Ambiance, service, food quality taste and presentation very good. Prices are too high considering this is supposed to be the LP's casual dining restaurant.

We "accidentally" ate at Jharokha after finding ourselves too hungry to wait for a boat off of the Lake Palace Hotel and back to the mainland. So we stumbled, mid-afternoon, into Jharokha for a small bite. It's everything you'd expect-- totally gorgeous, impeccable service, but extremely expensive. Our club sandwich was comparable to prices back in New York or Los Angeles. But it's beautiful indeed-- I'd recommend it for a special night out.

Jharokha is one of two restaurants in the Taj Lake Palace, located in the center of Lake Pichola. Usually you have to be staying at the hotel in order to eat here, but our agent had arranged for it, apparently they have connections or know who to bribe. To reach the restaurant, you take a small boat for about 3 or 4 minutes out to the Palace.

Everyone was very polite and friendly, from the lady at the dock to the boat driver (who pointed out attractions to us along the way in very broken English), to the staff at the hotel who met us. We were given the option of either restaurant, but the other one was only Indian and we were getting a bit Indian-Fooded-Out after three weeks, so we decided to try their Continental cuisine restaurant, Jharokha.

The food was excellent from the starters to the desserts, something we hadn't experienced in India to this point (for Western food). This is also the only restaurant in our trip that served beef, so we were salivating at that thought after weeks of lamb and chicken and veggies. The tenderloin was cooked to perfection, the accompaniments were superb, the lamb chops were delicious, and the poached shrimp were very nice. The creme brulees and chocolate desserts were scrumptious as well.

The ambience was classy with great views of the City Palace, all lit up. It was unfortunate they didn't keep the windows clean though. No outdoor seating here, which was too bad, would have been a great place for it. Service was sketchy, but polite. Prices were very high as you'd expect from Taj, at about $38.00 for lamb chops and $15.00 for some buffalo mozzarella and tomato for a starter, but at least they delivered. Indian menu was pretty standard, at about double the prices you'd expect at a nice restaurant in town ($12.00 a dish maybe).

Lovely evening from start to finish.

We were a table of four, and though we weren't staying at the Lake Palace they were very accommodating about letting us have a meal there. The ambience is amazing and the whole restaurant has a classy and elegant aura about it. When we arrived, we got a full tour of the hotel and then we chose a restaurant. Jharokha has amazing food, I ate every bite and they made simple foods (like mashed potatoes) a delicacy. The marble arches added so much to the experience. The next time I travel to Udaipur, I will definitely stay at the Lake Palace hotel and eat at Jharokha as often as I can.
