Found Hotel Suraj by lucky coincidence and what a wonderful surprise..the architecture is like an organic part of the fort and must be ancient..but perfectly maintained...the rooms have each a unique character and most of them have a view...my small room had a little balcony with a cosy rock hewn couch and thick matrass to chill out and enjoy ...the roof top lounge is amazing for its views and better than average food for a good price, there is free internet access in the reception room and wifi in the rooms...staff is friendly and welcoming..highly recommended for quality and price...be careful as hotels with similar names are nearby...

I had a great experience here - I arrived just after dawn, and Raj was kind enough to let me into my room, several hours in advance of standard check-in time, for a much-needed nap. The room was clean and inviting, and the whole hostel is well-maintained and secure. The rooftop lounge is absolutely stunning; the food is great, priced fairly, and available late; the staff is gracious and welcoming. Highly recommended.

I found Hotel Suraj by mistake and so glad I did. It is easy to confuse names, as there are also Surja and Surya hotels nearby. The building is almost 600 years old so don't expect the perfectly designed rooms. This magnificent piece of architecture wasn't built for guests that expect silver service in a 5 star resort, but it could do with a woman's touch with the dusting. My room, as with the rest of the hotel is clean, just a little dusty but this is India no less!! If you are bothered by dust, simply ask Chimi or management to clean it and they will - easy. Better that, than writing derogatory comments on trip advisor, denying people this once in a life time experience. I did a quick wipe over myself.
I am in constant awe of my surroundings here due to it's history. My bed is VERY comfortable, and each room has well thought of little touches to make it homely. Everything here is authentic, hence heavy doors with locks and chains that look 600 years old! I think that's the 'prison' effect that one person so negatively commented on.
There is no running hot water, however management is more than happy to cart buckets of hot water up for you - no trouble at all. I opted for mid afternoon showers. My bathroom is spotless, with lots of hooks, towel rack, ample lighting, mirror etc.
I have a table and chairs, which is handy for my computer work. Wifi works well in this room, but not in all.The restaurant on the roof top serves average food with prices in accordance to almost every other hotel here. Beer is a good price and cold.
The family owners are extremely obliging and try their best to please, so do yourself a favour and give this place a go - I'm sure you won't be sorry. Having just read another negative comment, I can't imagine Chimmy giving bad service and not being concerned about his guests needs - he is a genuinely lovely person.

Room Tip: Look at them all - they are all so unique and different. Bounce around on the beds and find one that...

Suraj hotel ist absolutely great and maybe the best place in jaisalmer!
rooms are cheap, beautiful and stuff ist super friendly! ask for lala he will tell you interesting things about india, his family and jaisalmer!
Instead of going to the havelis in jaisalmer - better stay in a 500 years old haveli. suraj also has expensive rooms, but they look more like a museum - incredible experience!
dont follow just your guidebook, go to suraj!

Awful. Booked ahead and confirmed day before. Arrived late evening to find no room prepared and Chimmy (owner's son) rushed around putting us in spare room with mattress on concrete floor. Toilet filthy. No hot water. Blankets smelly and dusty. Chimmy does not care as there are always people looking for a room at short notice and he had obviously given away the room we had booked. Offerred us another room for next night but at twice the cost. We went elsewhere the following day.

Room Tip: If arrive early in Jaisalmer go around all the hotels and ask to see the available rooms

Firstly, don't get confused like we did and think you are emailing hotel Surja which is higher in the rankings on here!
Once we realised our mistake we decided we'd go with hotel Suraj as we'd had prompt and friendly email replies from Chimi the owner.
He picked us up from the bus drop off point as promised, even after the bus had dropped us off at the wrong point so all started well.

We had confirmed with him we would like the larger room for 2 nights by email, so when we arrived and were shown that room which was very big, traditional and with window seats and a nice view, shabby chic lets say but definitely more shabby than chic, we were pleased. But then he told us that it was only available for one night and we'd have to move the second night to a much smaller room with very little light and rather dreary. The last thing you want when backpacking and constantly travelling is to move rooms after one night so we decided we would go for the cheaper smaller room for 2 nights or more as we planned to stay in Jaisalmer around 5 nights..
We checked in and went off for a walk and on our return, noticed that actually the bathroom in our small room was filthy, scum in the sink and the toilet was disgusting. On getting into bed my partner pulled the blanket - well actually it was more like a rug, heavy and itchy, up over himself and dust and dirt wafted out. And to say the bed was hard is an understatement. It was the worst nights sleep I've had after 1 month in India.
We checked out the next morning and realised that there was much more on offer and fortunately moved to the best hotel of the trip so far. Desert Boys.
To be fair to Chimi he was fine about us moving on and had told us about his camel safari but didn't go for the hard sell but he shouldn't have let us think the larger room was available before we arrived and the comfort and cleanliness of that particular room needs some real attention. It could be a really very beautiful hotel but seems to lack attention to detail.

Spectacular building in the fort, very close to the Jain temples. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are amazing, and great value for money. In fact, ours was more like a suite with a bedroom, lounge, hallway, and shower/toilet room. The building is made from local stone, with beautiful intricate carvings. There is an associated restaurant across the road for meals, with free wi-fi. Also, tours can be arranged from here.

Room Tip: Take a look at all the free rooms before choosing the one you want. Some look out over the fort wall...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The land of Jaisalmer reminds you of the past days of maharajas and their havelis with fine architecture and eye catching facades. We are pleased to announce that our haveli is among one of them. Named after the founder of this haveli, Shree Suraj Karan G, our haveli is 500 years old converted into hotel being the 18th generation of same family who made this building. We can proudly say that we are among one of the hotels who started the trend of haveli style and homestay hotels. Running our haveli as a homestay from last 25 years we have received a lot of love and complements regarding our hotel. The main reason behind is that we haven't changed the main structure and antique theme of our rooms. Staying on ground floor we have converted upper floor rooms into hotel rooms with a bit of modern facilities so that the guests can get all the comfort enjoying the history of haveli. ... more   less
