“Unforgettable camel safari in Jaisalmer”
Reviewed 17 January 2013

My son and I arrived at the Roop Mahal Hotel in mid-December. We had come to Jaisalmer to take a camel safari into the Thar Desert. We didn't want to go to the Sam sand dunes or areas that had already been despoiled by tourists. Rather, we wanted to go off the beaten track, to a place where we would see no signs of civilization. We were not sanguine about the possibilities until we met Chandra, the owner of Roop Mahal. He told us that his safaris did exactly that: avoided the over-touristed areas in favor of a pristine stretch of sand dunes that would require us to take at least a three-day, two night safari. He said his camp there had cots to enable us to sleep more comfortably than on the ground, and assured us that three days would not be too long for camel newbies such as ourselves.
The safari was absolutely wonderful! It took us the whole of the first day to get used to riding the camels, and we didn't get as far out into the desert as we would have liked, since we had opted to use the cots that night. So the next day, Sonny, our camel-man, took us a lot farther into the dunes, far enough to have a complete 360 degree view of the desert without any signs of human habitation. Chandra had warned us not to expect sand dunes like those in "Lawrence of Arabia", but they were big enough for us. We saw a number of deer and even several foxes. But mostly we just enjoyed the solitude of those quiet, wide-open spaces and the slow, rolling gait of the camels.
That second night the wind started to blow fairly hard, and Sonny dug a large hole in the sand about 15 inches deep and wide enough for two sleeping bags. He lined these with camel blankets so the wind wouldn't blow sand on us, and that's where my son and I slept that night. We were much warmer that night, either because the wind was bringing in warmer air from the south, or because we didn't have cold air blowing under us as we had when we slept on the cots.
I highly recommend the Roop Mahal camel safaris. Our safari was something that neither my son nor I will ever forget. Sonny, the camel-man, spoke perfect English, knew the desert like the back of his hand, and came up with delicious (vegetarian) meals three times every day. We packed in everything that we needed in the way of food, water, cooking utensils, sleeping bags, etc., and took every single thing out again, leaving no trace in the desert. If that is the type of experience you are after, you absolutely can do no better than arranging a safari with Chandra. I've read on this site that his safaris may be a bit more expensive than others. All I can say is, you get what you pay for. To go into the desert and not see another tourist for three days is priceless, in my book.
A word about Roop Mahal: I can also unequivocably endorse the hotel. The rooms are large and there is 24 hour hot water. I found the staff to be courteous, helpful and professional. I especially enjoyed the roof-top restaurant. I never got the name of the cook, but he turned out some of the best meals I have ever had in India. Try his Malai Kufta. Out of this world!
A word of advice: in December the Thar Desert is hot in the daytime and cold at night. I had brought only black Levis which were fine at night but far too hot during the day. Bring layers so you can adjust your clothing to the changing temperatures.

Room Tip: The room with the sunset view is the nicest and costs just a tiny bit more than the others. I would...

This is the cleanest room I've stayed in sincebeing in India for one month. Bright airy room with window and ac, TV with HBO and other english language channels. Real hot water. I got a free pick up at the train station. Friendly staff with no hassle or pressure to book a camel safari. Restaurant view is great, food was just ok. The only thing I didn't like was there is a window connecting the bathroom of my room and the bathroom of the next room. Though you cant see into the next room but you can hear everything. So sometimes you get to hear the gory details of your neighbors delhi belly and vice versa, so no good if you are toilet shy!

I've been traveling around India for the past 5 months and this is the best budget hotel that I've stayed in. I traveled with 3 other people, and we each paid around 250 rupees for one night. The hotel is centrally located and has clean sheets, towels and rooms. The roof top has a great view of the fort and the food is pretty good (only a bit pricey). The owner is courteous and terrific. He will arrange for a free pick up and drop off at the train station for you. He can also arrange for a camel safari. He doesn't push it on you, and gives you the option to go elsewhere. His safari is on the expensive side (around 2000 rupees), but well worth it. You go into the dessert where there are no other tourists. One night, two days is the perfect amount. The camel men are fun and help you along. Great stay!!

To say the truth, Roop Mahal was the cleanest hotel we stayed in while traveling around India. We were lucky to get the room that's in the picture above. It was clean, everything functioned well, so we were more than satisfied. The location is also very good.

On the other hand, there are several disadvantages of this hotel that are worth emphasizing. First of all, the owner is VERY annoying. He talks all the time and constantly tries to sell you some of his services. His persistence crosses the line. However, as soon as you let him know that you don't have the money for his pricey camel safari or stuff like that, he "let's you go" :)

Secondly, most of his personnel is very indifferent and negligent. We needed an extra bed and when those boys brought us the beddings, first thing they did before putting them on the mattress was throwing those clean sheets on the ground, as if it was ok... They didn't understand the problem, so we asked them to bring us new sheets and simply leave them. In general these boys look dispirited and depresses, as if they are treated by the hotel owner in a bad way.

We stayed in ths hotel for two nights before heading out on a camel safari. The room was clean and smart and on/off hot water. There is a rooftop restaurant with a view of the fort where you can eat/drink or use the free wifi. We only ate breakfast there but which was good.

Really enjoyed the camel safari (organised through the hotel) apparently you can get cheaper ones but we heard this worth it. The stand out points were that the beds they set up on the dunes were really comfortable and you are off the ground, the food was excellent and the guides were great, can't do enough for you.

After the safari we stayed in a cheaper room which didn't have windows and was quite noisy, but only 300Rs.

We would stay here again!

This hostel is great with a friendly owner who is very helpful. It's extremely clean with a hot shower which was great for us after such a long train journey. The camel safari was great fun with lovely camel guides who is always there to help. We made friends with our guides. One of the young lads appreciated learning new english words and spellings. If you can please help them by giving some equipment such as head torches as it helps them see what they are doing when cooking food in the dark. It was beautiful in the sand dunes watching sunset and sunrise and falling asleep under the stars and the brightest moon ever. The whole experience was great all round. Please remember to bring sweets or pens for the kids.

Do not listen to negative reviews as It's not true!

We went to this hotel specifically for a desert safari as we had read good reviews on the web, although more expensive it was as quoted, very quiet and didn't see another camel safari as you would on a cheaper trip. The guides were great and we had an amazing night under the stars Rooms were well decorated and clean to a European standard! All in all I think the hotel is good value. Has wifi and laundry and will pick you up. Very hospitable people.

Would definitely come back to this hotel.
