“Pleasant and welcoming stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014 via mobile

We really enjoyed our stay here, the staff are very polite and informative and the location is great. We got our ground floor room at a off season price, and thought breakfast, which was outside on chairs and tables, was fine. Powdered milk and sachet coffee are perhaps not for everyone, but we're not fussy and thought the variety of South Indian additions to the continental breakfast options were lovely. Breakfast included in the price. The rooms were perfectly clean and were tidied/new sheets and towels regularly, plus we had lots of laundry done for a really reasonable rate. TV was at a bad angle but other than that no complaints. Would definitely recommend. Thanks to the staff who were very pleasant and welcoming, they'd do anything to make your stay as good as they can.

The staff was very helpful. Breakfast came with the package and was good. Rooms were clean. There was a balcony with a good view of the ocean and beach. These are the pluses.

But, this hotel had a few minuses too. The rooms were dark (lighting was inadequate). There were small gaps in the windows (eventhough the room had an a/c) and it would let the cold air out and mosquitoes in. We had them covered with newspaper. A hotel should not be like that. Hope these problems would be taken care of by the management so that it can be a really good hotel. Wi-fi was very weak inside rooms.

Room Tip: We were 2 couples and had two rooms. Both rooms had same problems. The management has to mosquito-p...

Arrived at guest house to helpful welcome by the desk clerk, who by the way was excellent throughout our stay. He was helpful and accommodating at all times, giving helpful advice on the area.the bathroom was excellent - well lit and clean.
The big let down was the dining area which was more like and open air hall - no ambience whatsoever..The breakfast consisted of a dry omelette and hot water in flasks, complimented by powdered milk and instant coffee.
The guest house had excellent wifi, possessing four wifi points. Our room had a balcony which had views to the ocean .
Overall, I felt at 4000rps a night , thus was not very good value.

Room Tip: If you afford it the front rooms were better.

Had booked two rooms for 3 nights in November 2013 for me and my family, of husband, two children aged 9 and 14, as well as my mother. We arrived in the evening, and the house itself is lovely, however, the inside of the rooms didn't match this.

Small rooms, lacking sea view, and with a mildewy smell in the air. Not much of a breakfast, served to the rooms - we had them on the veranda, where there was no table, so a bit primitive. We only stayed for a night, and then got another hotel in the morning, and the staff were very friendly in cutting short our stay. Wanting to know why, and asking what they could do to make our stay more pleasant. So - their desire to make us comfortable was great, and for that they get a gold star!

So - all in all, we just had too high expectations. Lower them and you'll be fine. :-)

Room Tip: Perhaps the upstairs rooms are larger and actually sport the sew view? The ground floor ones (standa...

We stayed for two nights in Omsam Guest House and had a room on the first floor from where we had a glimpse of the sea.

The guest house is located on the quieter South beach which is more frequented by Indian tourists rather than Westerners. The guest house itself is very beautiful with the guest rooms primarily being constructed out of wood with loads of carvings. There was a nice little terrace from which we enjoyed the breakfast which was not the best we had in India but ok overall. The staff is very helpful and happy to assist with any query and Deepu, the accommodation manager even walked with us to find the local Motorcycle rental which is only 5min away.

The local amenities are very good and of better value than on the North beach, e.g. the Theeram Restaurant offered excellent Keralan food at slightly lower prices than its equivalents on the North side.

If you enjoy staying away from the main Western crowd and like a quite and comfortable place than this is a good choice. Don't go for the cheapest rooms on the ground floor however as they feel more of a chamber and you have no view whatsoever.

Room Tip: Don't go for the standard rooms on the ground floor.

We stayed for 2 nights during the monsoon season. We had the ground floor room which I guess is the smallest room. The building itself is very nice and beautifully crafted. The staf tries to make you feel very comfortable, they are indeed very friendly (although I sometime had the feeling to be living in a episode of 'fawlty towers'). Maybe it was that our room did not have an outside space so we had breakfast on 2 chairs outside the room (a little table would have been handy). Also the free wifi did not reach our room, not so handy. All in all it was a pleasant stay, not more not less.

After backpacking our way around India we decided to splash out on our last couple of nights and stay in the beautiful Om Sam guest home.

Our room was absolutely beautiful, with amazing wooden ceilings. There was absolutely nothing that I could fault with the room at all. We also had a nice spacious balcony which I believe was shared with the room next door, but we never really heard or saw anyone else.

Varkala itself wasn't really our cup of tea, but the staff at Om Sam helped us hire a scooter and gave us some great hints and tips of places to go outside of the touristy area which we loved. They were also very helpful in arranging transport to the airport for us, we were very sad to leave!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
OmSam Guest Home is a dream project of three medical doctors, Dr. K.K. Krishnamma, Dr. V. Lohi Das and Dr. Thulika Rohan – to offer tourists the elusive, intangible feel of how native Malayalis lived in their traditional homes. Since Om Sam Guest Home is perched almost at the crest of South Cliff, all rooms, even those in the ground floor, offer panoramic views of the sea and the sunset. Guests can sun-bath on the balconies leading out from every room, or simply indulge themselves by soaking in the view of the sea. Mana with Mansard Roof Traditional homes in Kerala used to have one or two small raised steps at the entrance to the compound, with accompanying overhead covering, which would offer protection from the sun as well as rain. The native Malayalam language word for step is padi, and the word for overhead structure is pura. Padippura therefore can best be translated as step(s) with overhead covering. The padippura at Om Sam Guest Home is one of its distinctive characteristics. Traditional families of Kerala used abundant wood and wood materials for making their homes. Keeping this in mind, wood of all kinds has been sourced from all parts of Kerala, especially from rich orthodox homes and palaces; wood fresh-cut from the forest has been shunned : this was primarily to capture the evanescent spirit of the Malayali home. ... more   less
