“Yellow walls, Green window shades & a Blue door...surreal!”
Reviewed 27 January 2009

Upon arriving at Jodhpur’s train station, a pack of 10 auto rick-shaw drivers fought amongst themselves for our fare following us on foot every step of our way to the Govind Hotel, 200 metres down the road.

After waiting for our room to be vacated & cleaned we were mystified as to where we had actually set foot in. Our room was painted a bright canary yellow with green window shades, blue door & framed paintings of flowers. The room had a humungous air-cooled fan that was almost as large as the queen bed, hot water, chair, low coffee table & high ceilings which is a blessing in the desert town’s stifling afternoon heat. The bed sheets weren’t just ur dodgy 1970’s style cheap fabric but real patterned bed sheets with matching pillows that weren’t tacky or dirty. I couldn’t believe it, we paid $900 rupees for 3 people & didn’t get a dirty drab garbage-heap of a room.

It was the first place in india that we had been to that didn’t have dodgy management, shoddy rooms or overbearing staff with outstretched hands looking for a tip. Unfortunately there was no internet, not even the slow dial-up that many places have.

The rooftop restaurant is ur normal backpacker-style eatery. There is nothing spectacular about it nor the food, it serves ur normal café menu like most places with Indian & western choices. The restaurant is actually a gazebo on the flat roof & a few plastic tables & chairs with a decent view of the fort in the distance. A plus is that they serve their drinks cold. A minus is that there is only 1 gazebo that shelters patrons from the desert sun, it seems not many people venture up there for lunch.

I would recommend this hotel for people looking for a unusual place to stay on a budget. Its amazing what a room with a bit of colour can do, more so than a museum in a desert fort.

The Govind was a great place to stay! They were supposed to pick us up from the train station but we arrived arrived a little early and decided to walk -- which was very easy to do because the Govind is only about a 5 minute walk from the station. The service was excellent, the rooftop restaurant was great, and the room was big, clean, had a nice hot shower, and satellite tv. My only caveat is the location. Besides the train station pretty much everything else requires an auto-rickshaw ride. Not a big deal though, because are easy to get and quite cheap -- 30 rupees to the clock tower, and 40 rupees to the On the Rocks restaurant. The friendly staff hooked us up with bus tickets and gave lots of great travel advice. Great place, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the location. Don't let that stop you from staying here thought -- we really enjoyed the Govind!

Jaggi, his son, and his staff were an absolute delight from the moment we set foot here. They sent someone to pick us up at the train station, only steps away. They made the often difficult job of travel in India a breeze. Always ready to answer questions (even those not about traveling), they were courteous and kind like a family hosting in their home. The hotel is clean and the restaurant is lovely with great views of the palace and fort.

This is a charming guest house very close to the station, and a short walk from the clock tower and market.
As others have said, the real pleasure of this hotel was the staff, they were extraordinarily kind and thoughtful - Jaggi the owner is a sort of father figure to his guests - and as I was traveling alone it felt great to feel completely safe and to receive sensible, helpful advice. He advised me on booking my train ticket, and booked a trip to the desert for me. His son and daughter-in-law were lovely too and I so enjoyed chatting with them.
This was the best place I stayed in in India - my room was the wonderfully named Golden Hut on the roof – clean and comfortable.
The cafe with a view of the fort was excellent too.

Very nice hotel to stay in Jodhpur, with a very helpful owner. Very correct rooftop restaurant. Situation is fine too. Only thing is the room I was in was quite noisy, for the traffic outside.
