I was a little apprehensive reading some of the less than positive reviews - this was to be my first hotel in India, and one I actually booked by mistake thinking it was a similarly named hotel.

However, my worries were quashed when I arrived. The location is excellent, land the building is indeed beautiful. Very atmospheric, and gives a real feeling of old Jaisalmer. The welcome was warm, and the complimentary Chai was much appreciated.

I dont know if I was upgraded to the Maharajh suite, but the room was wonderful. Now, it wasn't plush by any standard, but as Chimi (the manager) is quick to admit, this is budget accomodation Indian style.

Sp what does that mean? Well, in December it's going to be cold in the night as there is no glass window. IF there were, it would ruin the authenticity of the place. however, good blankets are provided.

There was also an issue with no hot water. The bathroom and toilet were immaculately clean however.

The hotel has a lovely rooftop terrace for breakfast and lunch, with free and reliable wi-fi. Breakfast isnt included, but it was cheap and extensive. Lunch was tasty. There is also a lovely chill out space with cushions - very chilled and a lovely place to read or hang out.

All in all it was a lovely introduction to India - for a budget hotel you couldn't really go wrong.

Although room was small it was clean and tidy and the hotel was very good. Food excellent - breakfast, snacks and dinners. Great roof terrace and although next to the Jain temples, not noisy. Short walk to the monuments. Staff very good and the camel safari they organized was excellent - dinner under the stars and the dunes we were taken to were not crowded with other tourists.

In a 500 year old haveli.

The staff was quite friendly, and did not push any camel safaris on me.

The place was oozing with character and would be an excellent place for couples. Unfortunately no rooftop restaurant to meet other travelers, but I don't blame the owners for not having one.

The room I stayed in was excellently decorated and was spacious and really had a good feel to it. The bathroom was clean and functional enough. Came with clean sheets and a towel.

The location is very good once you find it (would be difficult to find at night).

We read a lot about not staying "in the fort" but decided that Suraj sounded like our kind of place. We have no regrets overall it was a positive part of our holiday. Having read some of the comments on trip advisor we are a little surprised we certainly did not experience many of the negatives mentioned. We found Chimmy and his family friendly, interesting and helpful. We took a short desert trip arranged by Chimmy and felt it was good value plus well organised. We ate in a restuarant along the street suggested by Chimmy (probably in the family) and were very happy with the food/service.

Fair to say the hotel is an ancient haveli this was part of the attraction for us. Whilst it would not be hard to find fault with it at the same time for anyone trying to get a true experience of India this must be much closer to reality than a modernised hotel.

It is not a luxury hotel !! but it is in our opinion a great experience. Dont miss the opportunity to stay in this historical building but do go with your eyes open and be prepared for basic standards.

It was a pretty unusual place for me to stay. The Hotel was a old Haveli buiding and was very peacefull inside the house. The room I stayed in was one with view over to Jain Temples along with gorgeous arches and colourfull curtains. The balcony for our room was really nice with cushions. As the room was with couple of windows and a big balcony so it made our room natural bright and fresh . The bathroms was big and clean but not very luxurious. Also we were happy to use free internet as many time we asked for it. As well as free chai was offered to us few times and was really gave us a freindly fell. It was a unique experience in itself to stay in 500 years old haveli and room too. So as far as compromise of a bit with luxury of modern hotel but real charm of tradition of Jaisalmer made us happy from this lovely small hotel. Advices on visits to towns and free city map also helped us out in visiting all monuments of town in time.
I was a real pleasure to stay here, and is a highly recomanded hotels in Jaisalmer.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The land of Jaisalmer reminds you of the past days of maharajas and their havelis with fine architecture and eye catching facades. We are pleased to announce that our haveli is among one of them. Named after the founder of this haveli, Shree Suraj Karan G, our haveli is 500 years old converted into hotel being the 18th generation of same family who made this building. We can proudly say that we are among one of the hotels who started the trend of haveli style and homestay hotels. Running our haveli as a homestay from last 25 years we have received a lot of love and complements regarding our hotel. The main reason behind is that we haven't changed the main structure and antique theme of our rooms. Staying on ground floor we have converted upper floor rooms into hotel rooms with a bit of modern facilities so that the guests can get all the comfort enjoying the history of haveli. ... more   less
