If you are in Rajasthan and you not planning to visit this place, then you are going to miss a major tourist spot of Rajasthan. This fort is a unique fort which has maintained its thousand year old theme, it takes almost a full day to walk through the Fort and it would take more time if you are willing to discover it in depth. For the first day I would recommend to hire a Tour Guide and for rest of the day/ days you can discover on your own.
Also there are audio-guides available for the fort tour and actually they are pretty good if you want to discover the fort without any time pressure (Self paced).

The best time to visit this place is November to Mid-March and if you are planning to fly from Delhi make sure you keep Foggy weather in consideration (It gets really foggy in Delhi in December and January) which could cause potentially delays of flights, same for trains. The nearest airport is in Jodhpur city (Check Mehrangarh fort)

Some luxury bus services could be the best option because they are not bothered much by the fog, in Rajasthan province all major highways are in perfect shape and condition, Jaisalmer is connected by roads with:
Ajmer 513 km
Delhi 897 km
Jaipur 638 km
Jodhpur 290 km
Mt. Abu 572 km, via Jodhpur and 440 km via Barmer
Udaipur 563 km

Heads-up: In Summers, it gets very very hot and some deadly summer sand storms make life tough.

Most beautiful fort i have visited so far. Truly an architectural marvel. Brilliant construction. You must hire a guide who can explain the history and the minute details of the fort.

We had seen enough forts in the past so it was average. The temple inside the fort has impressive sculpture work.
