“Stay here if Nitin is still in charge!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 December 2013

This is a unique hotel that benefits from the excellence of its manager, Nitin.
He took us on a walk around the local village that proved to be one of the highlights of our trip. A fascinating glimpse of rural India that will stay with me for a long, long time.

There were rumours that he was due to be replaced so do check before you go. Nitin makes it a very special place.

Don't expect luxury, its a very old heritage building. But we will never forget our time here. We loved Ravla Khempur.

My stay at the Ravla Khempur was the highlight of a more than fabulous trip to India. The hotel, built in the 1600's was a photographers delight. The accommodation was simple and elegant. Although basic, the warmth of hospitality shown by the hotel manager, Nitin, and his staff, made me feel like I had come home. Special highlights were the walks through the small township, and being made so welcome by the locals, horse riding and being invited to sing with the women in the evening to celebrate an upcoming wedding....being awakened in the mornings to the sounds of worship from the ancient temple across the road. I highly recommend a stay at the Ravla Khempur.

My wife and I had booked 2 nights here as one of the highlights of our trip to India, we read all of the great reviews posted here and were looking forwards to a couple of days of relaxation. When we arrived however we found no English speaking staff, and had to wake up someone to try and help us. A young man then made a call to his boss, and showed us to a room. The boss spoke to us on the young man's mobile phone, and said he would be here in 10 minutes. We were then just left alone. We had a look around the room and found it to be dirty, with geckos running around, and gecko droppings on the beds and pillows. We decided to take a look around the hotel and grounds, as at this point we were still excited to be here, and we hoped the manager would arrive soon. The rest of the hotel was also very dirty, the courtyards and garden were overgrown with weeds, and had litter scattered around, there was also a constant stream of what appeared to be sewage water running from the building, down the entrance path, and forming a large muddy puddle in the entrance archway. The interior, and particularly our room, had a strong smell of damp, the toilet water kept running constantly (maybe the cause of the stinky puddle outside? ) the toilet seat was also falling off.

The manager failed to appear, and all of the people (staff?) were sleeping or sitting/laying around. We decided it was time to give up and leave. We informed the young man who had shown us to our room that we were not staying, and he made some frantic calls to his boss, each time handing us the phone, the boss assured us he was 5 then 1 minutes away, but failed to show after another 20 minutes or so.
We wasted our money on this hotel, with a non refundable full payment online, and 2 expensive taxi rides.

The only good thing from this is a picture of my wife next to the Best exotic marigold hotel sign.

We did not expect luxury, we were aware of the building being old and worn, that was part of the charm, but we did expect some degree of cleanliness, and for there to be at least one member of staff expecting booked guests to arrive.

With so many staff sitting around, it would not be difficult or expensive to clean the place, pull up some weeds, and carry out basic maintenance.

All in all this was a hugely disappointing part of our trip.

Although we stayed at the Ravla Khempur back in February, I hadn't posted a review before as I understood that Nitin, the lessee, would be replaced in about March. As he was a major part in our enjoyment of the hotel, I thought I wouldn't do a review. However, I see from recent reviews that he's still there so here's my review.

Our experience was like many of the other reviewers. We visited to see the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but were then captivated by the reality. After a blunder by Air India, we had to get to Khempur with a car and driver provided by them in Jodhpur. He had great difficulty finding Khempur but I think Udaipur drivers would know it or a transfer can be arranged by the hotel.

The outside of the hotel has seen better days and the rooms are fairly basic but full of character. The dancing horse was fascinating and the village tour was great, especially as my wife used to be a teacher. Dinner on the verandah was very enjoyable and the small falcon sitting on a branch right next to us at breakfast was also great.

Room Tip: They've all got lots of character.

Rawla Khempur is located at Mawli, about 50 km from Udaipur. Mawli is a village but its school has a 12th grade! The rustic atmosphere forms a great backdrop to the heritage hotel. it has an old world charm with its wide open courtyard, beautifully done up rooms with coloured glass windows and old fashioned artifacts. There are books to read and one can relax with a cold drink in the evenings and watch the moon shine down at night. Peacocks, parrots, pigeons and other birds, horses, cows and pigs, farms full of maize at this time, dirt roads and colourfully dressed women adorn the place. There is a quiet charm to the place and the manager, Nitin, who manages the hotel, is very helpful and courteous. We took trips in the car he arranged for us to travel to Nathdwara, Chittorgarh, Ranakpur and also to Mt. Abu. We did not visit Kumbalgarh but plan to do so next time we visit the place. it is just the right place for a writer like me to visit and stay at, for I am always looking for places that are quiet, charming and off the beaten track, and Rawla Khempur fits the bill.

Room Tip: Our room looked out to the temple and the driveway and was very spacious and comfortable.

What an amazing experience this hotel turned out to be. It really is rural about an hour away from Udaipur, I wish we could have stayed longer. We made the very most of our stay thanks to Nithin the amiable hotel manager who is a great ambassador for the hotel, it's environment and the village of Khempur. The village is largely self sufficient with little mechanisation and a walk around led by Nithin was a real introduction to rural indian life. We soon gathered an entourage of happy faced children, keen to practise their English, and were invited in to some homes to meet families and in particular the Marwarni horses. Nithin and his staff couldn't have been more helpful, we had a delicious supper on the roof, by candlelight before settling down to watch the film 'the Most Exotic Marigold Hotel'. A visit through the village the next morning to the school was a joy, do go - and buy some paper and pens for the children at the little village shop on the way.
I think the hotel works because of the efforts of Nithin, his ideas and beliefs introducing guests to the village and encouraging the villagers to embrace the hotel guests, makes the visit truly unique. He has a gentle style and an easy way, that makes you feel you've made a friend; I really hope the venture is successful, it deserves to be.

After returning from India, there were few hotels I wanted to write about, but the Ravla khempur made our trip in India and I want everyone else to be able to have the same experience we did. If you want to get out of the city and have some peace and quiet this is the place to go. Ravla khempur is in a loverly village about an hour out side Udaipur, very accessible by taxi. The village itself is so warm and welcoming, everybody wants to say hello and just simply get to know you. Ravella keeper (marigold hotel) is one of the most fantastic places I have ever stayed. The best part about the hotel is it is un spoilt. It still has very its rustic charm I really hope that never changes. Whilst in India for 6 weeks we stayed in some heritage hotels that have been done up, and whilst they were beautiful they did not have the natural charm of this one. Nitin the owner has done such an amazing job with the place, it really would not be the same hotel with out him and his staff. There is nothing they won't do or at least try there hardest to do to make your stay as unforgettable as ours. If it is just relaxing in the swinging chair, sitting on the balcony watching the most incredible sun set, wondering around the village, having fun with the horses or enjoying the most beautifully cooked dinner, Nitin and his team really do make your stay one you will never forget. If we ever have a trip back to India it will be the first place we visit.

Ravla Khempur exudes historical ambience and is graced with breathtaking surroundings. The lofty terraces, open courtyards, sprawling gardens, domes, arches and canopied balconies transport one back in time. Khempur village developed over the centuries to one side of the Ravla. It comprises a small, random and attractive cluster of typical rural dwellings and shops, and shaded squares where the villagers discuss the affairs of the world or share the local gossip.
