A beautiful property of Taj with fantastic service. We had gone to this hotel with a group of 30 (7 families). We had a great time here. The view of the sea is beautiful from the lobby.

We had our room in a floor below the lobby. All rooms in this level have a private balcony that then leads to the swimming pool. The room, as expected, was spic and span with the view spectacular. The only disadvantage was that they did not have a lift to go down. We had a very small baby and it used to be a task to carry the pram and the baby up and down the stairs. Of course, the staff was very courteous and helpful.

The resort only had 1 restaurant. This was a little surprising as even that could not accommodate all the guests. Lunch and dinners used to get a little crowded. However, they had a nice open patio where we could take our buffet plates and sit under the sun/moon depending which meal you are eating.

The swimming pool was great and the kids really enjoyed. There is a small path that leads us to the beach (this property is on a little hillock - though it has a sea view, it is not on the sea).

Overall, a great experience.

My mum and I have just returned from staying at the Gatway hotel. The staff were very helpful, however the hotel itself leaves a lot to be desired. Is probably 3* by UK standards. Rooms were relatively clean, however the 1st room (garden view) we were put in overlooked the work that was being done (not a good view) and had a very stale smell. We were moved to a sea view room which had a better view and didn't smell so bad. The tennis court is very badly needed repaired - holes around outer court and the net is badly torn at the top- they were also trying to charge us for new balls as they didn't have any old balls we could borrow! The gym is a joke - basically a cupboard with a treadmill - however we didn't go there to use the gym! The hotel itself is in a good location, 5 mins walk to the beach. The pool is ok but they don't really promote the fact that you can order drinks by the pool. There is no other bar in the hotel (but then this is India). In general the hotel is very tired and needs painted, etc. to upgrade itself as the staff are very good.

I traveled to Varkala a beautiful town with my mom. She was unwell as she had pulled her leg muscle and could not walk. I was amazed with the help I got from the hotel to ensure that she gets to enjoy her stay without having to travel. EXCELLENT STAFF. Property is good. Varkala is a pretty chill out destination.

The Gateway is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Cochin, and is located next to the sea, though there is no beach and it isn't a resort; just a guarded gate leading to a public path along the harbour edge, which is can smell in places, from sewage outfalls. So location is not really a good point. However, the hotel itself is good, with spacious and comfortable rooms, albeit not so well insulated for sound as connecting room doors are only single so we could hear TV from both sides at night.

The food is very good, and service is excellent. The only niggles are that the gymn is particularly poor, if that is of concern to you, the pool is a bit uninspiring and shaded, and the food handling could be better. We frequently saw bar crisps being bare handedly placed into bowls, and at the breakfast bar the omelette chef used his bare hands to pick up tomatoes for grilling on a hot plate. Given the excellent standards in other areas, this is surprising, particularly as food hygiene is so critical in India. This certainly contributed to a bout of illness I had on the last night, having eaten all meals in the hotel the day before.

So although I would recommend the Gateway, there really isn’t much to do in the vicinity, and you have to keep an eye on the food handling and avoid the higher risk foods such as salads, and other cold items, if you are a foreigner with no natural resistance to the local bugs.

This is one the best properties which I have come across.
The hospitality was really good and being an off season the rates will a steal.
The food was also very good.
Apart from this the number of activities that they have is really good - Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Table Tennis, Carrom, Swimming pool, other board games.
They also have some kind of show for the evening which is worth watching.
A must visit for everyone.

I meant to write a small review of this hotel for a long time (almost a year!) as this is thanks to the comment I read on this website I selected that hotel in the first place.
As stated before, it is important not to expect to find a 5 star hotel even if it claims to be one. It should be an overall 3 star hotel. With that in mind, you will not be disapointed.
I have travelled a few times in India and unless you go to very expensive hotel you are never sure of what you will get and this is what selecting this hotel was all about, some piece of mind.

The rooms are spacious and clean. I started with a standard room and then requested a suit as one became available. The suits are just 2 standard rooms put together, one acts as a salon/diner room and the other one as your bedroom.

What I diskled about this hotel:
- Not much really
- The restaurant hasn't got much selection
- There isn't really a bar in the hotel, you do get a pool bar but this closes around 10pm (unless maybe there are still people swimming?)

What I liked about it:
- It is quiet
- It is close to the beach, but you still get this sense of privacy! (5 to 10 minutes walk)
- Rooms are clean, bed comfortable, nice bathroom
- Very good service by the pool with "Matthew" always smiling!
- The pool size is good

They do offer some backwater and elephant tours...
Backwater: interesting, but they do not take you "far enough" inland, you seem to only being taken around into the large lagoon and you see only the start of the backwaters.
Maybe you can ask for a different tour... still worth it though! especially when the sun goes down!!!

Elephant tour:
That was more of a disapointment... it was nice to be taken around on a huge elephant... but all you do is being "toured" on a road... I would have preferred to go into a jungle... and it lasts about 10 minutes...
not really worth it!

The fitness center is... well a joke... a tiny room boilling hot with 2 or 3 weigths and a running machine... but that's not really why I chose that resort so I was OK (you can always run on the beach!)

If you are getting maried, it is your anniversary, etc... and tell them, they will organise a cake for you (very nice!)

They do have broadband internet, it works... but you can get disconnected often... I managed to run skype no problem though!

To summerize, the hotel does indeed feel a bit rundown, but it is clean and you get a very good service. Varkala is a beautiful place and you have plenty of restaurant and bars at about 5 minutes drive (in a local auto/taxi for about 50 ruppees).

I highly recommend it for a nice romantic getaway, while still being close enough to night life!

TAJ VARKALA :

the serene and lovely beach resort is wonderfull and can be reached from tiruvanathapuram airport by road and is a grat place to take a break from the city life. here the reaort is princely , with excellant gourmet offer, lovely pool and facing the varkala beach. the quiet natural surroundings makes this place very nice and relaxes the mind and Kerala gods own country can be experienced at this lovely resort. the facilities are excellant , the bar is very good. the conference facility is also good. the rooms are spacy, well furnished and are of international standards . the ambience reflects taj culture and hospitality and is to be experienced atleast once in a life time. so dont miss it, enjoy cool nature , take walk through the garden to the beach , enjoy swimming and the lovely dishes offered at the restaaurant.

enjoy and have a great times. pay visit to the local temple and the beach has traditional rituals taking place in the mornings.

Thank BALU7
