We'd arrived at Varkala without definite plans and stayed a night at
Bamboo House ( see separate review) which was fine, but we were
hoping for a sea view room.
We walked along the cliff towards Black Beach and tried the two large
resorts at the far end- one was Black Beach Resort, can't remember the
other , but both were full.
We happened upon Dream Shore by chance. Its at the far end of the
cliff, as it drops down to Black Beach. There are 4 whicker and thatch
cottages- 3 with a side view to the sea and one facing directly out
across the garden to the clifftop path and the sea beyond.Behind there
is the main hotel with rooms with shared balcony facing across the
gardens to the sea.
When we first passed, all the cottages seemed occupied but having
drawn a blank elsewhere we decided to check on the way back and fell
lucky. The detached cottage facing directly to the sea had just been
vacated so we snapped it up for 2 nights.
It was small, basic but clean enough with a fan and A/C. It had a
balcony to the front from which you could see and hear the crashing
waves ( all the beaches in Varkala are too rough for swimming). The bathroom was
a decent size and seemed to have a water heating contraption, but we
never managed to get that working so it was cold showers as usual! The
floor was tiled but some of the tiles had cracked, resulting in
puddles of water appearing on the balcony. We pointed this out to the
manager and he returned in 5 minutes with a bucket of cement to carry
out some instant repairs. One small negative was that there was no
mosquito net so we had to keep the windows closed at night, though
they did provide a plug in insecticide.
The hotel is at the quieter end of the cliff and they have their own
restaurant with nice shady terrace overlooking the sea which serves a
large range of dishes. Its about a 10 minute walk to the helipad area
of the cliff and 15 minutes to the beach,
None of the hotels in Varkala are right on the beach and of those on
the cliff, surprisingly few have ocean view rooms. Dream Shore Beach is
one of the few that do and at 2000 rupees per night (less with no A/C)
I class it as a bargain if you can get a cottage, even better if you
get the detached one we had.
I don't believe they have a website -their email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
