Very nice hotel, located in a great setting with a beautiful view. The beach can be accessed through a private path with a five minutes walk. The comfort is very good, staff is very attentive and friendly.

Room Tip: Seaview is quite nice.

We stayed at this resort for two nights. The package was comparatively cheaper than the other Taj resorts. Easy going friendly staff, amazing sea view from the lobby, beautiful landscaping and yummy food, I simply loved this place. My only request would be to alter the breakfast buffet. It was kinda repetitive and not much of options specially if you are going with kids. I loved their kappa meen curry combination, yummm...

And yeh not to forget, the way they amazed me on my birthday with super cute towel art! Indeed no one can touch Taj for their hospitality. Lovely place, I would love to visit again!

After 10 days traveling in northern India and Bhutan, we arrived at the Gateway. The hotel staff and everyone was so welcoming. We had arrived early, but they made every effort to get our room ready. The food is great; the pool is great. The general manager stops and talks with you. Highly recommend this jewel of a hotel.

Being stuck in the 20th century is not the only problem that the Taj Hotels suffers from. As a Gold Inner Circle member (the highest category) of their so called 'loyalty' program, it becomes clear that they really do not value their most loyal guests. Their whole attitude is about making money in every way possible. While no doubt the service and food levels at the Taj properties are generally very high, they do have black sheep in their fold, and this is one of them.

1. I had booked a room more than a month in advance. The day before I was to arrive I checked the rates again and was surprised to see that the rates had fallen by almost 20%. I asked for an adjustment, and it was blankly refused. This is normal practice in the hotel industry, but not for the Taj hotels. During our stay, the hotel had less than 10% occupancy, so no wonder they were keen to make as much money as they could at the expense of their Gold member.

2. The hotel was undergoing renovations, both inside and outside. Besides the noise The banging could be heard in the room), the grounds and the passages were unkempt and shabby with debris everywhere. See the pictures to get an idea.

3. I was given a 'renovated' room (Room 218), and there were leaking water stains on the wall above the bed. In addition, this 'renovated' room featured a shower area that was curtained, but that did not stop the water from flowing into the rest of the bathroom and making it all wet.

4. The only restaurant was a perfect example of a headless ship. One evening Chef Bijoy was around and he made sure that everything was under control. However in his absence (every other time), the place was clueless about service, cooking, quality. This was a rare aberration in the wonderful dining legacy that the Taj hotels typically have. Even the south Indian fare for breakfast was disappointing. One evening, it took an hour and 15 minutes from the time I sat down for my order to arrive.

The rooms are smallish, but with a large bay window, it gives the appearance of being more spacious. The shower area has a huge glass front that gives you a view right through the room into the sea outside. This was quite stunning.

However, there was no one management available during the stay. A front office clerk and an accountant were doing double duty.

And lastly, the Taj Hotels continue to be stuck in the 20th century mode with their outdated thinking of internet as a luxury and therefore something to make money from like the mini bar. I am surprised they have not found a way to charge for electricity and water as well. Shame on the Taj Hotels for this, and unless they change this policy, I will be boycotting all Taj hotels, and urge you to do the same.

Stayed at Gateway in Varkala for two nights as the final send off for the family trip to Kerala in oct/nov 2013. My, husband, two children aged 9 and 14 and my mother had a great time at Gateway, the pool was well kept and the kids stayed in it for hours on end.
The breakfast buffet is lovely, but I recommend you go elsewhere for dinner though.
However - what absolutely made us love staying here was the towel art the room keeping staff surprised us with - don't know if this is solely for rooms with kids in them, but no matter what, it was hilarious!
We had a late flight, and had no trouble getting the room after ordinary check out time - which also was a great service to us!

Room Tip: We had garden facing rooms, which suited us just fine! Close to the pool area, and the kids could co...

Best hotel option in varkala, this one, though it's not without a few issues. The rooms are quite nice and clean, redone in modern colors and with cool showers. We had a nice sea view room but ended up lying awake as an air conditioner made an ungodly racket, like a super loud toilet perpetually flushing. It took them two days to deal with the issue and then they moved us into a room with lots of water damage on the walls. Management was just a bit off its game, though they did give is a discount after my husband caused a fuss; would have been better if it had been offered, not under duress... Anyway the pool is great and warm and the staff generally really sweet. Lots of kids were there, having a blast. You can walk to the cliffside or take a taxi for under a dollar. Views of Palm trees and ocean are great. It's hard to be stressed in this beach town. We'd go again though if in varkala.

This hotel is the perfect example of how good hospitality and willingness of the staff to serve and make the stay of their guests comfortable can really overcome some of the minor negative points of the property.

The hotel does not have a private beach in fact the beach is 7-10 wins walk from the hotel, it was going under renovation but still it made our stay the best part of our trip to Kerala. I would like to highlight a couple of examples:

- We found some impurities in a glass of our regular water in their restaurant, so we were served mineral water through out our stay without asking.

- The chef would prepare something special for us for dinner as we were north indian vegetarians and did not like the dinner spread. Thank you chef!

- House keeping responded in 2-5 mins. It was like put down the phone and the door bell rings. Very prompt.

- The recently renovated hotel rooms are excellent with lots of space and modern furnishing.

- The pool area was also very neatly maintained with a pool bar always ready to serve you.

Choose this hotel if you want to relax and unwind. Just check in here and let the hotel staff take care of you.

Room Tip: Choose the recently renovated sea view rooms. Room 207 and 208 have the best sea view and have a sma...
