“The most wonderful hotel and staff.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2010

We were booked to stay at The Leela for three nights but ended up staying for eight and would have stayed longer. A fantastic break from a month of touring and sight seeing. The hotel is exceptional but the staff make it really special. The attention to detail and surprise extra touches made it a stay to remember for all the right reasons.

You should all be really proud of what you have achieved.

The srevice is exemplary as is the food. You are advised to take a book and unwind in the quiet surroundings. Outside excursions should be limited as you would want to maximise the relaxation and and ambience that this hotel has to offer. The ESPA is strongly recommended for a massage.

My partner and I recently returned from a two-week holiday in India. The highlight of our trip was our stay at the Leela Palace Hotel in Udaipur. Wow! What an incredibly beautiful hotel and wonderful staff. My comments mirror all of the positive reviews already posted here. In fact, it’s because of the reviews on tripadvisor that we chose this hotel in the first place. I had a very tough time deciding between The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace (I had stayed at the Taj Lake Palace Hotel several years ago and although it is a historic property, I thought the hotel looked run down and I was disappointed by my stay). I can now confidently say that we made the right choice! Don't get me wrong, the Udaivilas is a fine property and if I hadn't seen the Leela first, I probably wouldn't be critical (we had lunch at Udaivilas on our last day). But after seeing the attention to detail at the Leela, it raises the bar of what you expect from other 5 star properties. Every wall and every space has beautiful artwork and furnishings, and although this is a new hotel, they have maintained a respectful balance between the rich history of Rajasthan and the modern comforts of a luxury hotel. The common spaces are very intimate and you feel as if you're staying in a real palace home. There are beautiful courtyards with gorgeous infinity water features throughout, and at night the hotel takes on a completely different feel (wonderful use of lighting and fire lamps). As one reviewer commented, it really is a jewel in Udaipur. The Leela also has the added benefit of being walking distance to the City Palace (it’s about a 20 minute walk through the old town of Udaipur, which is a great way to experience Udaipur so long as you don’t mind the local shop keepers calling out to you and asking you to look at their wares).

One of our more memorable meals in India was at the hotel’s Indian restaurant, which has a romantic outdoor setting at the edge of the lake. We had views overlooking the City Palace, the Lake Palace and Jag Mander. The night we ate there, we were treated to a lovely firework display from a wedding that was taking place at the Jag Mander in the center of the lake (the fireworks had nothing to do with the hotel, but the view from the hotel made for a great show with our dinner). It couldn’t have been more perfect.

The hotel has a beautiful bar which is a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The bartenders are very friendly and they are happy to make one of their specialty cocktails if you can't decide what to drink (ask for the champagne cocktail with fresh pomegranate.....very yummy)! In the evenings, they have local folksingers in the courtyard outside the bar, so you can take your drink out and sit in the open air courtyard while listening to live music. The hotel is cleverly designed so that most, if not all of the common spaces, overlook the infinity pools which are lit up at night (along with the lake and the City Palace in the background).

This review is already getting longer than I intended, but I can not end without a special thank you to the incredible staff. My partner and I are generally independent travelers and we tend to avoid places with an overly stuffy feel, but the staff at the Leela are so warm and friendly and there is a genuine desire at all levels to make you feel welcome. If you’re like me and you spend a lot of time researching hotels for your holiday, I can assure you that you will not be disappointed if you choose The Leela Palace for your stay in Udaipur. It is difficult to overstate the wonderful experience we had at this property. From the moment we arrived by gondola to the small parting gift they gave us when we checked out, it was truly a magical experience.

This hotel is in a fabulous location perched on the lake with views toward the Lake palace and the City. The architecture is glorious, obviously very modern, but fits beautifully into the landscape. The lake was full when we arrived there having been heavy monsoons this year. Our arrival by boat from the jetty on the shore was an evocative start to our stay. The staff greeted us with flower garlands and a band (a little over the top.) We had adjoining rooms for my wife and I and our 2 children who are 5 and 8. The rooms are opulent and beautifully designed with balconies and amazing views over the lake and the city. Comfort was excellent and I have a feeling if we'd asked them to bring us a different bed they would have done. The spa was not yet open and only one of the restaurants was open as the other is being completed. Normally this might have spoiled our stay, but the food was excellent and service exemplary. The butler service available to all rooms is very attentive. We ordered a DVD one night and it arrived with popcorn and soft drinks at no charge. There are sweets and pastries being delivered constantly. I was ill one day as a result of food eaten in the Lake Palace and the staff could not do enough. The pool is large and when you sit down on the loungers they practically bring a picnic to you. The pool heating was not yet operational and I thought the pool itself couls have been cleaned a little better than it was, but a very minor fault. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone considering a trip to Udaipur. CM November 2009

We were at the Leela for our 1st anniversary… we wanted a nice getaway from delhi and what a getaway it was!

The hotel is absolutely impeccable in everything from the staff and service to the food, looks and luxury.

All points to their staff – they are very well-trained and efficient. We got personalized and prompt service at all ends. The hotel was packed to capacity due to a marriage group staying and I was silently dreading it anticipating chaos. But we were not affected by it at all, rather we didn’t even realize how busy they were.

Aniket – assistant f&b manager personally ensured that our dining experiences were enjoyable and different. The food was excellent – we had Indian, south Indian, Italian and a Rajasthani thali (which Aniket had arranged for us) – and all of it was perfect. Also, they used to decorate our table every night for dinner, it made us feel very special.

Our room had awesome views of lake pichola, city palace, taj lake palace and jagmandir. And everything would look so beautiful lit up at night! The room itself was spacious and luxurious.

The exterior of the hotel is very nice – lots of outdoor sitting every where, nice features and interesting décor. They have an inner courtyard which is lit up by lamps every evening and they have a very good rajasthani troupe singing there, it makes an enjoyable evening.

The staff at the concierge desk was very helpful and prompt to make our sightseeing & travel arrangements and anything else we would request for.

I honestly can’t say enough for how much we enjoyed at the Leela!!
