“Stunning Property in one of the world's most stunning cities”
Reviewed 3 June 2011

Everything about Udaipur is unforgettable, and staying at the Leela simply elevates the experience to pure heaven. The drive to the city (from Jaipur) is magical, the city itself is transformative, the ride to the hotel by boat is once-in-a-lifetime.... The property is immaculately maintained and the only issue is how terribly hard it is to leave. The staff are gentle and friendly. The swimming pool makes you feel like a Hollywood star! The spa takes you to Cloud 9.... a simply perfect experience from beginning to end...

I must admit i spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to stay at the Taj Lake Palace or the Kempinski for our recent visit. we decided on the Kempinski for two reasons, (1) we were concerned about comments last year that the lake was dry during the hot season, and (2) a few comments about the huge a elegant rooms at the Kempinski, and wondering whether we might feel stuck in the middle of the lake at the Taj hotel.

We were delighted with the visit to the Kempinski! from the boat transfer to the hotel, to the elegant flowers and music welcome, and the huge two level room, it was a great start. four staff members were in attendance at check-in at the room, one of whom gave foot baths and massages. our personal butler was introduced, and she was in unobtrusive attendance at all times during our visit. it seemed that every time we left the room, 2-4 staff members would almost rush in to be sure any used towels were immediately replaced and anything else cleaned up. all this was done with gracious hospitality, as was the attention given throughout the property at all times.

the rooms are simply over the top lavish and luxurious. stylish elegance, lots of marble and stone, everything first class. it is a large property, and the exit into the city is a bit of a walk in the hot weather, but they furnish golf carts to take you over there. the hotel also has their own tuk-tuks available at a reasonable cost to shuttle you around town.

a visit to the Mahajara's Palace on the hill is a must, very interesting and still well furnished. one surprise to us was the natural beauty of the city itself situated right on the large lake. it was confirmed to us that last year, due to a drought, the lake was completely dry, and local people started temporary vegetable gardens in it! thankfully, the rains returned last season, and the lake was full and beautiful. certainly visiting here with a dry lake would take a great deal out of it. i would rate Udaipur as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in India to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and scenery, and i suppose that is why several top luxury hotels exist there.

about the food, i have read a recent review accusing the hotel of unsanitary food conditions. obviously i am not in a position to know what may have occurred. what i can say is that we ate breakfast and lunch both days at the Kempinski, and to me the food seemed delicious, freshly prepared with style and great taste. i think you have to admit that in a very hot climate, sometimes a specific container can become contaminated, but of course it should be noticed by staff. but everything we saw indicated a professional and very clean approach to food, preparation and atmosphere. i once became very ill after eating shrimp at the world famous Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, but i didn't hold a grudge against the hotel due to the experience, and i doubt that this sort of thing happens often in a very deluxe property such as the Kempinski in Udaipur.

Conclusions: i think the Kempinski is trying very hard to become the top dog in the Udaipur luxury hotel market, with top notch competition, the best incentive in any business. unless you specifically want to experience the old lake palace atmosphere, i think anyone looking for a spectacular hotel will be happy here.

We stayed at leela's for 3 nights and we felt like we were on a second honeymoon! The rooms, view, decor, PEOPLE, left nothing to be desired. if you complain here.. Well you would be totally pretentious! This is a lovely experience. To our butlers himanchu and nirmal, you were very kind, always smiling, and made our stay verymemorable. We will never forget our visit. The Soras.

this is one of the hotels where u find everything... scenic beauty, leisure, romance, huge place, good rooms and guess what else? insects in food! shocked? so was i! i couldnt believe my eyes. and guess what management did? just a simple sorry. i also wrote a complaint but didnt receive any feedback!!!!! later on i thought its such a big blunder from hotel like leela. no one can expect such a thing from hotel like leela. i mean insect which germinates when food is stale????? (illi in hindi). i hated the thought that i already had meals from them dont know what all i ate. such unhygenic condition. dont know how they pass QC. the least they could have done was made our stay complimentary but what did they do? didnt even reply to my complaint. Even a normal three star hotel will be more hygenic than them. So u guys going to leela check out ur food. it can be expired and stale and full of insects.

We stayed for 3 nights at the Leela in March on a trip to different parts of India. It was truly a memorable experience and the place we loved the best over a two week trip. The location was perfect and the amenities and the staff were wonderful. The food and drinks were great and it was just so peaceful. A delight. Everything from the arrival to departure made you feel as if you were special. The staff could not have done more to make our stay so wonderful. The rooms and amenities were top notch and we were truly sorry to leave. We hope to return to this lovely place another time.
(The only downside for me.........was how bitten I got when we dined lakeside one evening at Sheesh Mehal . The food was excellent but the mosquitoes were dining on me, in spite of having insect repellant all over. I'd certainly eat there at night again..............it was delicious..............but I might wear long pants and long sleeves the next time and I'd advise anyone else to do the same.)
I'd highly recommend this hotel to anyone, My husband and I have stayed at first
rate hotels throughout the world and this one rates at the top. The best thing about it is the staff. Very friendly, helpful and courteous. I don't think we have experienced this level of service anywhere else we have traveled. Congrats to the staff of the Leela!

Since the small boat started to cross the Pichola Lake , I relised the place we were going to was a special place. And it is ! The arrival was fabulous . Smiling staff, with umbrella for the sun, were waiting for us. While we were entering the Hotel, sweet-smelling rose petals were falling from the ceiling. A dream ! The check-in was done in an open air area with a small water fall on a yellow and black marble floor.
We were escorted by a gentle lady to our room on the 3rd floor. The room was marvelous. Very spacious, absolutely clean and with a fantastic view of the lake. Amenities were perfect. Small cakes and chocolates ready to eat every afternoon and before going to bed. The Restaurant served, absolutely, perfect indian and western food.
The swimming pool is unforgetable, the biggest in Udaipur. The SPA center ... a paradise where everybody can spend a couple of hours of relax with professionists who take care of guests.
This happened to me at Leela Hotel in Udaipur.

Room Tip: Second and third floors of central building .

Hotel Leela at Udaipur is located just beside the lake, and looks stunningly beautiful. But considering how expensive it is, the food was not great at all. In fact, I was surprised that during our 3 night 4 day stay there, we were hardly served authentic rajasthani food. Also, the property, though very good looking, is not huge. Hence, there is nothing much to do in terms of entertainment activities. For example, they only have a swimming pool, a gymnasium, and a couple of other lawn games (croquet, bocce). Also, I thought their service staff was at times quite casual in their approach.

I give them the benefit considering its just a 2 year old property and considering how aesthetically it has been developed. However, they do have plenty of scope for improvement.

Thank you very much for your feedback.
We will ensure that we learn from your comments and improve those areas that need improvement. Our Place has been recognized for its excellence and delicious food, so, I do hope you come and experience us again, especially when Sheesh Mahal opens in September.
Our Spa, which has been internationally and nationally recognized, is also a great alternative to long hot days of leisure, where one can relax and enjoy, rejuvenate and spend quality time at the Palace.
We look forward to welcoming you again soon.
