My partner and I decided to spend 2 nights in Udaipur as part of a 12 day journey around India.

We had been advised that staying in a palace on the shore of the lakes in Udaipur was a 'must' if visiting the region.

I set about looking at the selection of palaces available (all relatively expensive considering the price of accommodation for 4-5 star hotels in India) and settled on Leela, based on the reviews given on TA.

On arrival by airport transfer (arranged by the hotel and also extremely expensive) we were taken to a jetty where we awaited a boat to take you to the hotel. Although a nice touch, this is completely unnecessary as the hotel can be accessed by a gate facing the town (where you are taken when you leave).
The experience on arrival felt conceived, over the top, rushed and unnecessary.
I understand rituals, having been to some of the best ryokans across japan, but this felt uncomfortable.

Having been very quickly cajoled to our room, we were introduced to the 'butler' of the floor (an item miss sold in the hotel rooms advertisement), where again we were made to feel rushed and uncomfortable at the speed of check in and the heir of arrogance of the staff.

Having been left in peace, the view and hotel room were actually very good and had nicely made interior furniture, however a new build hotel never really carries much robustness or heritage, which is a disappointment and one not made clear on the website.

We were tired after a flight from Mumbai and decided to eat in the restaurant at the palace.

The setting was familiar to a pizza express more than a palace, although outside there was entertainment and a better view.

The food itself was average at best poor if being fair, and the price tag was hefty as you would expect from such an establishment.

Overall, the stay was comfortable, but not nearly good enough to warrant the prices charged.

For a better experience and amazing staff, you would be better off at the Madri Haveli for 1/3rd of the price!

On our recent trip to India we couldn't get a room at either the highly-touted Taj Palace on the Lake or the Oberoi. It was sort of a blessing because the Leela Palace, which is about 5 years old, was exceptional in every way.
The setting, spectacular, with views of the City Palace, Taj Palace and Oberoi.

You arrive by small boat from a pier about 10 minutes away...giving you just enough time to marvel at your surroundings before alighting at your own exquisite destination.

The rooms are spacious, well-appointed. The staff couldn't be more gracious and helpful.

I'm running out of space but...the restaurants, the spa, the outdoor areas which are grand....we couldn't have been happier with our selection.

And an added bonus (which frankly scared us at first because we thought...can this be right?) was that the price of the room was very modest compared to the other more "glamourous" resorts. WE LOVED it and wish we had booked for longer!

We stayed 5 nights for Christmas and a special birthday. Once the floor butler (Avinash, the most excellent butler in town) heard about the birthday, no effort was spared, and we were treated well beyond our expectations. The trip across the lake is just so romantic! Room with views towards Lake Palace was spectacular. Easy walk into town. Be sure to dine al fresco in the Sheesh Mahal restaurant at dusk - just wonderful! Day spa treatment was indulgant. Grounds well kept - feels like you are walking in a movie! Huge swimmng pool and spacious environs had us feeling like royalty. Not cheap, but worth every rupee!

Its as royal as it can get, yet equipped with the best of modern facilities - almost like living in a modern day palace! Rooms are luxury redefined - we had a lake-view room and beds were set up such that you would wake up to that breathtaking view of the lake! Breakfast spread is huge and delicious with a good mix of rajasthani, continental and even south indian delicacies. Staff is superbly helpful, courteous and give you a ROYAL treatment. The property has a well equipped gym with steam and sauna facilities, and also a good trainer! Situated by the lake pichola, it gives you a great sunset view across the lake. I was there for a corporate offsite, and had decided to come back with family again...simply loved it!

Spent two nights in April 2014 in the heritage room with balcony overlooking the beautiful pichola lake . Arrived early morning and was picked by a Jetty at the docks for a serene morning ride to the hotel . Super Express check-in in the arrival corridor and the room was modern and comfortable. The breakfast tasted great but has limited space to take care when the hotel runs full ( service gets annoyingly slow ). It's impossible to sit outside in April sun without the shade over the open seating . It's not a very sprawling property but has created a character in different parts of the property . Food is great !! The hotel balconies appear to have bird menace and the spikes on the balcony edge etal looks ugly !
