“tropical elegance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2010

This winter I returned for my second stay at Villa Jacaranda, and it was even better than my first visit. The place is so elegant, decorated in a style that is subtle and never ostentatious. Ajay, the owner, employed local craftsmen and tailors to attend to every detail of the architecture and decor. The whole place is spotless, and the staff friendly but never intrusive. And Ajay is true gentleman, gracious and committed to fine Indian hospitality.

The room on the top floor has a lovely patio, and a view across palm trees to the sea. The beach is a quick walk down the road and down a cliff. There are actually no places RIGHT on the beach, as the area is built on a cliff. This (south) end of Varkala is much quieter than the other end. Of course, it IS India, so you will hear the occasional autorickshaw and motorcycls down the road...but I fell asleep listening to the wind in the trees and awoke to tropical birdsong. On this trip I never even made it up to the north end of the cliff at all.
I took all my meals in my room and wandered out only to play in the waves.

One thing to note, Varkala is not a swimming beach, so best to just wade in the water. One cranky guest, unfortunately also from my city of San Francisco, complained about having to walk ages to the beach with the lifeguard. Are you really going to entrust your life to a Varkala lifeguard?? Just bob in the water on the private beach down the cliff and forget the lifeguard.

It is not the cheapest place you'll find, that is for sure, but you definitely get what you pay for...a clean, relaxed, elegant stay. You could haggle for something cheaper and gaudier, but why bother? Once you travel around India a bit more you will be clamoring to return here! It is my favorite place in Kerala.

What do we love here?
- Waking to see the Arabian sea beyond our toes while between crisp white cotton sheets...
- Fresh jasmine silently delivered to our veranda each evening...
- Peacefulness
- Mynah, kites, kingfishers, and other unknown birds in bright colours visiting our deck or swooping by...
- Ajay, - his help, personality, and quotable phrases...
- The staff - all kind, attentive, and collectively delivering hushed exchanges perfectly suitable for undisturbed peace...
- Romantic! Everything is visually sumptuous and languid...
- Fabulously civilized touches; linens, butter, tea, china, giant shower, artful flowers, and the fan (It was hot!)...
- Breakfasts on the veranda...
**Allow Ajay to commandeer your travel arrangements. He deftly arranges everything and will prevent you from needing to sort all the complexities of India.**
We want to come back very much!

I stayed here with my husband for his 30th Birthday. We'd done some travelling round India beforehand and this was the ideal place to stop and catch our breath!

We payed the extra for room 4 and it was stunning! The view of palm tree's and the sea was awesome and the sunset each night breathtaking!! The attention to detail was excellent with flowers and candles everywhere which couldn't help but make you smile. The staff were great and helped you at every opportunity.

It was out of the main line of hotels and restaurants but we liked this as it meant that we got a little walk evey night and yet could sleep in the peace and quiet. Would certainly recommend it!

My wife and I stayed at Villa Jacaranda for a week during our stay in Varkala and can honestly say that we were not disapointed. Whether it be taking breakfast on the roof top amongst the fantastic wildlife in the coconut trees or simply relaxing in the excellent rooms themselves, every detail well thought of, you will not be dissapointed.
Ajay and his staff cater for their guests to a high standard advising us of good local places of interest, backwater trips, local temples, Golden isle or simply arranging an appropriate time you require breakfast.
The comments noted in another review concerning the lack of hot water are completely unfounded as Ajay advised the staff will turn on the back up system as long as they are informed." Maybe taking time to listen would have helped that person"
The fans in the room are more than adequate in controlling the temperature required and the attention to detail throughout the Villa cannot go unoticed. Our room was cleaned daily, to a spotless standard, with fresh flowers placed everday.
The location of the Villa is excellent, a short 5 minute walk takes you to to the fantastic beach or 2 minutes further to the more populated North Cliff. Varkala village is a short tut tut ride away and well worth a visit to get a real feel of Varkala.
Quite simply Villa Jacaranda caters for all your needs and Ajay will not let you down. Thanks Ajay !

We spent a couple of nights here at the end of our two month tour of India and it was just what we needed. Spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished, spacious room, with wonderful shower and balcony with sea views. It was easily one of the nicest places we stayed and we wouldn't hesitate to go back.

One change since the original post is that they were no longer able to offer evening meals. The breakfasts however are great - served on your balcony - and it's only a short walk to the nearest restaurants.

We stayed at Villa Jacaranda over the christmas period for a few nights, first impressions: What a lovely Guesthouse.

We had room four. The room was charming, really clean and airy, it was nice to eat breakfast on the patio overlooking the garden, so quiet and peaceful.

Ajay has a wonderful place and brilliant staff. If anyone is planning to visit
Varkala, l suggest you try and stay here first.

We have just returned from a fabulous break at the Villa Jacaranda.
The villa itself is a delight, immaculately clean and full of small surprises, daily fresh flowers and lovely linen for example. Breakfast is wonderful with a good choice. The private verandah areas for the individual rooms are just that, secluded and peaceful, overlooking the beautiful gardens and through the palm trees to the sea.
The location is great, a genuine 5 minute walk to the quieter South Beach with a number of beachside restaurants. A further 5 – 10 mins walk takes you to the busier North Cliff area and more variety. A short auto rickshaw ride will get you into Varkala town for browsing or shopping for fabrics, gifts etc.
The host Ajay is charming and goes out of his way to ensure your stay is peaceful and relaxing (calmly resolving my own mistake with dates of a houseboat booking – highly recommended trip by the way, Ajay has the contact). All the staff are equally mindful of your experience, discreet but on hand should you need anything.
I cannot recommend this villa highly enough. It really is a lovely experience.
I have noted some less than positive reviews recently which are puzzling and while of course individual tastes are just that some of the information is plainly misleading, the location and hot water for example – we had no problems with either. I have suspicions about the reviewers motives and have reported this Trip Advisor.
