up staying 10! It's just too easy to sit among the palm trees watching the rice paddy or sea. To book you need to email Rafiq directly mektoubexperience@gmail.com and for advanced bookings, complete an international bank transfer.

Mektoub is in easy walking distance of North Cliff (though we hired a bike from Rafiq so we could explore the coast) it's also very near deserted coast lines if you walk around the headland towards the south.

This place is well worth a visit.

After the long flight from Canada and a 3:30 am arrival it was a delight to find myself in a unique, simple guest room at Odayam beach. Having travelled extensively in Asia in the 70's I rediscovered here something of the ambiance and hospitality of those times that often seem long past. Set back from the beach in a lovely garden and attended to by our sweet young host Rafik and his accommodating staff I have overcome my jet lag while sipping tea, fresh juices and eating delicious Keralan food. I found nothing out of line when paying my bill and will recommend Maktoub to others

I stayed at Mektoub for about two weeks in December 2013. It is a pretty place with clean, airy rooms and is located within a 20-minute walk of the tourist cluster on Varkala Cliff.
I left in disgust, however. The billing was dishonest, with double charges casually presented and surprise charges for "services" never mentioned when I checked in.
I'm sorry to say this. It may be that Rafiq, the owner, is well intentioned, but he has allowed the dishonesty to continue, apparently for years.
I found it impossible to get a daily accounting, and found on my final bill charges for services I'd paid for a week earlier.
Stay there, I guess, but take nothing for granted.
I have visited probably 100 different hotels in India over the years. Mektoub is the one hotel I would not revisit.

When you arrive in your tastefully lit and decorated, spotless room and find it sprinkled with fresh jasmine and scented with incense, you know you've likely made a good choice. :) So did we, and instead of staying for a night or two, we spent four nights in this fantastically peaceful resort, situated in a coconut palm grove near a quiet, beautiful beach. Of course, it would not be the same without its charming, helpful and endearing owner - Rafiq, whose culinary skills are another good reason to stay at Mektoub :) I cannot recommend it more - try it, and you'll keep coming back (as I certainly intend to!).
