“Live a real Fantasy”
Reviewed 2 May 2009

Like a dream from the past, staying at Hotel Victoria will let you live it in the present day. A friendly hotel-provided tuk-tuk driver pointed out city/fort highlights, as we wound upward through narrow vibrant alleys. The romantic charm of this hotel is evident from the moment you walk in the door ... candle-light, incense and deep red floating rose petals. Although it feels you are in a fantasy, as you ascend to your quarters, you know this is the real thing - a carefully restored section of the fort wall, with an incredible view.

Guide books and tour guides may try to discourage you from staying within the fort, but don't miss this opportunity. The preservation of original gems like this one are only possible with the support of visitors. This hotel was a family home that has been restored in compliance with fort regulations to accommodate the needs of visitors while respecting water and environmental capacities.

Pankaj, the friendly and engaging manager will assure you are welcome and cared for by him and his staff. Breakfast on the roof top is a wonderful way to greet the day, as the action of the market below is in full progress. At night, enjoy a Thali with the sun setting and evening music of the streets.

I had the honeymoon suite with balcony and loved watching the changing scene at all hours of the day and night. It was a highlight of my trip to India and I would recommend it highly. I hope to return again.

The Stay at Victoria was awesome!!

If you want to be a king, live in this live Fort. My entire family loved it. The rooms are superb, the service is personal. The balcony....what to say.... you can see entire jaisalmer.

My family stayed there and nobody was interested to go out. They said Fort is the place for all of us.

We stayed in the honeymoon "sweet" (the one with the balcony). It was an absolutely gorgeous room and we really enjoyed our stay here. The decoration was charming, the bathroom very nice and the service and friendliness of the staff were great. I would recommend stretching your budget a little bit further on this occasion and get this room. You won't regret it!

We would not call Victoria a hotel, we would call it a home! It is after all an ancestral home, that has been converted for lodging. my husband and I did a 2 week trip of Rajasthan and Victoria turned out to be the most beautiful surprise of ALL the hotels we stayed in. I don't know where to start since everything was so lovely. The location is right inside the historic fort, where no vehicles are allowed. It is so quaint. like living in someone's home. The cleanliness of the hotel is a pleasant surprise. the rooms are spotless, little small (but then all hotels in the historic fort are small) but so quaint. and the view of the entire city of jaisalmer from the rooftop is breathtaking and so romantic. but best of all, is the home made food and the service provided. We got all teas, coffees, water and soft drinks on the house! the vegetarian food was so yummy, hygienic, wholesome and cheap! i am surprised to that some travellers rate this hotel as 'expensive or small rooms'...perhaps they need to travel more in Europe, where inspite of paying through your nose, you stay in a matchbox and wont ever get even a grain of rice for free! this is a place for someone who seeks not the luxuries of a typical hotel, but wants to enjoy the soul of a place.

The Victoria is ok but I think the room we had, the "honeymoon" room 2, with the balcony overlooking the town was very overpriced.

We had decided to splash out towards the end of our 2 week trip around Rajasthan and because the Killa Balawan rooms with balconies were just too pricey for us we plumped for the Victoria.

The staff are very friendly but the room, at 65 pounds a night (including breakfast and drinks) is just far too expensive and we were expecting a lot more than we got.

The room is pretty, large, and the balcony is great for lying around listening to the desert after a special lassi ;-) But the bathroom was one of the most basic and smallest one we had in our trip around in hotels costing a fraction of the price!

The fabrics of the cushions etc were freyed and falling apart. I expect this in a budget hotel but not for 65 pounds in India.

Even the shared bathrooms in the hotel were better than ours.

The roof top "restaturant" area is no more than a couple of tables with 6 chairs, and there is no effort to make it a place you might want to spend an evening.

So basically you are paying for the balcony, and thats it.

if, as we did, you dream of staring at the stars lying on a cushion-strewn balcony in the middle of the desert then go for it (it is cheaper than the Killa!)

but I couldnt help feeling throughout that we were paying far too much for that experience.

I want to repeat that the staff were wonderful though!

We stayed three nights at the Victoria Hotel and were glad to leave! I know other people have given good reviews on this hotel, but that just wasn't our experience. The first room we had was quite small, although sufficient and the shower tiny. That room was 2050Rs, but in my opinion was probably worth about 1000rs less than that. They asked us to move to another room which we did, and that room was larger and the bathroom was OK, although the sink in the bathroom drained directly on to the floor in front of the toilet and in to a drain near the toilet which wasn't nice. That room (room 5) is 3050, but no way would that be value for money. About 1500 might be more like it compared to everywhere else we stayed. The air con works well and is not too noisy. The beds were reasonably clean and comfortable. Breakfast was really nice - banana and syrup pancakes, fresh orange juice and coffee. It was served on the rooftop terrace which was nice. Service was very slow, but we weren't in a hurry, so that wasn't a problem for us. Although cold drinks are included in the price, you have to ask for every drink and as service is so slow and they don't tell you what is available, it's all a bit awkward and they do things like we asked for water and they brought us (after the usual delay) one for the two of us. There were drinks in the fridge in the room, but no opener. We ended up just buying our own drinks. The worst aspect was the attitude of the manager there. He just wasn't nice. We didn't book our desert trip through him as it was 250 more than others for the same thing and he was really grumpy with us and wouldn't speak to us. Then we asked him to book our bus ticket for us and he added 50% to the cost as his commission which we wouldn't have minded other than that he didn't book us on the bus we'd asked for and instead of the row of nice comfortable, clean looking buses we had the clanking banging plainly FILTHY one with no air con that took over 6 hours for a three and a half hour journey, was overcrowded, stopped every four minutes and eventually ended at a petrol station on the outskirts of the city we were going to. The time the bus left was an hour earlier than we had planned to go and what we'd asked for, which just wanted convenient. We suspect he booked us on that one as it's the cheapest so he could keep more of the money we paid him. The location of the hotel is good. It's in the fort so close to things, although I think probably staying outside the fort is just as convenient as there are plenty of restaurants and shops outside the fort and you can easily see everything in the fort in less than a day. The hotel arranged a rickshaw to pick us up which went smoothly, however the rickshaw when we left didn't go as smoothly as we had thought this was also included and nothing was said to the contrary and although we tipped the driver he phoned the hotel who told us we had to pay the driver which we hadn't expected and which was fairly expensive for the distance. This was probably just a misunderstanding and could have happened anywhere, but just seemed to typify the experience of staying at the hotel. Plenty of people on this site had a nice stay at this hotel, so maybe you will too. I do think it's very overpriced though even if we'd had a nice stay.

A stay at the Hotel Victoria is alone worth a visit to Jaisalmer. It is a gem of a place, located within the walls of a 12th century fort that's in the middle of the city. Breakfast is served on the roof top, looking out over the city with the desert beyond. The staff couldn't be kinder or more accommodating. We recommend this small and wonderful hotel to anyone visitng India. It is enchanting.
