The hotel is a little bit out of the way in terms of the main tourist sites, but it is only a short rickshaw ride to the clock tower (maybe 10/15 minutes). The hotel itself is a fairly nondescript business hotel, but the rooms were spacious and well equipped, and the room and bathroom were clean, although a little tired. There is a bar in the hotel (Geoffreys) which is acceptable for a drink or two in the evening, and it does serve food although we didn't eat there. Breakfast was included in the room rate and there was a good choice of Indian and continental items in the buffet. The staff working at breakfast time were excellent, and really friendly.
A disappointing part of the stay came when booking transport through the hotel's front desk.
We asked for a taxi or rickshaw up to the Umaid Bhawan Palace. The receptionist asked where we were going after that, and we said the clock tower, but that we'd make our own arrangements from the palace. She said this was impossible, as there was no way to get a rickshaw or taxi from the palace, and that we had to have a driver for half a day at a cost of 1300 rupees. Stupidly we took this at face value, and booked the driver. Of course when we got to the palace there were rickshaws and taxis everywhere, as there were at all the sites, which would have been cheaper.
The next day we needed a driver to take us to Udaipur, and wanted to stop at Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh on the way. This is a well established route for travellers so shouldn't be a problem. The hotel quoted 6500 rupees. We had done our research and knew this was way over the going rate of around 3500/4000 but for the sake of convenience we were willing to pay. We were extremely annoyed that, an hour into the journey, the driver announced that we couldn't stop at the two sites because they weren't on the way, and if we wanted to stop at them it would be an extra 1500rupees. It's hard to know who is the dishonest one in this instance, the hotel or the driver, but it left a sour taste. I would suggest if you stay here, don't book any travel through the hotel, and if you have to, make sure you get every detail in writing.
