We spent our first day of the South Kerala trip here, which proved to be the best moments of the trip. This resort has a perfect location, very courteous and helpful staff, a very good beachside restaurant and all that come for a nominal price…what else you need on a leisure trip? The High End apartment suite that I opted was clean and spacious and had a good sitting area. The restaurant serves good food except that they don’t have much variety in South Indian cuisine like Dosa, Idly etc. The biggest highlight is the staff and service. The staff greets you every time you walk across. I booked the room just one day before arrival on phone without paying any advance. The manager didn’t even ask me to pay advance when I checked in….It is rare to see such a courteousness anywhere else in India.
I had a very bad experience at the other resort in Kovalam where I stayed the next day….and so I wished that I should have stayed here only for the whole trip.

Room Tip: High End apartment suites are good

The Varkala Marine Palace is right on the beach. The staff takes care to make sure that guests have a relaxing and fun visit. It's obvious they enjoy their work. The hotel is clean and decorated tastefully. Wake up to the sound of waves, have a delicious breakfast at the hotel restaurant, and go for a walk on the beach. If you want to explore Kerala, they'll help you plan your activities. It's lovely.

Room Tip: If you want to be on the beach side, ask. If you want privacy, tell them that.

Varkala Marine Palace really does have it all. A perfect location (literally walk down 40 steps onto the beach), a really unspoilt and low density accommodation area that is great for relaxing and is quite private, spotlessly clean and spacious accommodation and simply great attention to detail that makes a special holiday. The restaurant is good too - excellent for fresh fish.
As Varkala has become increasingly commercialised it is refreshing to find somewhere that has not lost sight of the values that made Varkala desirable in the first place. Unconditionally recommended.
Bhasker (who runs the place) is always eager to please and will do anything to make your stay special.

After travelling around India in budget guest houses for 3 weeks we decided to pay more and stay somewhere nice during our time in Varkala as it was our anniversary. We stayed for 3 nights in one of the suites and paid 7500Rs in total (about £33 a night). I think this is the low season price and it costs more in high season.

Marine Palace is the most welcoming, relaxing place to stay in Varkala. It is literally a stone's throw from the beach (the majority of hotels in varkala are situated along the cliff top so are much further from the beach). The manager is very friendly and helped us with anything we needed.

The room itself was lovely, upstairs with a balcony and a view out to the sea. There was a hammock and a swinging chair and 2 normal sitting chairs with a table outside on the decking. Inside was a big double bed and one single bed with mosquito nets, wardrobe, loads of cupboards, a big clean bathroom and a small room with a sink, some tea making facilities and a mini fridge. The room was cleaned each day and new towels/sheets provided when needed.

The resort is beautiful, especially in the evenings when they come around to the rooms and light candles and incense sticks for you. The restaurant does excellent food (I recommend the tandoori fish but remember to haggle to get a good price!) The food off the menu is normal price for Varkala (restaurant food in Varkala is more expensive than elsewhere in India). The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere in the evenings, quiet and serene in candlelight with the sound of sea....very romantic!

On our last day in Varkala we had a train at 02.30am. When we spoke to the manager he allowed us a late check out at 4pm that day so we could enjoy the day on the beach then come back to shower before checking out. As our train was in the middle of the night he gave us a room to get some sleep in for a couple of hours before we had to leave - all at no extra cost. We were dreading having to wait up for the train so it was such a nice surprise when he offered us a room. When it was time to leave in the middle of the night he was there waiting for us with our bags to say goodbye and gave us a small leaving gift too.

It was all the small unexpected touches at Marine Palace Varkala that made our stay here so special. If you can afford to spend a bit more for a day or two you definitely won't regret it!

This place is great. The hotel is located right on the beach. This means its about a five minute walk to all the restaurants on the cliff top... but in my opinion its much nicer to stay in this beautiful, quiet location, and then make the short walk to the restaurants in the evening. The rooms are very spacious and ours had a great balcony, which had ample seating, including a hammock. The hotel makes you feel welcome right from the start, and there are loads of small touches that make this place unforgettable, such as the man who comes round in the evening and lights incense outside of your room. Though some things about the hotel are just rough around the edges enough to make you remember you are in India, the bedding is beautifully crisp white and the rooms are spotlessly clean and full of character. We had no problems with hot water and the fan kept us very cool. We were blown away by the restaurant, which we felt was the best in town. We found there was no better place to be than on the restaurant balcony having gin and tonics and masala poppadums in the evening. The food is really well priced and everything we had was delicious. The staff were all very friendly, which added to the chilled out vibe at the this place. I would highly recommend Marine Palace.

The entire team is extremely dedicated. Baku, the manager is extremely helpful and available for any request/questions. The restaurant facing the sea serves delicious indian food and fresh fish at night. The tropical garden is very well maintained. The service of both the hotel and restaurant is efficient and most of all very friendly. The human size of this establishment and the quality of the team makes a perfect place to relax, unwind and contemplate. Had a brilliant stay

We stayed here in April 2011. We were scared by the fact that the rooms don´t have A/C but must say that didn´t need it! Kerala is hot in April but these cottages are literally located in the beach, have several windows to make some cross-ventilation together with the fans. The cottages are the authentic Kerala-style wooden ones, so great. The staff is really nice and helpful. The arabic ocean shore is 20 meters away. Excellent restaurant with fresh fish of the day. Most charming hotel in Kerala!
