I first visited Mandir Palace a few years ago -it is beautiful.. the colourful manager Mr Singh is a delight and each time I have visited with friends he goes out of his way to make the hotel a warm and nurturing experience whilst never compromising its royal heritage - you can have both. He is passionate about guests enjoying their stay, being comfortable and attended to and the staff do not hang around for tips! With its rich heritage you feel part of the history but with modern comforts...good hot water, comfortable beds and each room tastefully decorated and sometimes a little eccentric...which is the result of a rich creative history that is India..
We arrived after 9pm - well beyond his 5pm knock off time and departed at 6am - Bleary eyed on both ocassions and there was Mr Singh with a warm, caring and cheeky smile to greet us and see us off on our journey - a lovely memory to depart Jaisalmere with...thankyou - we will never forget our experiences in this delightful Indian institution - a royal gift to the paying public..

Room Tip: I would suggest staying upstairs rather than the old stable rooms facing the entrance which are a bit small and can sometimes be noisy with people arriving and departing. The old stable rooms not facing the entrance are fine..

I was lucky enough to stay in this wonderful palace for three nights. I had an exquisite room, beautifully appointed and fitted out. I was staying there for an art study tour, and we were able to paint in the gardens and there was so much inspiration to guide our painting. It was very romantic, and close to shops and markets of Jasisalmer. Also in good distance from the fort, which provides an abundance of sights to see, and places for adventure. The Mandir Palace also offered beautiful views of the fort as well. Staff were very friendly and approachable. Virendra the manager ensured our comfort and needs were attended to at all times.

The heritage palace is a photographers delight. Structures, intricate designs, facades are beautiful. Once you enter, the interiors are cold, a bit dreary and lifeless. The property is definately not a ITC/Sheraton standard. The staff is good and the food is nice but the team does not smile, the days we stayed (2), the pool was not clean. The room door latch from inside was broken, all the plug / power points were broken, as a result we were unable to turn on the mosquito repellent. While the bathroom was clean, but had some creepy crawlies and the towels provided needed a bleach. The bed headboard had a huge photo of the some maharaja staring on you, a bit uncomfortable. Not Sheraton standard.

Room Tip: while booking, ask for a room with fixtures done and clean bath towels

This Palace has so much to offer for the photographer, everywhere you look are the most amazing designs and structures. The roof has a view to the fort, a great place to watch to sun go down, while enjoying a delicious dinner and a cool drink. The staff could not do enough for us, our room was a little cramped for 2 so we were moved to a huge room with a massive bathroom and sitting area, again with views of the fort. All this done with no trouble. Even though the Palace is set outside the Fort it is only a short walk if you want to go into this old historic maze of streets to stroll and check out all the wonderful craft stalls and cafes.
