“Very special place and people”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2013

My husband and I stayed here the end of July. We wanted to see the monsoon rains and go to Varkala when it was quiet and off season. We were not disappointed, the rains were incredible and Marine Palace was the perfect place to relax on the lovely wooden balconies watching the rain come down drinking a never ending supply of Chi tea! 'Babo' the owner as he is affectionately know is a great unassuming host who nothing is too much trouble for. The food at the hotel was the best we had during our stay, the highlight was when the local fishermen caught an enormous barracuda and the chefs cooked it traditional style in a banana leaf, amazing! We asked the chefs to teach us a couple of recipes which was well worth it as we've been able to recreate the lovely food at home. We stayed for two weeks which is apparently unusual as people tend to move around, but I feel you will miss so much culture and can't appreciate the magical holy beach and what it means to the Keralan people by just stopping for a day.
To sum up, Varkala is a very special place and if you are planning to visit, Marine Palace is by far the most stunning, traditional, clean, friendly place you could chose - we would also recommend the monsoon season for a real experience, we will be going back for sure!

This is our first destination on our South India trip and What a start ... Amazed by the location and food. The only Hotel right on the Beach. You need to take the left road from the Varkala Helipad to reach the hotel. The right side of the Helipad is the Cliff where you get restaurants, shops and hotels but that is busy area. You can take nice evening stroll on the cliff. We stayed in the Kerala Style Wooden Cottage, Sea facing room. Excellent Staffs, very cordial behavior. Food was good specially the fish preparations. We tried pasta but it didn't come out well. We visited Janardhan Swamy Temple in the evening when the entire temple was lit by Diyas (Oil lamp), it is fabulous. We had experienced Backwater ride at Munroo Island. Bhaskar (the owner) is an excellent person, he had arranged for the trip to Munroo as well as he arranges the pick and drop facility from/to station / airport. The only disappointment was that we could not enjoy playing at the the beach and Sea since the Beach Guards/Police were super Cautious. However you can enjoy the sea early in the morning when no guards are at sight.

Room Tip: Kerala Style Wooden Cottage has good view of the Sea and Rooms on the Left side of the Reception has...

Best place to eat and chill on varkala beach, great view and affordable prices. They have hello to the queen dessert which we were looking for last weeks. I would higly recommend crabs in karala masala, prawns noodles and all fresh sea food they have

After being travelling in India for more than a month, getting to this place was really reaching the paradise. The location of the hotel is perfect, in front of the holy waters of the Papanasam beach, out track of the busy cliff but whithin easy reach to all the restaurants, shops and spas you can find in Varkala. The room are very spacious, clean and tidy with every little detail for making comfortable your stay. The terrace for relaxing, reading or just eating is great while listening to the sound of the weaves. The staff of the hotel and the restaurant is very friendly and helpful, always trying to make you feel as at home and the food is excellent, very good value. Its a pity that it was monsoon time. Hope to come back soon at season time to enjoy the beach and the sunset in this great location. Thank you Babu, Vishnu, ...for this lovely time in Varkala. I absolutely recommend this place.

Had a great time staying for a few days here. Amazing location, right on the beach. Lovely staff who arranged everything we needed (scooter hire, train station transport etc).

The rooms are big and well furnished. Though the bathrooms could probably do with a little upgrade.

The restaurant here has an amazing location - perfect for sunset. The big downside is that food can take a very very long time to come. The food itself is pretty good - though nothing sensational.

We only intended to stay here for a couple of night maximum, but we ended up staying for a week! Very comfortable rooms within a stones throw of the beach. Idyllic. The staff were very friendly and hospitable. The value for money was 1st rate - would absolutely recommend.

The beach is very close by so it was nice to just go for a swim with very little walk. The rooms are also very nice and we enjoyed very much and the people so friendly.

Very nice food also, good breakfast, with some nice vegetarian options.
